First Project - 72' CB350F

CB350f Cafe

Been Around the Block
Hey guys, the names Ryan. I figured since im in the middle of working on my bike, i might as well post up some pics! :p

I bought my CB350F summer/fall of 2010 for $400. It did not run and it was unfinished but it did have good compression so that must have convinced me enough to buy it. As you can see in this picture that the previous owner was in attempt to make it a cafe by first stretching the tank. There is a lot of work that needs to be done including: make a seat, new wiring harness, finishing the tank, etc.

So i was browsing around ebay and saw a tank that looked decent enough and cheap that i could just use that to ride around with until i finish the stretched tank. The title was displayed as a 350f tank so i bid and won. well... when UPS arrived is when i noticed a problem. It was a 350 tank. I was a little upset because it was a waste of $30, but then i came to realize it actually came useful. I could just cut it and use it as the hump to the seat i need to make. Problem solved!

Now let me catch up to where I am at the moment. I've been doing a lot of cleaning up. I have buffed a lot of the rust off and repainting parts a flat black. Recently I've purchased clubman bars and a wiring harness.

Springs soaking in baking soda and water. As you can see it was eliminating a lot of the crud since the liquid turned rather yellow.

After cleaning i painted them. it is kind of rough on the inside because some of the crud wouldnt come off and its hard getting your hands and even tools inside to clean it off.

here is one of the rear shocks painted.

And this is all of it put back together!

Holy... they certainly put some effort into that tank! Looks like a good project bike. So you're going to ditch that modern can...?

There are a lot of little things that im painting, not only to make it look good but to cover up the rough old metal ;)
There are more pieces that i have painted, ill just post them later because i dont have a picture of them yet.

A little bit too much effort. I had to actually cut open the tank and reweld it because well.. (it was kind of bad). But yes i think i am going to stick with the look. If its something ill eventually get annoyed or bored of then yes i may change things up a bit.

Earlier i said that tank that came off a 350 was going to be turned into a cafe seat. Heres a few angles. This is just placed for the time being to give a feel. I still need to tack it into place.

Your rear shocks painted up really nice! And I like the way that rear hump is coming along by using the tank.

Down: thanks! with a little time, equipment, and effort anything can happen.

Graham: Appreciate it. taking everything little by little. Ill do some more welding this weekend once it gets nice out and ill post some more pics.

That tank has potential but obviously needs a lot of work to make it work.

I agree with Ringo that the can has got to go. Upswept fat can really doesn't work with such a small svelte motorcycle. 4 into 4 would look good if you can pull it off.

I personally don't have a lot of experience with the 'feel' of a motorcycle so I'm at the moment just going to get this thing running and looking decent and if its something I cant accustom to then yes ill do some changing.
But thanks for the feedback :) anything helps.

As far as the modern can goes, i know what you all mean. It was put on when i bought the bike. I may eventually take it off.

I went ahead and painted my front forks flat black. I would put a clear coat to protect them but that would just make them glossy and thats not what im looking for.

I did get some of the seat tacked in. Ill have to put support underneath so its not so flimsy.

Im going to have to put some metal in the gap here.

the bike lives! kinda. got it running for a few seconds for the first time. It was running off one piston; the other 3 pipes were cold. checked spark plugs and the gaps are fine, so i checked the points and they were pretty off. I really dont want to mess with it so i was looking into getting a dyna s. checked their main site and:
DS1-1Dyna S Ignition System for Honda 1972-77 350/400 four cylinder$162.99
now, i knew they weren't cheap but god.. I know my cousin got a dyna s for his 750 for $70 or so brand new.

They do make flat clear, y'know.

The problem with flat paint w/o clear is that it has a tendency to eat rock chips like nobody's business.

That said, it looks great!
