GS450-rear mudguard opinions and advice

Re: gs 450 "Red"-paint and rearset experts wanted page 12

Was wondering if you got rearsets yet? If so, how did you mount them? Just bought a set from monstercraftsman and may use org peg bracket

Re: gs 450 "Red"-paint and rearset experts wanted page 12

I purchased a set from Kris Durgam K on here. they are supper nice and smooth. I dropped the swing arm today and removed the origional brackets. I will be using them for the mounts with a 1/4" spacer on the bolt.

I mocked them at the origional rear peg location and they felt comfortable (I'm 6') however after playing with some linkage ideas I have decided to move them up about half way between the origional bolts and the rear peg location. I will have to grind out a smooth surface from the support rib on the backside to achieve this.

If all goes well and I get a halfway decent day i will at least have the mounts finished this weekend. I also have a nice 1/2" piece of aluminum from work that I could cut some mounts out of if I decide that going that direction would look nicer.

Only issue with that is finding or fabbing spacers for the swing arm pivot

Alot of grinding but the rearsets are mounted. Now to figure out how to run the breal linkage, or fab a new brake arm that is more out of the way.

Re: gs 450 "Red"-paint and rearset experts wanted page 12

Gary, have you seen my brake setup on the GR? I was able to use the original brake lever flipped straight up. just had to drill a hole for the linkage in the original.

Re: gs 450 "Red"-paint and rearset experts wanted page 12

Rich,
That is exactly what I was looking to do. However it looks like the GS brake lever is rounder, more bulbous, and angles out a little more. Did you have to grind yours down any to flatten it and get it tucked out of the way more?

I'm not 100% sure what you mean - sorry. I can take a couple pics tomorrow if you'd like though.

Re: gs 450 "Red"-paint and rearset experts wanted page 12

Lots of good ideas on this build. Makes me regret throwing my L frame in the metal recycling dumpster.

Like how you relocated the battery and moved the electronics away.

Did the E tank stlide into the front mounts or did you have to relocate them back some?

The one thing I would change is that 16in rear wheel. I got an identical 17in rear wheel if you want to buy it.

Nice work!

Re: gs 450 "Red"-paint and rearset experts wanted page 12

I may be interested in the 17". The 16 will work for now but I am not super keen on the smaller rear either. Does the 17have all the brake hardware? or is the brake hardware for the drum an easy swap over? I know very little on the drum and am just working it out little by little. I would like to find a dual set of 17" or 18" wires or mags for a direct swap. Not 100percent sure of all the information required to do this. Only swap I have heard of for sure would be from a 450T or 400.

The newer E tank does fit the stock mounts in the front. The rear mounts had to be changed slightly dince they were vertical mounts on the tank compared to the L's horizontal mounts. I decided I wanted the tank farther forward. It is moved forward about 3" and down about 1 1/2"

I got the L for a song. Wouldn't have been my first chice but it is growing on me. I think it is starting to come together pretty well. other than the mags )especially the 16") it is slowly losing all of the cruser look. Thanks for the compliments.

It is a direct fit. I know I have GS-T wheels on my GS-E

jfMAN- Where are you located? Pm me a price with shipping to zip 45241. Do you have a front to match?

Rich- I am afraid to shim out my rearsets any further. The brake lever on mine is round not oval or flat. Angles outsligtly, from the pivot then angles steadily out from there. The pedal clears the pivot but it puts the linkage farther out over the toe than I would prefer. Some pictures would be great along with close up side and a rear view of the linkage if possible.

Re: gs 450 "Red"-paint and rearset experts wanted page 12

I am in Canada and Shipping is over 70$ a wheel. ::)

But my sister lives in Georgia and in decembre I have to go there in a car. I got 3 sets of GS wheels I have to sell so I will bring them to her so I can sell them in the US.

That style wheel I only have a rear 17in and a front 19in wheel.

I also have some 18's with slant spokes that I can sell.

Sorry for the tease but let me know later I may be able to ship for a reasonnable price.

Gary, I got caught up with stuff before leaving for work. But I'll make sure you get those pics.

No problem Rich. I hate how life gets in the way of the important hobbies..LOL No rush and thanks again!

Alright,
Been colder than you know what here so the time outside working on the bike has been slow.

Got my new tank emblems installed since the others started peeling..

I have the rearsets mounted and am just working on the linkage. (I would like to use clevis ends instead of the heim type I received with the kit, does anyone know a cheap place to pick them up?).

Spent the afternoon tinkering with synching the carbs (I think I have them right, time will tell when the engine cools)

TO DO LIST:
*Finish battery mount and tray
*Fab up license plate bracket
*Fab up seat cushion
*Still want to change out gauges and ignition mounts.
*install new grips
*wrap headers
*decide on final wheel selection over the winter and paint, clean, mount
*lots of polishing to clean up the old faded clear coat covered engine parts and fork lowers
*shorten or purchase new cables. Cables work but are a tad unsightly for my tastes/
*Clean up handlebars further where possible
*install steering damper

Please excuse the dirty bike. The carport has not been my friend in keeping it clean this week.

*And other tidbits as they come up, or as opinions suggestions roll in.

Re: GS450 "Red"- plug chop whes and rearsets installed

Spent one of the two nice days tinkering with the bike. One picture is a plug chop i did today. Running 122.5 and previously was under the impression i would need to jet richer. I pulled the plugs today and found a dark soot covered plug. Unless i am way off base that means I am running rich. I have some 120 mains. the origional jets were 115. I do however get a little stumble pulling from a stop sign right off idle. I am getting to my wits end with this. If anyone has ideas I would love to hear them. I am new to the cv carb game and am learning as I go.

Re: GS450 "Red"-A little progress pg13

On a happier not the rearsets and linkage are installed. Thanks rich for the pics and info!

Shift side works perfect:

Brake side seems to have a little to much throw and i can not lock it up. good feathering but not firm enough feel:

If I am not mistaken I need to redrill down the lever shaft to get the turn radius more in line yo the pedal movement?

Re: GS450 "Red"-A little progress pg13

That's correct...if the pivot on your brake is shorter, you will have a firmer pedal. Ever notive how the rear brake arm is longer than the front torque arm in the stock setup? It's a leverage issue. On the all thread like you have on the shifter, I always put a piece of fuel line over the unused part. Makes a nice clean looking rod to cover up the threads. Looking good!

Re: GS450 "Red"-A little progress pg13

Thanks Kiley! Any compliment from builders like you and some of the others warms my heart and makes me think I minght be on the right path agter all. You, Big Rich and so many others have been the inspiration for those slow moving project. every time I look at one of your rides I find some other small detail that just blows my mind.

I never thought of using a 5/16 fuel line to sleave the all thread. I will be looking for something that will fit. That is a perfect idea and solution, and will make a much cleaner look.

Now if I could just figure out my jetting stuble so I could get a few moe short rides in before this Ohio weather kicks my outdoor building into nuetral again... LOL
