CB350 G build (electronic ignition installed, and it actually works, pics added)

Re: CB350 G build (electronic ignition installed)

Finally an update:

I pulled the clip ons off and decided on the MX bars as the clip ons bother my back and I messed up my back pretty good. I also got the electronic ignition on tonight. I used the parts from the DYNA III from that I had and an old points plate I had lying around. I used some PVC pipe I had lying around for the rotor and a rear earth magnet. It all worked perfect and the bike started on the first not even full kick. I didn't take it for a ride as it was about 1:30 AM when I finished it. But as soon as I get up I'm going to take her for a ride. I also cut up the sprocket cover and mounted a heat shield. Let me know what y'all think.

Here are the pics:

Sorry for how big the pics are.

Re: CB350 G build (electronic ignition installed)

Well did more work to the bike tonight. I trimmed the new pick up sensors to make them more adjustable. I fought with getting the left cylinder firing and after hours of tuning it and static timing the bike I finally figured out that the left channel in the "brain" box was not working properly so I switched it out with the other one I have and it fired on both cylinders. I couldn't really run it to much as it was after midnight when I finally got it started ;D . Needless to say my neighbors were not to happy with it running so late. I'll mess with it more in the morning when it isn't so late.

Well went out this morning and kicked it over and she started right up. She runs supper strong. I then took the bike for a test ride around the block. The same ride I was doing and the points were failing on by the time I got back home and she pulled hard all the way up to red line. I have some small tuning to do and figure out a speedo for her. I took the Acewell off and put the original tach back on. I think I might run a bicycle speedo or something like that.

If you get the wireless type of bike speedo try to mount as far away from the coil as possible. It'll cut out interference on the signal.

Thanks. I was thinking about getting the wireless one too. If I do I'm going to mount the sensor on the rear wheel just to clean up the rear end.

I did take her for a ride today and put about 50 miles or so on it. She ran great until the main fuse blew and I thought it was the battery. I then walked 5 miles to an auto part store and picked up a new battery. Once I got back to the bike it still wouldn't do anything. So thankfully a guy stopped to ask me about the bike and let me use his cell phone, mine was dead, to call my brother. I threw the bike on the charger and went to dinner. Once I got home it still wouldn't do anything so I checked the main fuse and sure enough it was blown. I replaced it and bam she fired right up.

So here's my question what size fuse should I run for my main fuse. Now mind you everything is running through it. It had a 15 in it before that blew.

Just realised, your up the road from me (Altamonte)
15 amp fuse should be plenty, although the Blue Coils may have higher amp draw?
Is that a DR350 or an RMZ silencer you originally had fitted?
still got it?
want to trade it for work in a few weeks? (electrical, mechanical, tach/speedo plugs and/or starter block off)
I'm completely out of action at present, had surgery on left arm Wednesday morning, (Ulnar nerve relocation)
BTW, nice sprocket cover, I've seen one similar to that ;D

Crazypj - I pm'd you not to long ago but I missed the meet up at Kappy's. It was running fine or what I thought was fine and then just died on me. I think the coils might draw a little more than the stock. I needed a new battery any ways. The old one was like 3 years old or so.

I'm not sure what the silencer was off of but we could definitely make a deal for tach/speedo plug and/or starter block off. Just PM me and we'll work it out. That sucks about your arm though.

Thanks! I actually did the sprocket cover all by hand as I would start working on it at like 9-10pm till oh about midnight for a couple nights. It was a pain but I love the look. I know I've sen a couple and love them ;D

I thought you had but wasn't sure,
I did my sprocket cover by hand, drilled holes, taped up hacksaw blade, Dremel, files
generatorandsprocketcovers.jpg

I'll PM you and see what we can work out

Yep that was me.

Hahaha I did the same exact thing when I did my cover. My wife thought I was crazy but she really liked it when I was done.

Just pm me. I'm sure we'll be able to work something out.

Didn't get much done on the bike today. I did check it though and the battery is only showing 10V after charging overnight. Also when I turn the power on to the bike the neutral light comes on then dims and back and forth till it just stops. Not really sure what might be wrong with it. Might go mess with it tomorrow before work.

