Well i tried to use pine sol to dip my carbs, and well, im not sure if i left them in there too long or what, but for som reason a layer of dry pine sol or calcium has stuck to the carbs. I've already tried dipping them in berrymans but that hasnt gotten everything. Any tips on what to do?
It continues to amaze me how many people keep fucking up their carbs by soaking them in some sort of household chemical. Things like boiling them in lemon juice or PineSol, or whatever. What is wrong with using carburetor cleaner, fer fuck sake?!
That white stuff all over your carbs is not "calcium." It is aluminum oxide corrosion from being exposed to a caustic chemical. The only thing you can do now is soda blast or bead blast which will remove the surface layer down to clean, raw aluminum. You may STILL have long term problems with returning corrosion because the caustic chemical that you used will have penetrated pores of the base metal and will continue to cause corrosion in the future. You can try soaking in vinegar to neutralize the remaining residue embedded in the castings.
Well i made a shitty mistake. I knew i should have just done carb dip but i was interested to see if the pine sol would actually work, guess not.
As long as im going to blast them, could i powdercoat the carb bodys? I know I would have to tape up the bowl area and the insides, but how would they handle to heat? Im not a powder coater by any means so im just interested.
Ok, thanks. Im also going to blast them myself. Should i be careful of anything? Can i blast inside the bores or will that mess something up? How about the float bowl?
DO NOT BLAST THE INSIDE..... I REPEAT DO NOT BLAST THE INSIDE OF THE CARB....Carefully cover each end of the Carb and Put fuel Bowl On Carb ...You don't want any crap getting in there and blocking a passage way or Changing the integrity of the carb
Dunk them in 10% solution of white vinegar and water for 10~30 mins.
That will neutralise any remaining alkaline residue
Wash with ordinary tap water and use hot air gun to dry them
Problem with ANY dunk solution and CV carbs, (plus some slide carbs) there are seals on throttle shafts, the bit you see looks good but you don't know what damage you've caused to the bit's you can't see (and didn't check because you didn't know about)
Having done the lemon juice thing, I will say it did okay but it's not even comparable to a quick soda blast and its a lot more work.
Soda blast the whole damn thing, inside and out. Then blow it out with compressed air, and then put them in a bucket of hot water for a few minutes, then rinse them once more in moving water and they will be as good as new.
Sonreir, Is that an optical illusion that makes the two springs shown in your pic appear to be two different length's? ??? One spring looks longer than the other........
Soda isn't abrasive enough to mar the aluminum, it only takes shit off the surface. Essentially it only cleans and doesn't hurt the metal.
If you used sand, or aluminum oxide, or diamond black etc you'd screw your carbs pretty quickly.
Ok, thanks! From what im hearing i can blast the whole thing, but have to use soda or media. Not sand or something like that? I have a friend who powder coats so ill have to see what he has to blast em with. In the long run this might have been better, i get better looking carbs! ;D
