CB350 Built by a teen (Weld Now, Grind Later)

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Weird Pipes) FRESH PICS UP!

This thread has pictures? Well fuck me!

That looks great by the way.

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Weird Pipes) FRESH PICS UP!

Buffy CAN do work. He did enough yesterday. He was actually a big help.

Today's plan:
1. Exchange the Argon bottle and pic up some SS filler.
2. I will set up the purging paraphenalia and weld up the collector while Mr. Buffy put the finishing touches on the locking collars.
3. Once the locking collars are welded on to the pipes, we'll make final adjustments to the pipes and collector position and then he gets to sit around while I purge and weld the pipes.

I had forgotten how darn finicky SS is, but I'm remembering faster than I though I would.

Woohoo!

Nice work Gents, she'll be a bike soon! Pipes are friggin sexy. Must feel great to be coming to the fun part. Riding the crap outta her.

Cheers,

Maritime

How much clearance do you have between pipes and case? (is that a spacer in first pic?)
you don't want them heating oil through radiation.

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Weird Pipes) FRESH PICS UP!

Looking good David, and it's nice to see some progress. that exhaust looks very promissing

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Weird Pipes) FRESH PICS UP!

BuffyMoto...hahaha. Well hell Dave, I didn't really think I'd ever see this thing roll! Congrats man, you're close! That first start-up is going to be so sweet.

Today we accomplished 1 and part of two. So . . . not so great. LOL! opening up the holes for the locking collars was not something we could do with a hand held drill that was too fast. We burnt up two hole saws. Dave is going to finish drilling the collars with his drill press at his house.

The purge setup, though simple, worked fantastically. There is nary a trace of sugaring on the backside of the welds! Yahoooo!

We won't be able to get back at this for a couple of weeks. I NEED to fix my car and get it inspected before classes start next Tuesday, so this weekend is shot, and the weekend after I will be traveling.

Dave will do the riding. I don't have the coordination to actually operate one of these things.

Crazypj- Yes, the blocks of wood are used as spacers. There is about 1/4" of clearance between the pipes and the frame, and at least 3/4" planned clearance to the case from the collector. Dave says that is fine. There is mostly enough room to take out the drain bolt, too. (Again, according to Dave.)

Do any of you gents know the thickness that the copper seals are supposed to be crushed to in order to seal properly? I'd like to know so we can incorporate that thickness into the design of the locking collar to make the exhaust gas transition as smooth as possible and provide a correct and trouble free seal.

worst case scenario ill put a cool air scoop that directs airflow between the case and the pipes, but as it is it should get plenty enough to not allow any serious radiation, except in parking lot NYC traffic, which is unavoidable.

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Weird Pipes) FRESH PICS UP!

3/4" is fine, I've run 1/2" without problems.
Any closer and some sort of insulator would be a good idea (been thinking of ceramic coating but it's expensive)

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Weird Pipes) FRESH PICS UP!

I'm still waiting for him to upload more pics. LOL! He's heading back to campus today, so I can't bother him too badly. I have a fantastic idea for the exhaust locking collar, since he gave up trying to finish our ho-made units. It should be beyond spiffy!

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Weird Pipes) FRESH PICS UP!

Here are a couple crappy cell phone pics that will have to tide people over until Buffynuts gets off his butt and uploads more pics!

This is the first iteration of what will eventually be a pretty cool locking collar idea for the headers, and it will allow the stock collar system to be used, as Dave was keen on the look:

I am getting back into the swing of things with stainless, though, the collector proved to be pretty darn ugly, at least by my standards. It will hold and it won't leak, so mission accomplished, though. I will be working heavily to improve that, for sure!

Things to come:
Awesome ideas for some fixturing to make welding tubes and pipes a whole lot easier.
Further ideas for making the locking collar.
Finishing the header. (Duh.)

One of my best ideas ever... play-doh port finder!

A quick (and blurry, sorry guys) look at the final pipe.

Been so busy here at school lately. Really have to put my education first. Otherwise my dreams of one day having my own motorcycle company will be just that much farther away from reality.

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Weird Pipes) FRESH PICS UP!

Matt kinda looks like Fat Mike from NOFX.

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Weird Pipes) FRESH PICS UP!

My name is Fat Mike. I'm obsessed with big lesbians. I've been a punk rocker for most of my life. I sing kinda flat I'm not really that fat But that's how I hit them with a hook or a slice.

Looking good, Buffy.
