CB550 Carb Boring Services- "Almost Free"

Hi,

My name if Rick Denoon, you can check out some of my work at www.denoonsp.com

I have been boring carbs for the CB400F for about 5 years now, and have done probably 20 sets in that time. I thought that there might be a bigger market for CB500/550 carbs because more guys seemed to be modifying them compared to the 400F.

A friend was working on a 550 project so I borrowed his carbs, built the jigs, and bored his carbs. Unfortunately he abandoned the project before we ever got to test the carbs

I posted almost a year ago on the SOHC board that I had the jigs ready to go to bore CB500/550 carbs. Since then, I have not done a single set of 500/550 carbs. In the same time I have done about 8 sets of 400F carbs. So, my thinking is that maybe people want to hear from someone who have actually tried the bored carbs.

I posted this same offer on the SOHC board, got a couple of nibbles, but nobody who actually stepped up and sent the carbs to be bored.

To that end, I am looking for a couple of people who would be willing to send me their carbs to be bored, for no charge. You pay shipping both ways (hence "almost free"). I am located in Canada, so shipping is about $25 each way.

You can review the detail of the boring at http://www.denoonsp.com/carb-boring-cb500-cb550.htm

My only stipulations are;

1. I am looking for a couple of different stages of engines, a stock one, and one that maybe has a pipe/cam so I can get a bit of a variance in the results.

2. I need the person to be timely in re-assembling the carbs and getting them installed and tested. I don't want to have to wait until next year to get some feedback.

3. I need the person to be somewhat proficient in jetting carbs. You may have to go thru a few different setups to get things right, and I need someone who is willing to put in that effort.

4. You need to be willing to post a review (good or bad) after the carbs are back and installed.

Please contact me direct at rdenoon@mts.net

Thanks

Rick Denoon

Y'all, Rick is the real deal, he did my carbs (400f) and it worked out great! I can't believe folks aren't jumping all over this offer!

Hate to be "one of those guys" but....it's hard for me to send my carbs to someone and trust they won't just keep em ;) Wish I had my cb550 still so I could help you out Rick. Next one I find I may be willing to take you up on the offer. You don't do any KZ's eh? Like 650's or 750's?

MotorbikeBruno - What,, you don't trust me with the Honda carbs, but you'll send a set of KZ carbs? Honestly, what do I want with a set of set of carb bodies that I can buy on ebay for $40. ;D

White Orbs - I've always tried to stick close to what I know. I know 400F's. So when someone asks a specific question about what jetting works with what pipe/intake/engine combination I can give an educated answer. I know less about the 500/550's which is why I was looking for someone to work with. I know even less about the SOHC 750. And, there is already someone out there boring and adding accelerator pumps to the 750 carbs.

I could be convinced into working on 750 carbs, but designing and building the jigs is a fair amount of work, so it's not something that I can just turn around in a few days.

Rick

Haha, I was a bit of a smartass (my apologies) I meant I'm one of those dudes in general that always thinks the worst. I'm working on that :p

My problem is that I have a few KZ's...but no CB carbs on the shelf. ;D

Thanks Crazypj, I had gathered lots of info in the 80's when I was a kid building 400F's. It's good to be able to share it with people.

Rick

I would be interested and meet most of your requirements but i can not guarantee how fast my motor will go together, but it is going to be a 592, ported with a cam and custom 4-4 pipes.

I'm very interested, however I'm in the beginning stages of a cafe project. It will be about three months before its back together. If that works for you then let's do it.

I've go two people who have contacted me directly that have expressed interest, but I haven't heard from them for sure that they are going to send their carbs.

If anyone is really interested, contact me directly.

CPD51 - 3 months is longer than I would like, but if these other leads don't pan out, I'll get in touch with you.

Rick

My '550' is in need of a total re-build as it's done 106,000 miles (590 conversion, cam, ported, 127mph)
Unfortunately it's also 4,500 miles away in South Wales ;D

your "project NYC" bike is one of my favorites that i have seen.
I have not run into that bike in my travels but hope to one day

A friend has a 550 with a stock motor that should be back on the road soon but its the spring before it will really be ridden
Same story with a few 750s

I've sent the info off to Kemp Archibald, a Toronto local who builds CB550's pretty much exclusively and used to race extensively. He and I travelled together to the DTT Alabama meetups over the past couple years at Barber's in October. He's always building a CB550 of one form or another including some with hot internal setups. Might be your guy to test things with.

surffly - Yup, did a ton of planning and lots of work on Project NYC for a customer. With the exception of the frame, pretty much the whole bike traveled from the USA to Canada and back,,, in boxes. He has since sold the bike (I think maybe to someone in Idaho or Montana?). I still do work for him, now on a VF500 Interceptor.

Tim - Thanks, I'll wait and see if he contacts me.

Rick

I'd love to send you my stock cb550 carbs, but I have no clue about jetting etc.. What would I need to do to make this happen, other than the shipping etc?

Thanks,

Sean

I am really looking for someone who can handle the jetting. There are lots of people out there who swear that you cannot run pod filters on a CB400F and have it run right. After people ride my CB400F with pods they can't believe how much better it runs than a stock 400F. It all comes down to getting your jetting right.

I am really looking for someone who has some experience jetting, and is willing to pull their carbs off 5 or 6 times (or whatever is required) to get the jetting right, rather than try it once and then claim that I bored their carbs and now the bike runs like sh*t.

Rick

Wish I could help, I know a lot more about jetting now than I did in 1977 when I bought my 550 ;)
It's possible to get real close with fuel jet changes, float height adjustment and needle clip (plus air screws, etc)
Mine went from around 23mpg stock to 41mpg after engine mods (and at higher cruising speed)
The emulsion tubes and air jets will probably need some modifications to really work the same as' factory', but, 'better' 8)

Rick 4004, I've send you a box of CB550 Honda carbs for boring. The first set are the early model carbs, essentially 71-76, the 2nd set are the late model units from 77/78. Looking forward to testing the units on a stock engined cafe 550 and also on a highly modified "Hot Rod 592" that I'm about to build. Should be fun!

I had Rick bore my carbs back on my 400f, my first vintage Honda. He did an awesome job! But, I did not. I was a complete noob about bikes back then (2003?) and didn't get the carbs re-assembled for a loooong time. Once I finally reassembled them, they did run like crap! But, after I learned about jetting (took many many tries), the bike ran awesome (with pods)! Sorry, I never got back to you about the jetting... It was stock motor but with a Kaz pipe. I miss that 400f exhaust! I play video of it running once awhile. Anyway, Rick is a great guy and honest.
