DOT vs Novelty lids

Ask Tim what happens with open faced lids at 100+ MPH....Hahaha. Mama Tried. I now am the proud owner of a Shoei RF1100....not again! Also, after being on the ambulance for 11 years full time, I have seen the result of MANY MANY cycle crashes. Some with no helmet, some with novelty, and some with the top of the line. I can only recall one person that died wearing a proper full face, but he was ran over by a car after he came off of the bike. I can only think of 3 of SEVERAL that DIDN'T die while wearing a novelty lid. Most of them were Harley guys wearing what we lovingly refer to as "the brain bucket"

Ok so I've been searching for full face helmets but almost everything has graphics which I def don't want, and the plain blacks all still have logos and vents all over...

Anyone know of or has seen a full black (hopefully mate) full face helmet?? With alittle more of the vintage look (more circular) as plain as it possibly gets?
 
a buddy just bought a vstar950 yesterday and got an HJC cl16 in flat black tossed in on the deal. it looks pretty good.

You've made the jump to fullface, but you still are going for cool instead of safety. I agree, most of the graphics suck, but vents are a very good thing. If you get a helmet that does not vent well (like the oldschool fullface helmets) then you are going to despise the thing, and you will end up not wearing it. Get something that is comfortable (vents well, fits the shape of your head well, etc..) then find the color you like.

I wear one of these Bell Vortex helmets, the styling isn't too crazy, the price point is pretty good, and there is plenty of airflow.

Buy whatever helmet you like. Go and try as many on as possible. If you can afford it, and it fits you well... You have a winner.
 
I got this helmet before the beginning of this season. Since I apparently have some sort of GIGANTIC MELON, I was able to find a 3XL that fit nice and snug. It's perfect for the shape of my head. The truly amazing bonus with this helmet is that is aerodynamic beyond belief! I was shocked at how solid it feels, even in stiff winds. No more bobble head while riding. Fit, finish and performance for under 300 bucks. Me likey.

I have an HJC. Snell 2005 rated. I have to have a Snell 2005 rated for racing. I picked it up brand new at Malcolm Smiths Motorsports blow out sale last year for $60. Figured I couldn't beat that.

Glad you decided on a full face. Those little beany things look about as useful as nothing. A bit like pissin' into a hurricane and hoping to stay dry. As I;ve said many times before. Cool is fleeting, dead is forever.

Heres some of my helmets I've had over the years. The pudding bowl I bought in 1967. They ae all nothing more than decorations. I doubt I would trust any of them.

Go to a shop and try on as many helmets as you can. Find the one that fits best, is the most comfortable, and is the best quality. THEN find the one in that model that looks the best to you.

Stop thinking about how cool you're gonna look on your bike. It wont matter once you're face is peeled off or you're a veggie.

Dress for the fall, not for the ride.

Heads come in all shapes and sizes. Luckily helmets do to. :)
I used to have problems with headaches because a helmet that fit tight enough everywhere, was too tight front to back. (think '70s) Then came Arai 8) The old RX-7 and the new RX-Q fit my melon perfectly, the dual sport ain't bad neaither. ;)
They ARE a might pricey though, but I consider the price of stuff divided by the number of times I use it, and it's not so bad.

Man, I don't know why any motorcyclist would wear anything but a full face helmet!
 
Ya ya, Indian Larry died on his bike and wasnt wearing a helmet.

He was also (like in the pic) standing on the seat of his bike, while performing a stunt show.

Not exactly relevant to a new riders queries on what helmet he should buy.

Unless of course he plans on opening his own stunt show soon...
 
great thread, some food for thought, mmmm, jello brain.... lol. I decided as a new rider to go full face helmet, my biggest problem was getting my glasses on inside the helmets, i found one shoei that worked but too pricy ended up settling on a midrange HJC, which evidently seems to be my brand as they fit good also replaced a cheapy dirt bike helmet with a HJC. been very happy with them.

I also almost had a fatal injury off-roading doing the equivalent of a high side and landing on my head, and shoulder. Got lucky on that one, i broke the foam layer free from the shell on that helmet, besides screwing up my neck royally got out of that one without any major injuries

On all the retarded graphics if you look around there are places that sell one colour helmets. most brands seem to have them available too, I agree riding a 40yr old bike wearing a graphic'd out lid looks a little dumb. If they dont carry monochromatic helmets ask if they will order them most of the time they will but dont stock them because the clown helmets sell better.
