Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Weird Pipes) FRESH PICS UP!

Bit of time since my last update. Long story short, Didn't do very well in my classes and am now re applying to colleges. Realized I was extremely unhappy as an engineering student, and that what I should have been doing all along is studying Mechanical Engineering Technologies. I am now going for my B.S. and will try to be a technologist. All these years I've been telling myself I just "want to be a happy mechanic," and I suppose I was right all along. I just wish I had realized it sooner, instead of after wasting 40 grand on a years worth of classes that I failed. Anyway, I'm paying for it (literally and metaphorically) now. I'm very happy about my decision, also I am far more confident going into this program then I was ever going into engineering. My hands were never meant to be clean.

Anyway, enough of my own personal life. It's been stressful enough as it is, and the last thing I want to do is hear about how much I fucked up from all of you guy's when I'm already hearing it from everyone else. I miss my bike like you wouldn't believe, and I'm dying to get back to her side. Hopefully Matt will be free sometime this week and I'll be able to go get the final welding done on the headers. I'll update as it comes. Cheers everyone.

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Weird Pipes) FRESH PICS UP!

Hey. I spent the best part of a decade as a college lecturer, pretty much being forced to get students to go on to university. The majority of whom did not have the academic intelligence to make it a worthwhile debt to be saddled with. Not saying they weren't bright as buttons, but intelligence comes in different forms ......... academic, physical, practical, social, emotional etc. Most would have been better off getting a trade/appenticeship under their belt, in a shorter period of time, ending up with little or no fees to pay back and getting a good wage at the end of it. Now the UK is awash with sub standard graduates working for far less than the average trades person, and lots of them are paying back their loans as call centre jockeys being managed by people without a qualification to their name. Go figure.
And don't beat your self up if you went down the wrong avenue ...... the important fact is that you realised it. As with everything in life, we don't learn bugger all when things go right, the true lessons come when it all goes tits up. Also bear in mind that most people will have at least 2 career changes during their working life, and work is valueless if done without passion.

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Weird Pipes) FRESH PICS UP!

been really busy lately with college applications and helping my father at work. Spent a few minutes drawing up the flanges (finally) on sketchup.

these are really rough, and dimensions are subject to change besides for the 1.25" Inside Diameter at the side that connects to the header, and the outside diameter. Excuse the dimensions being in feet, not that it really makes a difference. obviously i dont have 1.5 foot exhaust pipes. haha!

the step in size is to help with flow reversion, to make it have a little more torque (theoretically). how much it helps or hurts is really up for discussion though.

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Weird Pipes) FRESH PICS UP!

Sketchup is OK and all, but that could easily be accomplished with a pencil and note pad. In the real world usually is.

Let me know when your up to this:

Im honestly not sure how to take you GR... Not sure at all... ???

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Weird Pipes) FRESH PICS UP!

hahaha! I use autodesk inventor, but I have to boot into windows for it. Also, the drawing will be sent to a guy using a manual lathe, so nothing fancy is necessary, and he probably wouldn't know what to do with a CAM file.

truly though, that is some really impressive work you are doing. I'm nowhere near that level; I can model vehicles in autodesk but they are crude and take me forever.

I did, however, model a catapult when I was 16 for my physics class, which I later built. I got an A on the assignment, and more or less built the best catapult my teacher had ever seen (in his class). It was a fun project, built from plywood, bearing mounted and used a large piece of soap stone for the weight. Most students used straws and rubber bands to launch the clay ball we used as a projectile... mine would hit the target perfectly every time and would launch it with such velocity that it would shatter the ball every time on impact. haha, good fun.

sorry for the tangent!

need some stainless stock to finish this off. anyone?

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Weird Pipes) Need Metal!

heres the deal. Who can come up with the most simple way to use 1.25" OD exhaust tubing with the original exhaust flanges, while adapting the tubing so that its larger at the port in order to seal to the gasket without issue?

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Weird Pipes) Need Metal!

1/2" wide, 1/8"thick strip wrapped around pipe and welded, or, as I said, weld a washer to pipe just remember to slip a spacer on first

Ahhh. that is a really nice solution PJ. thanks buddy, Well put it into effect. Also gives me some ideas as far as the flanges....

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Weird Pipes) It's the little things...

had a free hour or two finally. Sanded my headlight bucket down, mixed up an ounce of resin, and matted the two areas that had big notches missing. Once dry they will be sanded down and the entire bucket gone over with some filler to smooth it out, ready for primer. Was a lot hotter in my basement than I was expecting, so my resin kicked just as I finished up. will have to see if it needs more glass after it hardens.

I'll take some pics later tonight; my camera is not charged and I have to go upstate to have dinner with the family. ::)

PJ-

Excellent idea! I've already got some options worked out for materials for Dave. Thanks for sharing!
