CX500 "Bastardwing" - 24th June - It caught fire!!

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 8 Jan - Paint is going on - 3 new vids up.

Brother, the paint looks great. That soldering rig is every bit the simple brilliance that the tacks in the cork block are. You have no idea how much time you just saved me. I'm stealing both ideas, thank you very much.

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 8 Jan - Paint is going on - 3 new vids up.

that is crazy how good that paint is coming out. very unique mate well done

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 8 Jan - Paint is going on - 3 new vids up.

Cheers guys, and thanks to the missus for the thumb tacks matey.

I'm hoping to get a coat on per night. Fingers crossed I can find some time tonight too.

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 8 Jan - Paint is going on - 3 new vids up.

Ya know. You're doin' a great job and all staffy, and that certainly is a nice gloss you've got goin' on there. But. I just don't get it? I understand the process was popularised for painting cars and large surfaces, but surely spray cans are the way to go on bike-sized projects? You seem to do an awful amount of painting, sanding, painting, sanding for not much head-way? The same results could be had with an even coat of spray. If it's the particular gloss finish you're after, couldn't you just brush the final (top) coat across a suitably prepped base? It would save soooo much time as well. I think you've even debunked the economic benefits yourself?

That's just my take on it I guess (and I do have a spray-bias ::)), but it seems like a lot of pfaffing around to get a really thin top layer of paint?

Having said that of course, I'll be sure not to miss any of your vids to see how that fairing fares ;)

cheers mate

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 8 Jan - Paint is going on - 3 new vids up.

You do have some valid points but there are benefits.
  • There's not as much atomised dust this way, so all the crap that gets caught up in a semi clean shed won't get stuck in the paint. Any dust that does get on it settles on top and sands off quickly.
  • It make s alot of sense when there is not ample enough or clean enough space to spray.
  • The long term cost should be equal to or less than the usable amount of paint in a rattle bomb (note I said useable as we all know that after a half to two-thirds is used you really start to get some messy paint coming from the can)
  • If the paint is applied correctly (like I did on the last coat) it should take only a minor brush of 800 grit between coats to knock the tops off the orange peel, unlike some rattle bombs which result in even more work.

The other thing is the sanding I did initially was to clean up the sidecovers and sort out the tank ready for paint. Both of these things needed to be done regardless of the paint application method.
The other lot of sanding I had to do was because I buggered up the first coat.

Don't get me wrong, if I had space available to create a ghetto booth which could be left like that for the duration, I'd be all over it like Kirstie Alley to a hot dog. I think this is the best method for me though and my circumstances. I'm hoping it works out though as I'm sure there'd be others on board who'd find this a less messy way of painting tins.

Besides, nothing beats kicking back with some JL hooker, Creedence or Clutch while painting and sanding right?

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 8 Jan - Paint is going on - 3 new vids up.

I don't see how it is any more work than a proper spray bomb. Justs seems as if the first round of paint replaces a layer or two of fill primer.

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 8 Jan - Paint is going on - 3 new vids up.

Yeah, plus as I said, I buggered it up a bit. I haven't had the time to put on paint tonight as I had to organise my selections for the first semester of university this year tonight. Selection opens at 2 pm tomorrow and I don't want to miss out on my first choices. So I'll do one coat a night... starting tomorrow...

Still, I went out and snaded back the filler that was still poking up out of the rear cowl. I really didn't take it back far enough before, or the time after that when I fixed it, but I promise this time it's proper fixed ;)

I may have posted it before but just in case, the whole spray vs roller debate has been covered indepth in this thread which is eventually archived and repoened twice. i think in total there's 3 threads and nearly 200 pages!
http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=2331682&page=0&fpart=1&vc=1

Ultimately there's reasons for and against both ways but I think this way works well for me, so far.

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 8 Jan - Paint is going on - 3 new vids up.

Cheers Hoosier. I'm trying to get the paint all done by start of first semester in late february. I'm hopeful.

And by the way Swag, sorry about the singing there my man. I did say I would. I just didn't say that a) I'd do it well or b) I'd do it very much.

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 8 Jan - Paint is going on - 3 new vids up.

Yeah about that 'singing', at least your a great at choking the 6 string. ;)

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 8 Jan - Paint is going on - 3 new vids up.

Yeah, I just wasn't warmed up :p

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 8 Jan - Paint is going on - 3 new vids up.

I managed to get another coat on everything last night as I'm doing 1 coat a day at the moment. Well that's the challenge I've set myself for now. I also got a couple of good solid coats of filler primer on the tank so that'll get the first coat of black tomorrow.

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 8 Jan - Paint is going on - 3 new vids up.

I've not kept onto the 1 coat a day regime that I was running with today because I felt I was using too many rollers doing only a small part of the things that needed painting. For that reason I spent the afternoon getting the fairing and the tank (it really warranted another hit of filler primer and further sanding to get it perfect) both prepped for their first coats at the same time as doing the third coat on the side covers and the second on the rear cowl. This means I'll need to work a lot quicker as the paint does go off very rapidly, but I can always add a dash more thinners if that happens. First coats wil be on tomorrow.

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 8 Jan - Paint is going on - 3 new vids up.

Staffy, you're my hero mate! Keep it up and keep singing too!

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 8 Jan - Paint is going on - 3 new vids up.

You effing bet! :D

Re: CX500 "Bastardwing" - 8 Jan - Paint is going on - 3 new vids up.

Cheers El Presidente. ;)

First coat on the fairing and tank today. I'm psyched. The garage is off limits right now with bunting telling the family to keep the hell out. I'm hoping it'll go off quick enough for a second coat later this afternoon/evening.
