Hello all.

Been a while. Just when I think I'm back in the thick of things, life gets in the way. I'm sure you're all familiar with this. Well, if nothing else, we keep on trucking.

The bike I built is slowly coming back together. The bike is being modified for a return run back at Bonneville in August 2013. The changes are significant. I'm in the process of taking the mostly stock CB450N engine and changing it over to allow for some nitrous (more for its cooling properties than for power) and a turbo. The stock compression ratio is sitting at 9.3:1 and I intend to get it down to around 6:1. Pin, weld and balancing of the crank is a must. JE pistons, a stand alone fuel injection system (likely from Mega Squirt) and some custom machining should make for some interesting numbers. The way I see it, it's going to go one of two ways; fast or explosive. Either way I'll leave my mark. Pun intended.

Here's some recent engine pics.

Hope everyone is doing well.

whoa! sounds awesome man. It strikes me that 6-1 seems pretty low even for a turbo set up, but then I really dont know much about that sort of thing. Im sure you've done your math.

Huh, this should be interesting. I love how simple these engines are to work on, so I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with it.

First time I've seen this bike, damnit... here goes another day of work spent reading up on some sick build.

You have a thread up on your last trip to the flats?

I definitely agree. Most turbo builds aiming for very high boost (closer to 2 bar) will go as low as 8:1 and I think that's even a bit low. No reason to run such low compression when high octane fuels and timing adjustments are much better options...

Thanks. Yeah, I'm getting mixed views on the CR. My biggest issue is the lack of after market parts for this particular engine. I want to find a nice balance without risking the engine blowing up while I'm on it. I was looking at a stock CX650 and the CR is 7.8:1 so I guess I should aim for roughly the same. Not sure how this translates from a four banger to a twin.

Cheers

Thanks pal. Should be good for shits n giggles.

Good to have you guys along for the ride.

Nice to see you again there Mr. Maritime. Been a while.

Theres a few things in here. If you look up Bums to Bonneville. Just some crappy low budget attempts at documenting our first trip. Cheers pal.

CX650 is a twin. It is a guzzi Style tansposed v twin with a Turbo. Bored out CX500.

Cheers,

If you don't have one already, get yourself a wideband O2 sensor. It is, quite literally, a MUST have tool for a build like this.

Also... people reduce compression ratios because they're overly cautious and eventually end up with a sub-par engine. There are much better ways of controlling chamber temps than dialing down the compression ratio. I would view 8:1 as an absolute minimum for ANY (four stroke engine and 9:1 as a minimum for anything with even a little performance in mind.

There are many tricks you can try that will keep temps in check and not cause such a reduction in performance.

Ah. Cool. Thanks buddy. I thought it was a four banger. Slowly making headway. I think.

pretty much hit the nail on the head. I am being cautious. Probably too cautious. Ive been looking at the amount of time I have left and I don't think I'm going to get everything ready for Bonneville in time so I've decided to do this all in stages. the head is getting completely redone which has proven difficult since Honda no longer makes certain parts for this engine. I'm going to keep the pistons stock CR for now and concentrate on switching it over to fuel injection and nitrous. Once thats done and the engine behaves reasonably well in 13, I'll add the turbo charger. A good friend of mine found a killer, stand alone system from a company called Aerocharger. The unit is going to set me back around 2000. Its a bit steep but the fact that it's stand alone means that I dont have to worry about adding an inter cooler or tapping oil lines.

Should have pics of the rebuild head in a week or so.

Thanks all for the input.

Signing up to this should be interesting to see.
