FINISHED! Ready To Ride...1971 cb350

So after months of searching I finally ran into the right deal to pick up my first bike and start my first build. The bike is a 71' cb350 with just under 12,500 miles. The guy said the bike was running when he parked it back in 2006 so I figured it would be worth a shot and go take a look even though he said it wasn't currently running cause the the battery was dead and the tank was drained but the overall condition looked pretty good. The engine turned over, was able to run through the gears, the tank has very minimal rust, and after talking to the owner for awhile it turns out he parked it because he was a little too scared to be riding it. Talked the price down to my budget and took it home.

I couldn't wait till the next day to check spark and try to get it to fire so I hooked up a battery charger and sprayed starter fluid in the airbox and after 5 or so kick she fired. The next day I added gas and took it for a ride around the driveway but it ran super rough and appeared to only be running on one cylinder.

At this point my plan is tear down the engine and carbs and rebuild both. Can't wait to get this thing running properly.

How it looked when I first saw it

Few more pics

Really happy with the condition of the pistons and valves.

Started cleaning

Re: My First Build. 1971 cb350

Your better at documenting a build than me. Cant wait to get a pic with our bikes together

Re: My First Build. 1971 cb350

Yah I like the orange also but chances are I will be changing the tank and the color but for now Im just focused on getting it to run really good

Re: My First Build. 1971 cb350

I'm looking to order a entire gasket kit, seal kit, and carb gasket kit tomorrow and I was wondering if anyone knows a good place to order from?

How it stands right now

Some of you might recognize my brothers cafe from his build thread.

Re: My First Build. 1971 cb350

I've run into a few issues that are a bit frustrating but nothing too terrible like a previous owner must have cross threaded both spark plugs in so I'm going to have to do a helicoil on both cylinders.

I'm still looking for a good place to order a gasket kit and seal kit. Anyone have any feedback on https://www.denniskirk.com/frontpage.jsp or http://www.siriusconinc.com/search_result.php?make=1&model=350&part=6&partno=&x=23&y=9&search=search ? Any feedback would be great

Thinking about doing something like this.

Re: My First Build. 1971 cb350

Good luck on the build! I just picked up a 71 cl and started a thread. I'm on vacation now and have a pile of parts being delivered one by one at my place. All I want to do is go open the boxes...

Thanks bud!Yah I know the feeling, all day at work I'm thinking about going home and working on this thing and I haven't even gotten any parts in the mail yet haha. I'm looking forward to seeing your build when you get back and start on the bike again.

Re: My First Build. 1971 cb350

Now that Christmas has passed I was finally able to order all my engine gaskets, seals, carb gaskets, and clip ons. Cant wait till its all delivered and I can get this thing running again.

Re: My First Build. 1971 cb350

Sorry for the lack of updates. Since my last post Ive recieved my clipons from airtech streamlining and I must say I am very happy with the quality and I would recomend them to others. I have also finished painting my engin and have begun reassembling it and I love how well it came out. Next on my list is to buy a welder and start on my seat. I will attach some pics later tonight

Re: My First Build. 1971 cb350

Ehhh life has been busy lately so I haven't had the chance to update my build in a long time. I feel like I'm getting pretty close to getting this thing done, I'm aiming to have it done by April. I'll update later with pics of how it sits now in a day or two hopefully with a better camera, most of the pics below are from my cell phone sorry.

Got my airtech clip ons and the quality is amazing I'm really happy with them.

The engine is pretty much done but I'm waiting to get my Ricks Motorsport Electrics "Hot Shot" High Output Charging Kit in and to finish polishing a few bits and pieces.

Motobits rear sets! Pics don't do these things justice

Received my NOS 69' cb350 fuel tank last week and just got my emblems and fuel cap yesterday. Emblems will need a bit of touch up but overall quality is good. The tank is also in great shape other than one small dent on the bottom corner :( Probably going to have to use body filler on it :( I can't find the fuel tank knee grips anywhere :'(

Bell Custom 500 in plain white with a chrome bubble shield. :D

Headlight, taillight, battery, charging system, velocity stacks, jets, tires, and various shit to get this thing goin are in the mail now. A buddy will also be hooking me up with a killer deal on some custom racetech suspension front and rear. Next steps are to finish up the battery box and weld a plate to protect the engine from debris from the rear tire. Then its off for powdercoating and I'll be putting this thing back together hopefully and building my seat.

Re: My First Build. 1971 cb350

Haha yah got a few small updates. This update is lacking pictures but I'll hopefully get some updated pics soon and post them.

I ran into some issues making my own seat so I opted to have Dustin Kott fab up a seat pan for me and do some more work on the frame. The frame has been de-tabbed, trimmed, and braced, battery relocation tray is under the seat, front fender has been trimmed and lowered. It will be getting sent in for powder coating any day now. http://www.kottmotorcycles.com/Kott_Motorcycles/Home.html

The wheels are currently getting new spokes, rim is being powder coated black and the hub and spokes will be polished out. A few other pieces are getting zinc plated

The engine is all buttoned up, new hotshot charging system is installed, carbs cleaned and rebuilt and waiting to be put back into the frame.

Re: My First Build. 1971 cb350*UPDATED 5-17-12*

We ran into a few delays but its full steam ahead at this point. Now that the seat is all done I have started with bondo to smooth it out for paint and the same goes for the tank. The frame and wheels are officially off for powder coating, new stainless spokes are in the mail, drums and a few engine parts are being polished, and a few other bits are off being zinc plated. Its been a long time coming but I'm finally starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Re: My First Build. 1971 cb350**UPDATED 5-17-12**

Awesome! Pretty cool gas tank! keep up the good work

Re: My First Build. 1971 cb350**UPDATED 5-17-12**

Love the seat pan, thought it would look cool if you kinda left the spot welds so they looked like rivets like on the older aluminum airplanes. Good work.
