DOT vs Novelty lids

Hey folks, I have a question regarding helmets and want to sorry if this has been asked before, I would search but I'm on my phone and doesn't work for some reason... Anyways
Fairly new to riding, I bought a dot turtleshell online a few weeks back, as soon I got it I tried it on and hated it! Bulky, heavy, didn't look right on my head.. so I did some research and found out those bad ass helmets I see some people wearing are actually novelty lids, so I ended up ordering one I like online, just got it and love it, looks great feels better all the good stuff but in the back off my mind I know its not that safe, although I'm just riding my cb350 around town...
I wanna know what you guys think? What do you guys use, all that, thanks for the help

I have lids that I use; one is DOT and the other isnt...

The helmet thats DOT is a ICON Carbon Airframe Lifeform helmet (full face and very sport's bike esq)

The NON-Dot helmet is a Loser Machine helmet, its probably the style you are talking about but you can get a slightly more bulky version that would be DOT, its just still less effective than a full-face; regardless if its DOT or not.

I personally feel the need to say always put your safety first...
The bike looks cool regardless of how goofy your helmet might look, remember that!
Just put your safety first... We want to keep our riders on the road, as much as we all like cool things, think safety first. Just my 2 cents.

Side note: if you are a new rider, get a legit helmet - it will give you much more confidence, and you need that to develop your skills.

Non DOT and vintage helmets are only good for scraping your brains off of the street. They provide 0 protection. That said, Ill admit that when just cruising around town, I wear a 3/4 lid from the 70s. Its all up to you what you strap onto your skull. Now that Ive done the preaching thing, there are several companies that now make DOT vintage styles helmets. Biltwell, Bell, etc...

When you crash at say 30mph and your head hits a kerb, does it make any difference if you came off a CB350 or aCBR1000RR? Your head is still mush. Wear a good helmet. That little voice in your head is the voice of reason. Listen to it - and then buy a light, good quality helmet.

I get nervous at speed wearing anything but a full face. I don't care what I look like. I've scraped the nose of my helmets on the ground enough times that I wouldn't have a face right now if I was wearing anything else. Don't think it won't happen to you. Don't let it scare you, but it's not IF you go down, it's WHEN you go down.

With that being said, I always support 'choice', so wear what you feel comfortable in.

I wear a full-face Shoei RF1100. I crashed, riding around the city, wearing my Shoei RF1000. That helmet saved my brains from being knocked around inside my skull, my teeth from eating concrete, my jaw from breaking.

Buy a proper helmet. Riding a motorcycle makes you cooler than anyone else out there. Wearing novelty helmets, tank tops and flip flops makes you look like a moron and nullifies the coolness factor you gained swinging your leg over the bike in the first place.

If you want an open-face helmet and something that keeps you from looking like the Great Gazoo, check out the Bell 500 line as well as the suggestions above.

After bouncing my head off the pavement at 45mph last June, I can accurately tell you that I'm very happy with my full face helmet choice. My face and my brain agree.

IMO, if you wear non DOT helmets, you're just not that smart. But then I guess you can afford to wear non DOT, as you're apparently not protecting much in the first place.

Helmets are cheaper than life support.

Nothing stupid about it. It's just more dangerous. Riding motorcycles is dangerous, we still do that instead of driving cars. There are also quite a few people out there who hit their head on the asphalt at 45 and never touched 2 wheels again. If you do decide to go full face, do it right. Get an Arai, Shoei, Suomy.

Don't just get a DOT approved helmet make sure it is SNELL approved as well. My head hit the ground at 30mph and I didn't even feel it and I came out ok. I think?

Would you trust your girlfriend, wife, or child wearing a non-dot? No. So don't trust one on yourself.

Go out helmet shopping. try on every full face helmet you can, and see whats most comfortable. ignore the price. Buy it. when you crash, thank to god that you had on a full face DOT approved helmet, and that your chin is in-tact and that you are not dead.

Here is some good in-depth review of helmet safety myths and truths. What goes into a DOT versus a SNELL approved helmet and should you care?? In the end of this long write up, it depends on how you plan to fall.

Read and educate yourself:

You got me. I planned to fall at 30mph, land on my head, and shatter my arm in 2 places. DOT/SNELL just offers more protection for your money than just DOT.

the more you pay on helmets, you usually get greater protection as well as greater comfort. 500 dollars is cheap compared to the cost of your life, or the cost of serious surgery.

Full face all the way. I have a Suomy Vandal and an ICON Variant. Both are awesome. Bang for the buck the Suomy is a great helmet.

Be safe and dont just worry about playing dress up....

There are "vintage" looking options for DOT helmets.
something like the nolan N30 or bell 500
you can get a good comfortable helmet for under $200.

and it doesnt really matter that you are only doing 30mph......that is if the person that hits you is doing 50....

another thing your not out in shorts, T shirt and your costume helmet are you?

there are a ton of cliché answers to this question
cheap helmet=cheap head
buy the helmet that you think your head is worth
and if you have to ask then its unsafe....
