Kick-Start only - new wrencher

71 CL 350 Cafe
I've been searching around to find some help on the actual process of making my 71 CL350 kick-start only. This is my first bike and I chose a 350 specifically to learn how to wrench for myself. I know very little at this point but I have the manual and I am a quick learner, but I seriously lack any knowledge of electrical systems. Are there any threads that outline the process of removing the electrical start components?

I also ordered a new rectifier from Oregon Motorcycles, so what else to I need or need to do to address the issue of battery drain?

remove starter, plug hole....plenty of threads on it man, just search some keywords.

I started by draining the oil and removing the starter, starter chain, started clutch and a couple gears. When it came time for the internals, I had the help of a friend. Finally, plug the hole and fill her back up with fresh oil.

Seek and you shall find on the Ton. Use the search function, it's my favorite tool of all. ;)

use search...

as far as electrical stuff, its easy. just pull the starter, disconnect any wires that go to it. look at the clymers electrics manual and disconnect anything else it doesnt require.

Are you removing the starter for simplicity / lightness or or you removing it in an attept to cure a poorly charging system? If it's the latter, you will be better off fixing the charging system as the starter should not cause your battery to drain (except at start time, of course).

I am removing it purely for weight reduction and cause its unnecessary

Ya man. Its an insanely simple process. Its all been layed out for ya here already. As far as a plug, you can spend for the machined billlet or brass plugs out there, or hit up your local auto parts store and grab an engine expansion plug for around $3. Cant remember the exact size you'll need, but if your working on a bike you should have a micrometer... Good luck man.

Otherwise known as a "Freeze Plug" for the laymans term... The zit faced punk behind the counter at the Autoparts store may give you that all too common blank stare if you say "engine expansion plug".
:D :D :D

Thanks guys - really appreciate the help. I've found in other forums everyone expects you to be an expert and talk down to anyone asking "simple" questions. How the hell are you supposed to learn - no one else in family or friends for that matter are mechanically inclined so i'm learning on my own. I understand and utilize the search function on the site and I always do so prior to posting - I simply found the threads I read through to be rather vague - especially for someone without a lot of experience. Thanks a lot for taking the time to help me out!

Anytime smithk4. Thats why we are all here. To help eachother out and keep these old beasts on the road and out of the scrap yard.

I removed mine on the same bike. It's as easy as everyone said. I ended up buying a block off plate from the link below.

I also removed the clutch and gear from the rotor.

Oh man, I hear ya there. I'm the only mechanicaly inclined person in my family as well, and I dont know a single biker. EVERYTHING I know has been from this board and my owner's manual. I really owe alot to the guys at DTT.

Never be afraid to ask questions....

It does help if you make a build thread though, that way everyone can see the help they give you go to good use. Makes everyone that helps a part of the project. Ya dig?

Not a problem man. Mine's about ready to fire up and hit the road. Feel free to ask me anything you want. My mistakes can be learned for both of us. ;D

damn those plugs are cheap... if only it didnt say MG...

get an impact driver... the clutch hub weighs a good bit on the crank. also you need a flywheel puller...

you can find them at Z1 enterprises.

A bench grinder will take care of that MG :). They have those pullers at Bore-Tech too.

picked up an impact driver this afternoon - $24 @ sears

Those things are great. Sears is great. I bought one a few months back, took it home, opened it up and it was used & broken! I returned it and they swapped, no questions asked. Sears is fantastic. I go Craftsman whenever I can.
