cb450 rearsets done on the cheap!

Actually, i do have one concern, that being the strength of a standard 3/8" standard bolt. Will it hold up to bearing the weight of the rider? Comments, anyone?

Well, personally, I didn't use a standard grade 2 bolt. I used a hardened grade 8 bolt. The car I built from scratch used 5/16" grade a bolts for the suspension pickups, and I generated over 1.25Gs at the track. So I think a grade 8 can hold a 200lbs man :)

if I recall I believe I used grade 5 bolts, (3 lines on the hex head) they're medium tempered carbon steel and can take a lot more stress than I can ever give them (i'm about 175lb)...so far I have not seen any issues and I do stand on them often when hitting railroad tracks or other bumps in the road.

Thanks, Chris. Do you have pics of your set up? This has to be one of the best DIY projects I've seen. I was just going to purchase a ready made set from fastfromthepast but am now glad I didn't. I misunderstood Herm about the bolt. I thought it said a standard bolt but the post actually said a "standard hex" bolt.

I have the same bike. If you get around to duplicating them let me know, I'd definitely be in the market for some. $300 bucks is out of my price range right now.....

I'm going for it! I found a pair of deeply knurled old school pegs on egay for $12 with shipping. I found my NIB German sealed bearings from a deck I was going to build (but didn't), and I found a nice sheet of 1/4" 6061 for $20. I don't think I'll need spacers, though as my DOHC set up is a bit different. I'm fired up. This is gonna be sick!

Sweet!!! post some pics when done!

Keep in mind to make sure the hole you drill out for the bearing is slightly smaller or if it's the same size put some locktite in there. You do not want that bearing loose or free otherwise the controls will feel like shit under your feet.

Have fun dude!

side note: I picked up my pegs the other day and bought a few extra’s in case I have it in me to turn out a few extra sets this weekend, will PM you guys who were interested then.

Herm, I've got a question if you don't mind. Where did you purchase the skate board bearings? I wanted to give your idea a try but I've hit a snag. I was at a board shop yesterday and they said that the bearings are standard size. However with the set I bought A 3/8" bolt will not go through it. It is the same bolt that I'm using for my BMX pegs. did I miss something or did I buy the wrong size bearings? Thanks for the help. Troy

I got mine from a local Fastenal store. They carry several sizes. Let me know if you can't get them where you are and I'll go pick up a set to send you.

Thanks Herm, Just spoke with fastenal and they said they could probably get them in. do you have a part number by chance?

I just searched their site and want to say the mfg # is 1604-2RS, if i google that part it looks right. The fastenal p/n is 0474442 for the size I used. I'm pretty sure that was it, If i were home I could tell you for sure, but i'm at the office.

Your the man! Correct #s. on order, will be in tomorrow. Thanks again

As I said before, the PO chopped the passenger peg bracket off of my bike so I can't make the "hermsets", which are awesome, without making additional mounting brackets.

But I'm very excited because I just bought a pair of rearsets off of an '05 R6 on ebay for $30 shipped. The shift lever is bent but I am going to try to position them so I can just swing my stock shift arm 180° and shift inverted. I am going to try and mount them to the rear engine mount / swingarm attach blob.

So my skateboard bearings won't work? I haven't tried to fit a bolt yet...

Mine came in a pack of 8 for $12 . A 3/8" bolt doesn't work in mine. Thats the size needed for the bmx pegs.

This fastenal place looks awesome and there is one right down the road from my office. You mean I've been looking at HD and lowes for these crazy metric fasteners when this place is a couple miles away!?!?!? What a dumbass. ::)

oh yeah, i get all my metric stuff, clamps, metal stock, etc there. the only issue is most of the nuts and bolts are sold in bulk, BUT, get in good with the guy who runs it and he'll sometimes break them out for ya.

biker_reject - it's going to depend on what size bore you have on the bearings dude...

Not a problem. There's a Fastenal store 3 miles from my house. It just would've been cool if I could've used these old bearings from my misspent youth! I actually planned on utilizing those unused Christian Hosoi wheels as frame sliders on my sportbike build.

My rear brake sheered basically in half at the end of last season. I was looking to just replace the stocker, but after seeing this, I'll be making these. Really great work!

stupid question: did you use a drill press for the holes, etc? or just a steady hand?

(I have the latter, not the former)
