GS450-rear mudguard opinions and advice

Re: gs 450 "Red Headed Step Child"-progress

Here ya go gk. http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=7970.0. This is awesome

Re: gs 450 "Red Headed Step Child"-progress

There have been a number of different ways some guys have mounted them on the GS bikes. On mine I had made up some plates for adapters and found a set of GSXR 1000 rearsets off eBay to use. I am not happy with the final set up on them so they are not quite finished they were just rough mockup so I could get an idea of the feel. I am probably going to weld some brackets on the frame when I do the full tear down this winter.

Another build I found the guy used the same rearsets and bolted them directly to the frame

this is a link to his build on pnw riders:

If you are looking for other GS inspiration I would suggest checking out thegsresources.com they have a ton of bikes on there and several have aftermarket rearsets.

Re: gs 450 "Red Headed Step Child"-progress

I don't have a build thread gk. Just posted a couple pics today for the first time. Read through yours and I had the same problem with my intake. Gs air boxes SUCK. I bought k&n's and a dynojet stage 3 for a Katana to get the bitch runnin. Also agreed about the folks at GS Resources. If it aint stock then they don't wanna hear about it. Don't get me wrong, I have had very helpful advice over there but what a condescending group. some really need to get over themselves. btw Z-1 is great. They are super fast and very helpful. Bike lookin good dude. This is where I'm at now and my "cave"

Re: gs 450 "Red Headed Step Child"-seat and light mock up

A few shots of the seat and light mock up. Decided n the 2" Lossa styled rather than the 2 1/2" light I had. The 2" inch is a LED with 13 LED lights. Fairly bright with the brakes applied.

A few of the light. Not sure if the difference between running and brake light is enough.

With brake with a little help/ Sorry about more crap phone pics.

Re: gs 450 "Red Headed Step Child"-progress

I worried about the same thing on my GR (even though my tail light is a DOT light from another bike), so I installed a license plate frame with an led tail / brake light. The plate frame is only wired to run the brake light though.

The tank and seat look good btw!

Re: gs 450 "Red Headed Step Child"-progress

Thanks Rich. Yeah when it's all said and done a led light frame may be the way to go. It wouldn't really take away from the overall look while still being an extra bit of piece of mind. Last thing anyone wants is a cager to run up the back end.

Re: gs 450 "Red Headed Step Child"-ready for 2K

Decided that I was not thilled with the color. Layed up another darker metallic and the color blend is much better. Got the accent striping layed out and ready for clear. I have two emblem sets coming and I am undecided which set i want to go with As usual opinions appreciated.

Re: gs 450 "Red Headed Step Child"-progress

I am really digging your stripes! 8)
I would say the first set of emblems, the modern tank would clash with the vintage emblems.

Re: gs 450 "Red Headed Step Child"-progress

That's a gorgeous paint scheme

Re: GS 450 "Red Headed Step Child"-progress

Thanks for the positive comments! I can't wait to see it all with the clear layed down. This is a first time attempt at anything better than a rattlecan flat black on my past bikes.

Re: gs 450 "Red Headed Step Child"-progress

GS450!! I just started a build thread of my 450. I really dig the way yours is going very cool.

Thanks for the input guys! Still waiting on the seat from RCC to match up so I have time to ponder.

While staring at the bike today I was thinking of rearsets. I popped my but on and was playing with positioning (no I wasn't making vroom vroom noises yet..LOL). What have other GS'ers done? I really don't want to shell out for a full set of universals, yet finding any takeoffs that would work has been a gigantic fail.

Opinions:

I am pondering using the existing mounts off of my GS to fabricate rear sets. I would like to use the rearmost mount to attach a peg. If i do that I would have to go with option 1. option two would be to drill the mounting holes slightly back from the origional mount triangle and use or fabricate some sort of universal rearsets with linkages.

option 1:

Affix a peg mount to the rear bolt location (not the end hole passenger peg mount. This would move the peg up about two inches and back 6=7". From a crude mock stance minus my seat this is a very comfortable position. I would be able to use the shifter in a GP configuration from this point on the shifter side. On the brake side I would have to cut the brake level shorter, grind a small flat spot and affix a bolt on toe plate. I am worried if there would be sufficient leverage on the brake side?????

option 2:

option two would be to drill the mounting holes slightly back from the origional mount triangle and use or fabricate some sort of universal rearsets with linkages.

Need everones experianced thoughts good or bad.

Gary, If those large plates are symmetrical, send me one of them if you can without issue. Or remove one take some pics and get the best dimension you can on the center to center distance of the holes closest to eh brake pivot. I cam design up a mount that will bolt there, and run towards the rear a few inches. Than supply a spacer for the motor mount joint, and you can remove those plates altogether.

Re: gs 450 "Red Headed Step Child"-progress

Thanks Rocker!

If I can't come up with easy solution I may just do that Kris. I'll give you a heads up if I end up doing the easy way..LOL I appreciate the offer.

Re: gs 450 "Red Headed Step Child"-2k clear applied

All in all a learning experiance with the paint and clear. A few pictures below. Seat ended up far from perfect but i am happy with it for a first attempt. ictures are in the shade and has not been wet sanded or buffed.

Re: gs 450 "Red Headed Step Child"-progress

Time for a seat pad and to figure out linkages and pivot arms. The positioning of the rearsets seems comfortable, is under me between butt and balls as described, but requires some spacers to move them out slightly. Any opinions on this location? seems natural and i can clamp seat and remove hands from the bars as described in posts I've read.

Also have a couple of finished paint pictures. A learning experiance and not yet wet sanded and buffed. Only One or two minor debris marks that need a light sand. Very little orange peel with the 2K and no visable runs. This clear coat is a miricle worker as described.

As always opinions positive or negative appreciated. Getting Late in the year and trying to button up a few last magor things. Much polishing and more minor changes to come over the winter.

Excuse the pics with my ugle mug, only way to do positioning pics.. :p
