DOT vs Novelty lids

My 2 cents.

I have a 72 CB450, I wear a Shoei TZ-R and a Joe Rocket Hemp armoured jacket.
I could care less if I don't look the vintage role.

Here in Toronto it's been stupid hot/humid lately.
I would rather sweat than bleed.

I would wear a Full face but i really can't see with one on. I know people say thats a myth but I own a full face and i've had several close calls wearing it because i can't see down around close to my bike and heat is fatiguing. I wear a 3/4 helmet. I feel that I can see better. and It still provides more protection than a half helmet and still feels cooler temperature than the full face. I have a full face a 3/4 and a half helmet. The 3/4 is my favorite.

you're right. according to the hurt report (where helmets were collected from real accidents and studied) you've increased the protection of your head from
0%= no helmet
to
38.6% = brain bucket
to a whopping
54.7% = 3/4 helmet.
it's only a small 45.3% left. and why worry about that. it's just your face you're talking about. no biggie. ;)

honestly, i don't care. it's your head and face. i don't care if people go with no helmet. i believe in freedom. but don't fool yourself. just admit that you are knowingly taking a greater risk. and if you're ok with that, then fine. it's your body. we all calculate the risks we take every day and make the decisions that we feel comfortable with.

oh don't get me wrong I understand the risks of having the face be open in the event of a crash. I'm just saying I feel as though I have a greater chance of having a crash with a full face because like i said I honestly have had some close calls because of not being able to see down around my bike. It could just be that specific full face helmet maybe a different brand wouldn't be as bad. My full face is a Vega. I do wear it at night though. You can't see down around your bike at night anyways and i figured I have a greater chance of hitting something at night so I wear the full face. I wont ride with a half helmet. Its too hard on your ears and more Fatiguing if you ask me. Not to mention the lack of protection to the sides and back of your head.

Why in Dogs name do these helmet threads go on for so long? Full face helmets offer the most protection. Non DOT helmets offer 0 protection. Everything else falls in between. We're all grownups. Do whatever youre comfortable with. Its all common sense.

I'm going to start a thread on neck braces. Oh what, you guys don't wear one? It's the tits.

Ok, even though that's a rhetorical question, I actually thought about it for a second. I believe it's because I feel important when I see my opinions in public print. 8)

i think all threads on this forum that get any life go on for a while. for crying out loud, some build threads are 80 plus pages long. i honestly don't think this thread was so bad. no name calling or... "i'm better than you are because..." someone asked a question about the helmet to wear. some others helped educate where they could. there is very little "arguing" going on. i would think out of this whole thread one of the most "argumentative" posts would be the one i posted showing the percentages. but i would say that would be more because voice inflection isn't included in online chats. not because it's intended to be argumentative.

i too agree that you should wear what you want to wear. just make sure you're informed. i don't see why anyone would wear anything less than
a fullfaced helmet
PROPER RIDING boots
gloves
armored coat
pants
but i believe everyone should have the freedom to leave any/all of them off the list if they want to. again, just inform yourself.

I'll agree to the above, and while I own most of that gear (bar the pants) I don't always wear anything except the helmet when going for a short trip such as 3 minutes to the local supermarket for some bread and milk. Thats because its my choice and I can make it (except for the approved helmet which is madnated by law here).

Now, one more thing I will say is that if you plan on NOT wearing some aspect of gear such as a jacket, gloves or especially an approved helmet, I will ask that you please be in a health fund. I'm a semi-broke barman and am in a decent health fund, whats your excuse? Anyway, just something to think about as its one thing to come off and quite another to be able to be fixed afterwards.

Cheers - boingk

I probably should wear more gear but I look at all the risks I take every day and evaluate what risks i'm willing to take. I wear a pair of Justin ropers, blue jeans, Tshirt and a 3/4 helmet. I wouldn't ride without any helmet at all, thats too far outside of my comfortable level of risks. To each their own. If you want to wear full on gear and a full face helmet or wrap yourself in bubblewrap more power to ya. If you don't wear any protective gear at all thats your choice. We only live once and If we weren't willing to take some risk to enjoy life we wouldn't be bikers to begin with. I don't believe in helmet laws or seatbelt laws for that matter because i think its a persons choice even though I chose to wear both.
