If sausage hadn't entered his CL360, miob's BMW would have got my vote. They are both very nice and I would love to own both of those kinds of bikes someday but since I just picked up a CL360, my vote went to sausage.

Props to all that entered! ;)

hi guys - thanks for the nomination. Wont say too much other than my whole progress has been posted on this site cause i want top give back as much as ive taken.

I suppose the biggest thing i can say i have done everything (except the gold paint) in my single car garage with minimal tools and lots of Macgyver stylin. the paint was done by a friend who is a panel beater (Redback in Fyshwick, Canberra if anyone is interested). Most parts came from z1enterpises, ebay, the guages are Zodiac, dunlop tyres.

I managed to find an even older grungier "before" photo than is in my thread...and a few others to show the progress

i bought it from ebay in this state - i turned the bars upside down within 5 minutes of ownership...

The frame was powdercoated and then i hit it up with some black enamel. TIP - just get your frame powdercoated. Its stronger and wont take up so much time and effort for no real gain over powdercoat...

Assembly - another tip - you dont need a workbench when you have milkcrates...

shocks.jpg

the guage setup was deisgned by me using AutoCAD. I had a friend who had access to a CNC cut it out for me (2 versions) when his boss wasnt looking...

and this is how she stands now. I just have to finsh the brakes, fill her with fuel, kick her in the guts and BOOM ill be riding into the sunset! (with gold glistening...)

MIOBs beemer is fuckin great! I love that bike even more after reading some of the stuff he used. I would swap my cb750 for a boxer in a second! These are all excellent bikes, great designs, and well built. Now Im gonna go cut my wifes thermos apart! ;D

On a side note, I vote for no tie. If the votes end up even, I say we should have a run off.

I couldn't disagree more... If a bike is good enough to tie then it's good enough to be on the banner.

Personally I love seeing my bike up there and to share it with Woodys awesome machine is an absolute honor.
With all the fantastic builds on this site, to have my bike recognised and on that banner makes all the time and effort worth it and I'll share that feeling with anyone.

The birth of Red Molly

I found the bike on craigslist one day during lunch at work and called the owner to set up a time to take a look at the bike after work. I made it out to the guys house and the older gentleman walked me out to his shed to where he had kept the bike since the early seventies. He had tried to get it started a few times since then but was unsuccessful and the bike just sat in the dark shed all alone. The bike was in pretty poor shape but the price was right and I really wanted an older Honda project. We agreed on a price and Molly and I headed home.

The tear down began and pretty soon I was left with a frame and several boxes of parts. I sat in the garage with the frame and started sketching out what i wanted the bike to look like. The most important part was the tail and figuring out how i was going to get the battery out of the center of the frame and relocated behind the seat. i also wanted to make sure that I was going to have enough room to move around and shift my weight when riding the bike.

I used a lexan base to graft the fiberglass tail section onto. I also wanted integrate the tail light into the rear section as well. I used the battery out of my CBR to base the tail section around and finally created the look that i was looking for.

The motor was torn down to the crank and while inside I x'd the gears for a tighter shifting pattern, and added high compression pistons. The rest of the engine was rebuilt with stock components. I added a ricks motorsports stator and rectifier to eliminated all of the original insufficient electronics. Carbs were jetted, and adjusted for the pods and exhaust. The exhaust is mandrel bent 1.5 tube that I made with a local guy in my area. We made one set up with various bends and welding. The final set is a single stick on each side with no welds. 17" shorty megs to finish it out.

The paint is Dupont base and clear (Viper Red and Corvette Silver)

I'll be keeping this one for a while but the motor will be coming out for an upgrade. It does pretty good but I plan to ride the piss out of this thing and would like to beef up the top end a little.

Thanks Again for the nomination - Ride safe and ride red!

My vote goes to Miob for his '88 BMW. I am impressed by the bike and most impressed with the way he has completed and documented his build. It was done on a tight budget and I thought the video was excellent. It looked like a professional quality film with great camera angles and music.

You have my vote

Well, unfortunately, that's about right numbers wise. There are really only about that many ACTIVE members. :( :( :(

Actually, we get about 13,000 UNIQUE visitors every month, well above our actual registered user base. Keep in mind you don't have to be registered to view the site :)

Some Google stats from December 2009:

43,365 Visits
13,159 Absolute Unique Visitors
495,232 Pageviews
11.42 Average Pageviews
11:23 Time on Site

So 13,000 different people visited the site in December, a total of 43,000 times and stayed on the site for 11 minutes each visit. That's a TON of traffic for a site of our type and size.

And, when you look at the monthly votes of about 100 or so on the SOHC4 forum's bike of the month, vs. their 8,600 registered members... ;) we're doing just fine with 100+ votes each month and 1/2 the registered members.

The winner of the banner spot each month will have their bike viewed by 13,000 unique people in the month it's up there, over 500,000 times!

Those numbers are amazing!!

Who'd a thunk it back in the beginning, eh Tim?!

One vote for the BMW- That bike has a very original look and what tipped the scales for me was that it was done on a budget. It's a lot harder to pull a rabbit outta the hat when you can't afford a cape! The brown leather stripe also was brilliant I thought . I did think the Guzzi sounded sweet though but for purely aesthitic reasons I believe the Beamer has it . I wonder how fast he's had it on the autobahn?

Thank you :)

To answer your question: I haven't had it on the autobahn at all... The autobahns are only an hour away, but they're in Germany. And in Germany you're exhaust pipe needs to have a mark that it's been tested by the European union. Mine doesn't and it's a bit noisy..... I've I get caught I'll have to leave the bike behind and walk back ;)

But it doesn't have a very high top speed, I've had it up to only something like 180 km/h and it felt like it was about to explode. It is a R100 (1000cc egine) in a R80 frame with an R60 gearbox (hence the kickstarter). It has a very low geairing. So the top speed isn't very high, but nothing's faster at the traffic lightsand it still does the ton ;D
It's absolutely incredible when you accelerate out of a corner. It has great brakes too, so the twisty Dutch dike roads are a paradise with this bike.

Miob, i love that BMW but even more so is the CX you built that's on your blog. I can't find anything to do with the build however. Can you post up a bit of a thread on this forum or something or point me in the direction of where we can look at the detail on this bike?

Holy crap - it's the 31st and voting is CLOSED!

We have a winner - miob's awesome BMW!

Wow, didn't really expect my BMW to be this popular. Thanks guys!!

The short background story:

When I decided I wanted to build a caferacer for myself I a first set out looking for a Moto Guzzi. The guy that offered me a test ride on a Le Mans he had for sale also had a BMW R100 and insiseted I should try that one aswell. It was love at first sight. His BMW was way to expensive for the shape it was in and I decided I wanted a mono, so I looked for another one.

This is the one I found:

As you can see: Not in the best of shapes, but it had some nice parts (Wilbers suspention, a 1000cc engine instead of the 800 of the standard mono) and it was cheap. Cheap is the key word in my build: I'm a student and I really don't have much to spend. So I had to be creative, for example:

kontje007zk7.jpg

The seat area is made of a bicycle carrier I found in someone's trash (Yes, I have no shame)

And I made the exhaust out of a gravy bowl and a thermos for coffee:

img9044.jpg

And I used a salt and vinegar set of IKEA for velocity stacks.

The only expensive part on my bike is the Acewell tacho. I definetely wanted a tacho, a rev counter and all the idiot lights, but I also wanted a minimal cockpit. This was in my eyes by far the best thing to do:

And this is the result:

And a video:

That, in short, is the story of my bike. I'm sorry if it wasn't in perfect english. It's not my first language and I'm a lot better with an angle grinder than I am with a keyboard.

I'll make a write up of the build of the CX chopper in a few weeks, promised.
