FINISHED! Ready To Ride...1971 cb350

Re: My First Build. 1971 cb350*UPDATED 6-9-12*

Yah I'm seriously debating the clear powder, but I already purchased the paint and I've already tapped everything in my budget haha

Re: My First Build. 1971 cb350*UPDATED 6-9-12*

Ran into an issue with my carbs! The float bowl gasket I received isn't even close to be the right fit so I had to order new ones today. Pretty disappointed but I assembled one without the gasket just to mock it up and take a quick pic with the stacks.

Unfortunately I am going to have to keep the stock exhaust for a while till I can afford something else. I mocked that up very quickly for the picture also, it is just resting on the box for the picture.

Rear sets are mocked up, but need to be torn down for thread locking and final installation after I get it adjusted the way I want them.

I think I'm going to turn my attention towards the fuel tank again though white I wait for the carb gasket and front wheel seal, get it all stripped and sanded down and get the seat and tank painted and upholstered.

great build mate love the kott seat. is that a cl175 tank? the whole package goes together nicely. well done ill be following this one for sure

Re: My First Build. 1971 cb350*UPDATED 6-10-12*

Yah Kott seats are amazing and they look much better in person.

The tank is from a cb350

Re: My First Build. 1971 cb350*UPDATED 6-10-12*

This will probably be the last pic for a week or two while I finish up the tank so I figured Id mock it up and roll her outside for a decent pic.

I knew this was coming but I have a clearance issue with the stock exhaust and rear sets so if anyone has any recommendations for a fix Id appreciate it.

Re: My First Build. 1971 cb350*UPDATED 6-10-12*

I can't seem to find a paint stripper that can even touch the paint on the tank. I have wet sanded the whole thing so far but I'm having a ton of trouble getting into all the corners and under the knee grip brackets. What kind of stripper would you guys recommend? I've tried lacquer thinner and a paint stripper so far and it didn't do anything.

I USED :
http://www.recochem.com.au/index.php/products/consumer_products/solvents/item/diggers_paint_stripper

on my tank, decals and other bits its a gel type stripper so it gets into the nooks and works a treat

Re: My First Build. 1971 cb350 *Help Needed*

Yah I've used a similar gel type stripper for everything so far and it had no issues at all but it really doesn't do a thing to my tank. Thanks for the link I'll look into this stuff

I have to chime in and let you know that I'm really liking this build. Early forks with springs outside, late 60's tank, seat flows! Can't wait to see whats next!

Thanks man I appreciate it. I don't post very often in other build threads but I've been following your build since you started it, really digging the direction you've taken it.

Re: My First Build. 1971 cb350 *Help Needed*

Few more pics from the other day. Hopefully I'll be able to clear the seat today and let it cure till the weekend and ship it off to get upholstered. You cans ee in the pics my clearance issues with the rear sets and exhaust but hopefully I can figure it out soon but if anyone has any suggestions I'd love to hear them

Yeah man, that thing looks beastly. Nice pics too, btw.

Re: My First Build. 1971 cb350 *Help Needed*

nice new pics, are those shocks stock im sourcing new ones for my cb200 at the moment and am looking for a set of 335mm ones. any recommendations?

Re: My First Build. 1971 cb350 *Help Needed*

The shocks are Koni's. They were on the bike when I bought it actually. I haven't looked around for shocks at all cause I knew I was just gonna clean these ones up. I'm not sure where to look, have you tried dime city cycles? Or the common sites like that?

Re: My First Build. 1971 cb350 *Help Needed*

So here's what I'm thinking...

One: New exhaust. But I'm really liking the look of the one you have... It fits the build.

Two: Dent in the mufflers where the rearset toe is to give it its full range. You could use a round pipe and a hammer to give it the shape it needs with uniformity. But it still looks like it may be hard for you to get your toe under the shifter even if it was dented. Not sure how big of a divot you'd have to put into it to give it the full range of motion though.

Moving the rearsets isn't really an option because of the way they're mounted to the frame/swingarm pivot. The only option to move the rearset would be to cut off the mount and move it higher, which I've seen done on multiple builds.

Sorry, I'm probably not much help. I'm sure these are all options you've thought of. Sucks that these rearsets aren't designed to work with the CB exhaust...

Re: My First Build. 1971 cb350 *Help Needed*

Hey thanks for the ideas I appreciate it.

One: I also like the exhaust I have now. I never liked it until I saw the bike all together though, my plan this whole time has been to replace it with a 2-1 but I'm out of cash and this has grown on me a lot so I'm going to try and make this work.

Two: Yah I debated denting the exhaust also and its still an option but I think the dent would be too large and would create a flow issue.

Relocating the rear sets isn't really an option, the frame is already powdercoated and the rider position is very comfortable and moving it up would make me very cramped.

Re: My First Build. 1971 cb350 *Help Needed*

This could look a little weird... But adding spacers to the mounting points between the passenger foot peg mounts and the rearset plate could push them out laterally away from the exhaust. You'll have to locate spacers and fasteners, but it could give you the room you need. Of course this will create other issues as far as the shift and brake arms...

I think a new exhaust may have to be in order to keep the motobits... But I'll keep thinking!

Re: My First Build. 1971 cb350 *Help Needed*

I tried that earlier and it does come quite close on the brake side, with a small dent it would probably clear no problem. But on the shifter side I relocated the kick stand and it is preventing the exhaust from being pushed in, though I might be able to heat it up and make a small bend around the stand.
