Fisher Price: My first Cafe Racer; CB175

So, made some progress here in the last few days. I got the headers wrapped and heat shields installed to my liking. I forgot to take pictures. I figured I will ride the bike to someplace that isn't my driveway to take a picture. I am gonna have to wait for it to stop hailing. Damn Texas spring.

I did take pictures of the mirror install I did tonight. I would still prefer the racier no-mirror look but I have this fear of being squashed or have some cop write me a ticket. So, street legal it is.

Getting her done. Positive criticism your clip ons look a little long. What length are they? looks like you have plenty of room of tightening them up a bit. Great work on the rear sets. Peace to the Gods

I am still fussing with the position of the bars. I honestly hadn't given much thought to the length of the clip-ons. Now I am gonna have to consider trimming them down. I think you are right that tightening up the position would be beneficial. Thanks for the tip!
 
So, I haven't logged in for about 6 months. It's been bicycle season...that's what you do when you would melt with a motor between your legs.

The 175 sits as you last saw it. I think I rode it 6 times this summer. I am ashamed. But weather and schedule have gotten under control as of late so it is time to enjoy the work I did last winter...before I tear it apart this winter.

I would love to tell you guys that taking the summer off has given me some great ideas but it hasn't. Out of sight and what not.

I guess a paint job, some fresh wiring and tires and maybe a bitchin' belly tank. Probably gonna ditch the front indicators after state inspection this year.

PS I need some inspiration.
 
Stylistically it is so sweet looking to change the overall style, I agree with the clip ons need trimming but that is it! Some alloy rims and modern profile tyres, decent rear shocks, front end overhaul? Dunno, focus on getting the rolling chassis super efficient to make the most of modern tyre technology, even going down to 17". I'm thinking things that will improve performance rather than cosmetics?

I did service the fork last winter. I put 10wt oil in there. At first it was a bit harsh, but the clip-ons weight the front end a little more than the clubmans and I think I just got used to it.

I have been considering alloy rims for some time. I guess I need to pony up and do it. Anybody know of a good source for rims and spokes?

As for the clip-ons, what is a good median width? Currently, the cables have to be kinked a little to clear the fork ears. I guess that means new fork ears too.

Lastly, how about some shock recommendations?

So, got the itch to work on the bike this morning. Kinda went nuts. Highlights of the day were spilling gas everywhere while draining the tank & listening to the compressor run all day.

Got the frame stripped and de=tabbed. There wasn't as much extra weight as I had though, but still a significant amount. The list of rejected parts are: centerstand, battery box, tool box, chain gaurd mounts, steering lock and rear fender.

Modified the frame so I could never put the center stand back on it.

Done and done.

Tomorrow the plan is to weld up some better foot peg mounts and find a good powder-coater in the area.

The center stand had to be put to good use.

So it became a rear frame brace. Similar to the factory one the seat mounted on but I think this one may actually add some structure.

I gave up on new rearset mounts. I decided to use the passenger peg mounts...because...why not?

Any how, frame off the the powder-coater's tomorrow. Then it is time to finally decide on the wheels. Alloy rims or not. Thoughts?
 
Oh yea. I almost forgot. I am looking for the head lamp and trim ring for a '69-'70 cl 175. The bucket measures 6 inches outer diameter. It is smaller than the CB's light. Anybody got one?
 
Before you put back the swingarm, do some research on available bronze swingarm bushings. IIRC, the oem parts are the plastic type. They MIGHT share with CB160 parts, but I'm not sure.

Thanks for the tip on the swing arm bushings. I thought the plastic looked a little...well, makeshift. That is an upgrade I will pursue. Any hints on where to start looking?

Bronze bushings:

-- Will need to be precisely drilled to fit your swingarm pivot axle.

Last solution will be to have someone lathe a set up. Use your originals or a new OEM set as a template.
 
Got any updates as of late? I got pretty pumped when I saw the picture of your bike down to the fram again.

What jet sizes did you end up running in your carbs? Love the homemade manifolds for your carbs, how did they hold up?

thanks for the interest in my lil' project. The severe lack of winter contributed to my lack of progress. The frame was at the powdercoater's only overnight. They did a pretty nice job.

After that the frame sat for about 2 months while I wrestled with the engine. I had it as far apart as it will ever get. I broke the piston rings on the 3rd instal attempt.I figure this is good cause to rethink the engine rebuild. Maybe figure out some way to get an extra pony or two.

I justify my neglect of the CB with this:

Despite the Triumph and broken piston rings, I decided to make a move towards a rolling chassis even though I have not yet addressed the wheel or suspension porblem. Now that I have the Triumph I am toying with the idea of a little vintage racing. So, I can justify some alloy hoops and some engine hop-up. It'll still be street legal no matter what I decide.
Here it is as it sits now. The engine now occupies an entire folding table!

I will figure out what jets are in the carbs and let you guys know in a day or so.
