CB360 - Penelope

After a solid 5 months with out working on her, I was able to get back in the shop.

I want to be able to steer at low speeds, so the lack of steering was an issue...here are the corrective measures:

don't mind the jagged pieces inside the tank...

found some 2.5" x .049 - 304 laying around the shop :)

first side welded up

I clamped this side a little tighter and was able to use very little filler rod, which made for some smaller, prettier welds.

There is a lot more room for steering now!

I hope to have the tank fully sealed by welding soon and then seal it with some POR-15. After that, the valves can go in, I have to make a wiring harness, then she will run...hopefully!!

so awesome. just read your whole thread...and after wiping the drool from my desk, decided i'd give you a bit of praise. what you've done is inspiring and one day, i hope to have the means and expertise to be able to complete half the things you've done to Penelope. Keep it up and please keep sharing!

Cheers,

H

Reading your build makes me super jealous! Just seeing the Solidworks screen shots gets me going. I also use it everyday but I'm far from making my bike as a CAD model! Nice job! Also great machining skills, thats rare for an engineer. Keep up the good work.

Very nice! Glad to see some practical engineering into a build. I was also on a Formula SAE team for a year at my university, but my job was trying to alter the computer from a zx6r to run nicely with a turbo since I was a CpE. Never got to see the turbo in the car but if anyone has the chance to go into an engineering degree and be a part of a team like that I recommend it.

Keep up the excellent work, I can't wait for you to finish.

Thats awesome! We got rid of the turbo because it was keeping us from competing...too small of a budget and too small of a team to put resources in to developing that.

Alright guys, I am opening up the table for some design input. I know that it might be difficult to do so with out seeing the whole bike, but here are a few shots of Penny.

At my work, I have access to multiple 5-axis CNCs...some large enough to cut full size SUVs out of foam/ clay!

My hope is to get an idea for a seat, roughly shape one out of foam, 3D scan it in to the computer and then tweak and optimize the surfaces to make sure everything is symmetric and what not. Then cut the mold, lay the carbon, and presto, out pops a seat...or 10! I know there are some of you out there with photoshop skillz, so lets see what you can come up with for Penny's rear end.

Thanks in advance guys! I am excited to see what you all can come up with!

Looks like you ran that bike into a wall.. its super short. Interested to see how it all turns out. Sorry, no photoshop skills... just MS Paint :p

i am intrested in a seat if you pop them out... love the front wheel on that bike always loved the inverted with spokes!

Yeah, I think its a combination of the big front wheel, and it sitting high up. I'm hoping to bring it down (vertically) all together and that should help "stretch" it out a little

You dont even know what it is going to look like, but you want one!?!! Do I take that as a compliment??

I'll be interested to see what geometry you end up with. The triples have much less offset which shortens wheelbase and increases trail. Not sure what your rear ride height will be with the monoshock. Close to stock?

That makes sense. The rear swingarm is the same length as stock...I probably should have made it a little longer to compensate the forks.

Right now the frame rail sits about 30 inches off the ground...not sure how that compares to stock. That is also with the super stiff R1 spring. With the proper spring and a little sag, along with sliding the fork tubes through the tress, I should be able to lower it by at least another inch, maybe two.

Ultimately I'd like to get an 18" rim for the front and lace it to the hub. All in an effort to drop the nose and give the bike an overall forward slant.

I can make anyting look good as long as i have a platform. if you are glassing them or carbon i can work with that, plus i like to keep a random suply of seats on hand in the shop... never knwo what you will need or what a customer will like
