It's bloody cold in Melbourne right now. I got the fireplace in the man cave hot to get the engine parts up to temp before painting with VHT satin black.
Then I baked them for an hour to cure.
Well I seem to be building the bike from the oddball year. Parts for a 73 or a 75 onwards are much easier to find.....
So I had to cut most of my own gaskets
I have not been able to find an oil pump for this model so running pre mix for now.
Bolted the exhaust back on and the carb and took it for a ride.
Gear changes work well now and overall a big improvement in power through the bottom and mid range. Top end is still lacking though.
Will need to do some work on the jetting I think.
Time to start on the front end.
Made brackets and a number plate. Planning to round off the corners of the plate little.
Ordered some smaller led indicators to replace these monster old Suzuki dirtbike ones.
Also ordered a fork brace that I will use to mount the front guard too.
Finally making some progress
Had some time this weekend to change the front indicators and get rid of the ping pong bat sized Suzuki dirtbike indicators.
Mounted the clamps for a low mount front mud guard for when it turns up.
Spent some time on the jetting too. The pilot jet seems good, but the main is too lean. I moved from 140 to 150, 160, and now at 180. Still to lean.
Ordering a set of bigger jets today to keep the trial and error going.
Trying to get this bike presentable for the DGR on September 27.
A mate of mine has no bike right now so I a want to have this looking ok for him to ride.
I can't get the frame blasted and power coated at the moment due to covid lockdown in Melbourne, so I am planning to get a coat of paint on the exhaust, oil tank, fuel tank and number plate, plus mirrors and tail light.
A few weeks ago I had a fire at home to get rid of some waste wood and through the exhaust on to burn out the carbon and any oil. It smoked for hours and got red hot.
Today I painted it and put it back on the bike.
Would love to get a performance expansion chamber one day.
Spent some time with the heat gun to remove stickers that had been on place for 46 years.
They did not want to come off.
Bit of a shame really, but the tank has surface rust and dents that need repair.
The oil tank is in a similar state to the fuel tank.
Removed stickers with heat the hit it with a wire wheel and a flap wheel. Half an hour later and it looking the goods. Some dents to fill, then prime and paint.
Seat base, fuel tank and oil tank have been getting the dents and scratches filled. Some were pretty big.
Got some new mirrors on too.
Hopefully I will hit the tanks and seat with primer tomorrow.
