CB200 '73 tracker project - DONE :D

Re: CB200 '73 tracker project

hey all!

this time not an update but a cry for help.

I have been driving my bike for a week now, fluctuating in how well it worked. We needed to adjust some things here and there, but it worked. but today I was driving home and it took me a lot of effort to keep the engine running while waiting for the red light. As a said, this week it worked.

Yesterday, we tried to make it run better, since we added the new podfilters, by adding the rough side of a kitchen sponge to the pods. (those which come in all kinds of colours, with a soft side and a thinner rough green side). Ofcourse, i made a 'fence' to prevent it ending up in my engine.
Worked like a charm, not holding back anymore at high RPM, so it seemed perfect. Very happy girl at that time.

Another thing we adjusted yesterday was the headlight highbeam function. Since the light has no 'off', and the lamp that i'm currently using uses to much power, the battery was not loading at all. As a result, we have to start it by running and it's a lot easier with the light off. Unplugged the high-beam cable so we could turn the light off. Everything worked fine and we drove home.

Now, this morning we wanted to ride to the workshop and it wasn't running well at all. The end of the day i drove home and after about 200 meters, engine stopped. So i turned it on again, drove a few miles and had a very hard time keeping the engine running, as soon as i let go of the gas, the engine almost fails, and when i had to stop for a red light, it even turned off.

After bert showed up, he got it running, maybe something had cooled down a bit? But when he drove my bike again this evening, about an hour later, same thing happened, and each time after a shorter period. Hard to keep the engine running, terrible (no) idle, and finally a quick death.

Checked the pods, everything fine and it didn't make any difference whether we'd use them with the extra foam or not.
Battery is new, but when removing the battery, it works only with all the lights on and using the horn. Otherwise it just dies. Very weird?????

So, my battery is new, my regulator/rectifier is new, new coil is used, anyone any idea what i'm doing wrong? Must be something in the electric system but we must be missing something. :( A mystery to me cause everthing seemed to be ok, and suddenly everything seems to fail on the bike right now :'(

We suspect the regulator must be ok since the headlight doesn't pop anymore, and the rectifier part must be ok as well since the horn is working too...

And no, i did not forget to get some fuel or open the fuel tap this time ;)
Thanks for reading my long story, hope one of you guys can give me some directions!

Goodnight for now

Jene

Hmm,

Few things to try out..

Do you have a good solid ground? Make sure its got clean contact to the frame

I dont know what the charging system consists of on the CB200s but it seems it could be not getting quite enough power at idle. You rev it up, and the charging system kicks in, making it run better. Maybe test your battery's voltage at idle, and revved up, see if it drops significantly with slow rpms.

Another thing, are you running stock jets in your carbs? If so, you may want to rejet them up a step or two. Pod filters open the air flow right up, so you generally need to match that extra bit of air, with some more fuel. IE: Larger jets.

Re: CB200 '73 tracker project

All checked. Strange thing is the bike seems to run better with as much shit on as possible (lights and horn) so that means there is enough juice, because lights and horn and bike itself work without battery.

With lights off and battery detached, bike stalls after 100 meters.
With lights on and battery detached, bike stalls after 500 meters.
With lights on and battery attached, bike stalls after 50 meters
With lights off and battery attached it runs like shit and stalls immediatly. 20 meters or so.

Gear selection does not make a difference, as does throttle response. Bike seems to just quit.
At first, we could keep her running at 5000 rpm, but now its like you turn the key after 400 meters.

When lights and horn on that is.

Re: CB200 '73 tracker project

Try night in the daytime with No lights, No charging - disconnect the alternator and run it on the battery. If it's OK after say 1Km, that tells us something. If it still fails after 10 or 100m it's not the charge circuit, it's something else.

If it's a charge circuit error, it sounds like it's overcharging and the extra load pulls the voltage down, but it doesn't explain why it stalls. Is the voltage getting so high that it causes something in the regulator to cut out completely, and if so, why does it not continue to run with the battery?

Battery detached lasts a little longer before it "blows". Battery attached and it goes to overload very quickly sounds like a regulator malfunction of some sort but why does it die? If the regulator went open circuit the battery should power the ignition and lights OK.

Is it a capacitor failure that is just getting worse and the tests are coincidental and not related?

When it stalls, what is battery voltage and does it still make a spark?

Re: CB200 '73 tracker project

Turned out the oil-seal behind the advancer and points broke. Points got oily and refused to work, due to overpressure on the oilseal caused by the new oilfeed. Drilled an extra hole in the camhousing between the seal and engine, so the oil could easily fall back into the engine instead of ripping the seal and soaking the points again. New seal, new points and everything's fine :) Points turned out to be completely done anyway. Don't know how we missed this during build-up :')

Working at the seat at this moment, this weekend, there's is a big swapmeet nearby. Very excited, hoping to find some mirrors, jets for my carbs to make it run better and some turn signals. Can't wait! ;D

Love the fast responses here if anyone needs help, even with the smallest problems. Thanks! :)

Re: CB200 '73 tracker project

Hi Sollero,

No news so far, bike is doing great. Jene still has to upholster the seat and then it's up for BOTM ;)
She's working on the NX now, but i'll tell her she has to do the seat!

Re: CB200 '73 tracker project

Hey all!
Sorry to keep you waiting for so long! It took a lot of trial and error to find out i'm not the best person to sew things myself. (yet)
Ruined a lot of nice leather jackets in the process...Then we found an old chair, and the fabric was perfect for my seat just the way it was already. It had two layers with foam in between.

So, i drilled holes in random places and attached the fabric with pop rivets. It was just as easy as it sounds actually.

A nut attached to the drill, to prevent drilling trough the foam and fabric.

As you can see i have a big bulky battery for now, the other one died unfortunately. At least everything is working again :)

At first, i considered this seat as temporary untill i would have many to have it upholstered professionally. But i'm happy with the result and i'm keeping it this way.

That means...pampampaammmmm....
MY BIKE IS DONE NOW! (and working awesome as well) :D ;D

Here are pics of how it looks now:

The coloured wall is the workshop, so if you ever want to visit us, you know what to look for :)
Thanks for helping me out troughout the whole building process!. I'll shoot some nice pics one of these days, just waiting for the sun to come out a little :p

Welded a little brace onto the hoop at the inside, furtermore, the 2 rear bolts holding the seat in place go through the fender as well. I'll ask Jene to post a pic of it. Sure she has it, she made a ton of 'em haha

Very cool Bons - best luck this month. Great idea on the fenders!

Thanks all!

And Tron, the only picture i have is really blurry, but you can see how it works :)

Outstanding work Bons!
Especially like the black rims - makes the whole bike look really "solid".
Great work on the fenders also.
Have fun riding.

Re: CB200 '73 tracker project

Hi. The bike looks great. Well done!

One small detail, I would suggest you replace the bolts holding on the shocks with high grade bolts with a shank long enough to pass through the width of the frame and shock eye (the shank is the neck portion of the bolt that is not threaded).

The bolt I am talking about can be seen below:
