I picked up a CB175 for my wife after i sold Big Blue. I was debating between a street tracker or a brat bike. The 175 is a stamped steel frame. Pretty much crap for building and you ave to run stock filters. I cam across an SL175. it has a tube frame so Im going to combine the 2 bikes and make one uber cool one.
Brought it home.
Fixed it up and thought about running it stock for awhile.
The frame where it meets the tank is very narrow. The seat i build will ride on the frame rails and that would make for a tiny seat at the front. So i cut it out and im going to weld in some new rail a little wider.
This one is going on hold for a month. Im in a little over my head on the frame so next month STONENCK is going to help me out bending some tube and figuring out the best way to do this. Stay tuned.
No progress on the frame as of yet. It is nice to have a coker tire company in the same city. Dropped off the 1.85 front rim ,spokes, nipples, hub and brake plate to the Powder coater today. We will see what the damage on that was. I took the hub to an auto machine shop and asked if they could turn my drum. He looked at funny and said he had never done one like that before but he would give it a try. 10 minutes and 10 dollars later it had a fresh braking surface for the shoes.
I think lacing wheels is one of my favorite parts of a build. Especially when they are super cool ones. I may hate myself for doing white but I think its going to look real good. at least for for a little while till the chain grease sticks to it. Here are the parts back from the PCer.
Front wheel is put together and has new treads on it. Also hit some of the bike with a little rattle can to give me an idea of what its going to look like.
Rear wheel is out to the powder coater today. THe side rails are welded in. Still trying to decide on the rear hoop. It all hinges on the rear wheel. Once i have that i can pick the fender and then i can set the hoop. I think my bigest problem is going to be finding a set of SL175 pipes to run untill i can build my own. I think this is the paint scheme im going to go with.
I decided to work on the front end tonight. Goal was to make and weld on a bracket to mount the headlight. When i took the triple and covers off this is what i found
No worries. Thats why i have a spare parts bike. So I went and took the front end off that bike. This is what i found on that one.
So between the 2 bikes i think i will be able to make up one decent set of forks to run. 661
Welded up a headlight mount. It sits a little to far forward so i need to drill a new hole to move the light closer to the neck. Got some new fork seals and the lowers were dropped off at the Powder coater today. The rim and hub should be back on monday then i can mock up the rear hoop and fender.
Trying to figure out where I want to put the blinkers. I would run the bike without them but my wife will ride it sometimes and she wants the safety stuff. Shes the brains in this operation. The rear blinkers i think will mount right behind the shocks. Ill weld on a tab or a bung for them to thread into. For the front I would like them on the forks somewhere but if i cant find a spot that looks goo i think i might mount them below the tank on the front downtubes. IDK just typing out loud.
For pipes, i saw on another thread building an SL175 cafe, he was running CL pipes and they looked like that fit. So im pretty excited to find out how well they fit.
Laced and trued the rear wheel. Once the spokes were in the right place this wheel basically trued itself. By far the easiest wheel i have ever done. Need to pick up a tube and then mount the tire.
I also took a shot of my weld for the new frame tubes.
