Found an old cb450 sitting in my barn

This is my first motorcycle project. Turns out my grandpa's old bike was still in the barn after he quit riding it 20-something years ago, so I decided I should awake the beast from it's slumber. First thing I did was empty the tank and clean out both the fuel cock and carbs (thankfully the switch was off the whole time it sat there) and replaced the gas lines. After cleaning most of the gunk from the tank, we put a little gas in it and pull-started it all day and got it to run. Now that that's in order, I'm in the process of obtaining an etching and relining kit for the tank. Since I've never fucked with anything equipped with dual carbs, I was wondering how to sync them, or if should even do that. Anyone have any suggestions?

p.s. I should have some pics up soon. I've been told this is a rare bike

I never would have thought of a cb450 as rare, but congrats on getting it running. If you go to dimecitycycles.com they sell vacuum gauges to sync the carbs. You hook one up to a vacuum port on each carb, then adjust the carbs until they are pulling the same Vacuum at idle, basically.

CB450 doesn't have vacuum ports, you have to do the carb synchronization 'by hand'. Search this forum and go get signed up at HondaTwins.net - and post pics!

Make sure to change the oil i'd you haven't already - the, uh, unique design of this motor is not forgiving of poor lubrication.

No kidding? Learn something new every day. Thanks for the info

Thanks guys! I have an old shop manual for it too, so I've been reading up on syncing the carbs, it should be no problem now. The project's kind of at a standstill right now until I get the tank cleaned up and relined. Don't want to have to clean out anymore solids from the rest of the fuel system. Anyway, here are a few pics. I believe it's a '66

Looks like the original black bomber. That tank was used until 68 I think...should have a 4 speed tranny. In 69 they got a 5 speed and a different styled tank. Looks like a good bike to start with! Good luck!

Yeah, this is my favorite project so far. And I'm surprised at how well it's coming along after sitting that long. So far every problem's been fuel related and that's easy shit

just make sure you confirm the year and if it is said black bomber do not do anything but restore it or you are throwing money away. They are worth quite a bit in stock configuration. you can always sell it and cafe something of less worth.

I might just throw money away just to make you twitchy :p

Jesus, a Bomber. Keep it stock or I will go Liam Neeson on you. I have a particular set of skills, I will find you…

Alright. It's been settled. It's definitely not staying stock