If any one has any ideas please let me know.

Sounds like battery has died.
It should show around 13.5~14 v directly off the charger.
You didn't have flashers on ?
I have a switch fitted into ground side of headlight so only coils and LED's are 'on' with ignition, switch headlight on after its running

PJ the old battery was about 3.5-4 years old, and you know what the FL heat does to batteries. I put a brand new battery in and charged it overnight on a known good charger and it was only at 10v. I'm gonna take the battery back tomorrow and switch it out.
Nope not running any flashers. Just head light and led tail/brake light. I have them on a separate switch so I can turn everything off individually. I have a main switch, headlight/tail light switch, and ignition switch. So I can start and run it with no headlight.
I honestly think I got a bad battery or at least I'm hoping that's all it is.

Still not sure why the fuse blew yesterday though??

Hey Neubs, just wanted to chime in that that sproket cover is really cool - I havent seen that before - good luck tracking down the electrical issue those are the worst, great build!

Mark - Thanks for the complements. I actually saw it on here a couple times and decided it looked cool so I did it. If i would have to do it again I wouldn't lol. It was just a pain and I did it all by hand like PJ said he did his.

But I think I figured out my battery problem. I took the battery back to Auto Zone today and sure enough it was bad. The guy said he thinks one of the cells were bad in it so it wouldn't charge all the way. I got a new battery and am going to charge it tomorrow and try to get it back in by Sunday.

I got to work on the bike a little today. I put the new battery in after charging it and it started and ran great on the first kick. I took her for a short ride, 10 miles or so and she ran great. So I decided to ride home on the bike. About halfway home I went to shift and nothing, there was no toe peg there. I was about 10 miles from the house and had no other way of getting the bike home so I had to hook my boot under the lever to up shift and push down on it to down shift. It worked ok but scared the hell out of me when I went to shift and couldn't find the peg. So Now I have to figure out what I'm gonna do for new toe pegs. I think I'm gonna check ebay and see what I can come up with.

Yep, bits fall off old bikes. ;D
I lost right bar end mirror on way to work (coming off I-4 onto OBT, it's on the video I made, then it isn't :-[ )
Normally I could knock up new one pretty quick, this surgery really sucks.
Still wanna learn some machining? ;)

Yeah they do. I was going along shifting fine then went to up shift and there was nothing there. My wife was driving behind me and said I looked down and around almost in a panic. Then she said she wished she had a video camera with her so she could record me shifting. She said she was laughing the whole way home (from seminola and 17-92 to Country Club and Lake Mary Blvd)
Which bike do you take on I-4? That is a daring ride from Altamonte area.
I'd love to learn a little machine work. Just let me know when you are feeling better. I have the silencer sitting aside for you. I'm gonna do a quick make-shift peg just so I can ride her around. She is so fun. I hate seeing her sit in the car port when I know it's just something as stupid as a toe peg that's keeping me from riding.

The 378cc Dyno motor, all Cafed out. 8)
I got fed up building the 'nice' one and realised I wouldn't be able to get it finished so threw everything together with ready built motor. It's done a few hundred miles now with no problems (except mirror ;D )
Got 2 min vid in oscar winning vids, - sugarloaf and in build thread (not everyone looks at it)
Running real good, 'normal' I-4 afternoon cruising (until I hit Church Street, elevated section to 408)
Video is 28+mins and I still don't have a clue how to edit out the boring bits to make it 'acceptable' length

Re: CB350 G build (electronic ignition installed, and it actually works, pics ad

This is the first time I've read through your thread. I'm impressed. Especially with the ignition you created. Very similar to something I'm trying, but I'm using parts from Pertronix kits for VW engines. Good work!

I finally got to work on the bike a little. Been super busy with this new job. I put a make shift toe peg on that I made out of a bolt and nuts I had lying around. It works ok so far but will continue to look for something else to use.

two-smoker- thanks! I've been working hard on it for a while. The ignition wasn't to hard once I got the basic understanding down. The Ignition works great. I went out and kicked the bike over after letting it sit for over a week and she fired right up and ran great. I'm so glad I finally decided to go to the electronic ignition.
