 Wow! I heard reports on the news of Toyotas with pedal fixes but that still experienced acceleration problems.

Bunny Huggers and their plastic cars...its probably totaled now.

I keep hearing that you should shift into NEUTRAL and turn the car OFF.

oh man, toyota is sunk with this bad press. I dont know how they are going to recover. I guess Audi had a similar prob in the 80's but i dont think nearly as widespread as this.

All i hear is Jeremy Clarksons Voice from Top Gear and how he rags on the Prius'. He makes some great points and now more than ever. Seems also like a bad sci-fi movie, when computers attack. Though Toyota vehemently denies the computers responsability, Im not so sure.

I prefer buying an old car, to truely re-cycle anyway. Though these new models like the new Mitsu Evo or Mitsu Lancer Sportbac. Also saw my first Honda Accord Crosstour on the road today. Pretty sweet vehicle....Sometimes I'm glad I dont have that kind of money to spend on a car.

I guess the problem is that the Prius has a push button start and the shifter is just a joystick that is not mechanically linked to the transmission. Once the computor takes over your only option is to stand on the brakes.
The Machines are taking over! This makes me wonder about new sportbikes with electronic throttles.

Seriously, narconethree? Did you read the post above? The Dude on the highway incident burned up his brakes and could not shift into neutral.

well that's all great in a car which is functioning correctly, however both of those inputs (shifter and the main power button) run thru the ECU...there's no cable to the transmission ensuring actuation, nor is there a big contactor or relay or anything of the sort that would cut power. The ECU recieves input from these switches...that's all they are...and then does whatever the instruction set says it's supposed to.

if it's working correctly.....

If the ECU is NOT functioning properly and chooses to ignore these inputs then you're back in trouble with a car that won't shut down and can't be put into neutral.

I scream and sprint when I'm in a cross walk and a Toyota is approaching. Only a few people so far knew what I was doing. These old folks in a Prius were cracking up the other day. haha

That just proves that particular automobile was functioning properly at the time of recording. Not a good example, I'm afraid.

There is an overide installed on the car that would have cut the power if he was doing what he said he was.. he wasnt slamming the brakes it was like he was riding them...thats why they were burned. Its like driving around with your ebrake on. Hold the start button for 2 seconds and the car shuts off also.

I didn't know that. The CHiPs officer said the driver was freaked out. Panic mode, I assume? Still, a car shouldn't accelerate on its own. As someone who's totaled several cars in his life, I still wouldn't wish a crash on anyone.

What override is that...the one that's monitored adn actuated by the.....ecu?
Power button runs thru the ecu as well.....no worky

If in fact the ECu went bad....which it didnt because in a Toyota if the ecu goes or gets disupted the car goes into "limp" mode anyway. The overide is set up so that if the gas is stuck in a full open position by slamming, not merely pushing, the gas and break at the same time then the motor will shut completely down. Much like if you are in a vehicle with traction control stuck in snow spinning the tires. Simply put people are still driving cars like they are mid eighties malaise mobiles and they dont understand the safety features and inner workings of their vehicles technology. If you dont take the time to learn how the 3200 pound moving piece of steel you are riding in works then there are consequences. Same as if I dont read the way a band saw works and slice my finger off. You purchased it learn how it works. Maybe we should only build cars in manual transmission so more people are forced to pay attention to whats going on. Just a rant....

All hail the mighty ECU....it can't fail..........that wouldn't happen.........not to us........not to a toyota......
oh no.....never in the bajillion years.....

::)

Mom's 08 doesn't seem to have that fucking override and when it decided it was time to ignore the throttle input altogether whilst maintaining a steady 58mph, there wasn't much she could do about it. Luckily she wasn't hurt and that hunk of shit is no longer in her driveway. Our experience is first hand...what's yours?

First off the overide is part of the recall. My last 3 cars were Toyota's. My current is not because I wanted something with boost. My in laws drive one and both my parents have one and my wife is driving around in a brand new one. So I am going to go first hand. Not to mention I work around them all day every day. Second the ecu if it HAD failed would put the car in limp mode. Just read my previous post. Never said they dont fail.....said IF THEY DO.

I wondered what owners did with their (recalled) Toyotas? I mean, who would buy a used one now? How did your mom get rid of it? Just curious...
