Nice darn work there Red. The sproket cover turned out great too.

Thanks man! I did some more on the tank I need to put up here, I have just been quite busy working on it and not documenting it as much :/

Fine work on this. I love the calculated approach. Lots of stuff on this site can be pretty hack, but there's also some really fine work. This is a great example. Nice modeling by the way.

Haha, thanks, but don't be fooled, it is still quite a hack job ;)
I figured I went to school for 4 years, I may as well put that degree to good use and make something for myself.

I've been slowly chugging away, nothing major to share yet other than this small fun piece. Last night, a tiny piece of steel flew off while I was grinding, made it past my safety glasses and in to my eyeball. I didn't think too much of it at the time, but then it started kind of hurting this morning. I tried rinsing it out, but it was stuck. Made a few phone calls and had an appointment with an eye doctor a few hours later. By the time the doctor pulled it out (with tweezers!!) the piece had rusted. This was all in under 20 hours!

ALWAYS WEAR PROTECTION, is what I'm getting at here

You can see the little ring of rust at about 2 o'clock in my eyeball below.

awesome I just leave em in my eye and they fall out on their own after a couple weeks ;)
its kind of annoying but better than a dr bill

I machined all the little bits for the swingarm and I am just about ready to weld it all up:

DSC02428.jpg

Aluminum stopper -> machined sleeve pressed in to hardened precision ground needle bearing race -> needle bearing -> acetal bushing/plug/seal

DSC02430.jpg

Found this odd size tubing in the shop, bored it out to .0005 under the OD of the needle bearing...nice and smooth :)

DSC02429.jpg

Used a 1.25" two flute end mill to hack a hole through the side of the swingarms, then I had to bore it out a tiny bit more with a dremel to get it to fit right, but it fits nicely in there.

Put all these parts together and you get......MOTORCYCLE!!!

General placement of shock, still need to get tires before mounting this little guy up:

DSC02423.jpg

I'm slightly concerned about steering...I don't have too much rotation out of the forks before they hit the tank, I may need to add a recess in the tank for these...what do you guys think? Is this enough rotation to ride? I've never ridden street bikes so I'm not too sure:

Sourced an old aluminum 2.15 wheel from a dirt bike. I got the whole rear wheel for $40, but I only needed the rim. It is in really nice shape, should polish up nicely:

Thanks for looking! Hope you like it, I sure do!

You are gonna need more steering than that for low speed maneuvering. You might look into denting the tank in like a Manx.

This is a fantastic build. Very well done!

Thanks Chris! I have kind of looked up to the work that you have done and your 360 project was a bit of an inspiration to mine, so thanks!

The lines on this bike are going to be amazing ;D I love the Benelli tank with the mono shock!

Thank you sir! I am pretty happy with them too, now if I could just finish it!

Great job so far!!! Looks amazing...
Ahhhhh to have a lathe....

Thanks! Owning a lathe would be awesome, having access to a machine shop that has lathes that I could never own, is probably better :)

I haven't updated in a while, but I have slowing been working on the gas tank and polishing lots of things. But I made a nice little piece today. Glamor shots:

Sanded rear hub/ starter plug

Casting ribs between removed...sanded to 1500 grit

I need to get some bigger washers or make a retaining bar for the inside

Hope you guys like it!

That craftsmanship on this build is just incredible. Makes me feel like I should throw my build out and start over. The motor looks amazing.

Thanks guys, I have put quite a bit of time in to this little guy.

The hub is "machined"... I centered it up in our hugest lathe to get rid of the cast ribs, and then I kind of reshaped the other ribs. Using the lathe for sanding was amazing! I just had to hold my hand there while it did all the work for me. I am debating on whether I should polish the hub, or leave it as is. The front hub is a machined piece of aluminum, so this might match...but the surface finish on it right now is soooo smooth that it would polish to a mirror!

DON'T DO THAT!

This is really looking great. I love the bluish silver paint on the bottom end. Is it from a spray can?

Yes, it is a Titanium Blue high temp engine paint. The paint on the head is a matte black high temp engine paint too.

I have been busy but slowly working...haha! Here are some progress pictures.

Swingarm pivot welded in:

DSC02872.jpg

Impossible idea for last bit of the tank:

DSC02846.jpg

What it actually ended up being:

DSC02852.jpg

DSC02854.jpg

DSC02855.jpg

And the bird poop welds to hold it all together. I was at home and didn't want to wait to TIG it, so this is what I get, most of it will be ground smooth:

DSC02857.jpg

Half of a Dewalt 28V battery pack in my gas tank :) that still needs to be all soldered together and finalized

DSC02861.jpg

I put the engine in to see if this whole mono shock is actually going to fit, and....

It fits! But just barely!

I went to put the pistons in and found out the CB wrist pins are too long for the GS850 pistons, so I ordered some of the GS wrist pins. I lapped the valves in, and they all pass the acetone test! I am going to install the valves and put the rockerbox back together then hopefully get the engine buttoned up when the new wrist pins show up. Hope you guys like it!
