Hmmm, I think today's graphics are awesome. Monochrome does zero for me. Anything to make me more visible to cagers short of a helmet mohawk! :-D

The reducers and other such chemicals in paints are supposedly very bad for the styrofoam stuff that makes the helmet work. When the shells are painted at the factory they are painted before the liners are installed I believe. If you check manufacturers' websites or contact them directly, I'm pretty sure they will all caution against painting your helmet.

let me just say wow. great thread. i honestly had the thought that there were more of you on this forum that were more concerned with looking cool than being safe. through i was a bit of an odd ball here (atgatt). i believe in freedom (government should not protect you from your own stupidity), but will pick a fullface for myself every time.

I high sided a GT1000. It totaled the bike, broke my first and third ribs. I'm really glad I had on my Arai. I'm glad I still have my right ear as well. I got another GT and another Arai. I like my light smoke shield and being able to keep the wind out of my face. The cool thing about Arai is that you can get a helmet to fit any head shape.

I think full faces are a lot cooler that some shit bucket useless beanie. Steve McQueen was the essence of cool and didn't need to advertise it by wearing a dumbass beanie.
But then, maybe being a drooling vegetable for the rest of your life could be cool.

you'll be fine? something is better than nothing? You're kidding right? I'm not going to judge anyone by what lid they wear but the guy is new and looking for advice... that was not good advice. Yeah, I'm still working on my brother to get him to stop wearing friggin shorts and sandals when he rides. I'll be buying full-faces for my wife and I when my next bike rolls around, along with a nice jacket for her.
For those of you arguing between Snell and DOT, there have been studies suggesting that many Snell2005 rated helmets, in the efforts to meet certain tests, made their helmets TOO hard--meaning that it caused excessive brain trauma from g-forces transmitted to the wearer. This was an even greater concern for lighter/smaller heads, where the forces transmitted were shown to be fatal, where in the same tests, non-Snell2005 helmets "gave" a little more and transmitted less shock to the head.
BUT, I believe the Snell foundation was made aware of this, and have fixed that condition in their new Snell2010 standard. Unfortunately, the previous helmets are still allowed to be sold for several years.

I have to ask: has anyone ever seen a real-life example that would mimic, and therefore justify, the "spike" test (the thin, fairly sharp impaling metal cylinder)? I really hope someone can show me my ignorance on this one, because so far it seems like it's a precaution against Gerard Butler stepping out of the movie "300" and chucking a spear at you, lol.

Ive seen a TON of shit on the roads, scrap metal some of it. Ive also watched a documetery on TV about a biker who took a tree branch to the face while wearing a helmet.
I cant find it at work however, there was a video of GP bikers going down on the course with pictures of road obsticles grafted in for them to slide/ crash in to like busses, trees, benches, walls, etc... the point was safety and riding style. The quote in the end was to the effect of "If I rode like this on the road, I would be dead all ready". Im sure someone can find that video.

The fact that wearing no helmet is cooler. Wearing that keeps the fuzz off your back and you still feel free.

The nice thing about Scorpion helmets are the shields. they are tough and really will not fog up. I have a scorpion that I wear on occasion but my Arai fits better.
