Blue/white is the headlight main wire. It feeds the dimmer switch. Hook it up to a black in the harness. Some models, this would be a black/yellow wire.
Thank ya, sir. All lights function and the starter turns! One step closer.

Once I get the tank sorted (rust, new petcock and crossover placement) I'll be able to poot up and down the street a little.

I have drill this weekend, so I'm going to see if our metal shop can help me do the tank properly. Hooray for free welding!

I would get so spoiled in our shop. The equipment we have is gratuitous. This is the tip of the iceberg.

Here are the young chaps that are helping me out.

And here is part one of the tank: crossover relocation...

Also, got some parts in from Slingshot. Brake lines seem to be really high quality and he emailed me back promptly and with good info. Highly recommend this company.

ALSO: Purchased 15w-40 Rotella. Hope that doesn't ruffle any feathers. I know many of you recommend the 5w-40, and I may switch to that later on, but I've read A LOT about it and I've decided this is the oil I'll run first.

Re: CB360 box build - nearing completion

15w/40 is good oil, the 5w/40 is more of a performance enhancer ;)

Re: CB360 box build - nearing completion

Trying to start it up, getting occasional backfires, gas smells, etc, but no idle.

I have a spark, I have compression, carbs came from PJ and I expect they're good. I checked plug gap and leaned out the mixture screw to 1.75 turns out...

Help!

Re: CB360 box build - nearing completion

Check points cam isn't 180 degrees out, turn motor over with 14mm socket and ratchet and use bulb or just listen/look for points flash/crack.
Your not cranking throttle as you try starting?
Normally it should be completely closed but for a first start if you don't have idle speed set you may have to just 'take the slack' out of cable.
Put half your hand on switch housing, your less likely to accidentally twist the grip
Try full throttle with choke off if you smell gas (but get ready to shut down quick ;) )

I think it's likely I have it 180 out as that's something I've read a lot of people do with similar results and it's one of those stupid little things...

It also looks like I occasionally get a poof of atomized mixture shoot out of my K&Ns, I believe that's symptomatic of that as well?
Also, the kick start occasionally feels like I'm trying to compress fuel, that's when I stopped trying.

Question. I set the left hand points to open at LF at the point where the crank wants to continue rotating. I assume this is correct. Timing being set 180 off would have me setting points at the LF mark where it is easy to keep the crank in that position. So perhaps it isn't the timing?

Re: CB360 box build - nearing completion

if you removed the advancer from the cam, make sure its installed correctly. Tit on cam fits in hole on advancer.

If you disassembled advancer...springs, weights and lobe off of advancer. Not only is it possible, it is easy you re-installed lobe 180 degrees out...I did that a week ago. ::) Took me a couple minutes of staring, to figure that one out.

It's possible I have the advancer installed correctly. I will check that. I just went through tuneup again... If I remove advancer and reinstall, all I have to do is reset points again, correct?

Re: CB360 box build - nearing completion

Yep, you'll have to re-set points and timing. You can't fit advancer 180 out on cam, it's points cam on the advancer that may be wrong.

Re: CB360 box build - nearing completion

Immensely frustrated. Going to buy new plugs, maybe b7es.
Valves are dead on, timing is dead on (built a test bulb), getting a spark (not sure what a strong spark is supposed to look like, but I can see it in daylight, and they are properly gapped)

It just backfires and pops and reeks of gasoline.
I have pilot screws two turns out.
I'm providing fuel from a test tank. (it has venting)

Re: CB360 box build - nearing completion

Could it be that I'm using a 6 amp hour battery? Even if it's fully charged?

Re: CB360 box build - nearing completion

Are you certain you have compression? because i thought i had compression but that was only from the closed carbs when my intake valves were bent/leaking. is gasoline shooting out of the carbs? is that what is causing the gasoline smell

CB360 box build - nearing completion

Gasoline is occasionally shooting out of the carbs, yes.
Did a compression test this morning.
