Krazy Katana

Tab washer... mind enlightening me? I just removed the 6mm bolt with washer off the end. Didn't read anything about a tab washer in the Clymer and don't see anything staring me in the face.

Splined washer under nut, it will only come about half way up nut when bent into place so is real easy to overlook

Unless you cleaned all the grease and dirt off it's probably 'invisible' ;D
even a real thin layer makes it disappear

Cleaned it up and there's definitely not a washer there. Tried heating the nut, it was hot enough that my spit boiled on it, and still nothing

Still can't get the bastard off, going to see if I can get a cordless impact driver from the school shop and if not then I'm taking it in somewhere to see if I can get it taken off for a few bucks.
On a happier note, bought a 3' strip of aluminum to make clamps for the gauges. Also snagged the broken rear fender bit from a CM250 to take another stab at a mini-fairing.

Let it soak in liquid wrench (again) and tried the cordless impact driver, nothing happened. Would using an air powered one make a significant difference?

Darn. Had a feeling that I'd need an air wrench. I'll try to get it (back) in the truck and head over to the shop on friday, or saturday at the latest.

My air wrench will do around 350ft/lbs @110psi but recommended pressure is 90psi ;D
Still had plenty of things it can't unscrew though (and quite a few that just 'fell apart in my hand ' ;) )

Well, it looks like air was the answer . Took it in to the local shop and they got it off. Everything went smooth as far as getting the chain on and set up, also the PO did a 520 conversion apparently, and I counted 16 teeth on the front, so my gear ratio is actually changing a good bit from what he had on there.

Probably fitted a SV650 set, they were real cheap a few years ago. (I was given a set of SV650 sprockets)
I haven't used them as the 16t front will be way too tall gearing (unless you do a 750/1100 conversion)
With 14t bike is still geared for about 140mph

that explains why the front was a 16T ::)
So going back to the 14/46 will give me more top speed then right?
Update: Went for a shakedown, bike was reluctant to start but after some time playing with choke and a couple squirts of starter fluid I got it running. Rode around, pulls well but is definitely off. Put some water on a shop towel and touched headers, 2&3 were hot, 1&4 were warm. Checked for spark on 2 & 4 (one from each coil) and there is spark but 4 seems a little weaker. I cleaned the connectors for the 2-3 coil since some oil got on it, will do the same for 1-4 and see if it improves how it runs. Sounded like I might have a wee exhaust leak, re-tightening exhaust bolts should fix that. Figure they loosened a bit after first heat cycle.

Yep, should be faster as it can now rev to a place where it makes power. Pretty sure 6th gear would be way slower than 5th with the 16t sprocket (maybe even 4th gear would be 'faster'?)

You lost me on the second half of that, mind explaining? If I'm thinking about it correctly then bumping up the gearing (3.06 to 3.29) will make it accelerate a bit slower but have a higher top speed and lower cruising rpms, right?

Did more riding today, and noticed a few strange things.
  • Tachometer was bouncing around (sometimes up to 3k rpm off) when I was cruising on the highway.
  • Noticed a bit of a high pitched sound when moving under engine power, couldn't hear on highway cuz of wind noise. Looked over the engine while "idling" and didn't notice any strange sounds or signs of new oil leaks. At worst, the tubes on the front of the engine might be weeping a tiny bit.
  • "Idle" is being really funky. Before it just needed to be around 3k rpm and it would stay there steady, revs would rise as the bike warmed up but turning the idle adjuster always was able to bring it back to a steady 3k. Now, even around 3k the bike will try to sputter off, and with a little bit of gas it'll try to climb up to at least 4k. I'm assuming this is the product of an air leak somewhere, will check by spraying WD40 around to see if anything happens to the revs. I think I might need to pull the carbs and re-clean them to make sure the problem isn't there, since I remember PJ saying that 3k is off the pilots and on to the needle/main. Looking in to getting a new rack of carbs, since the throttle cable mount on mine is busted and one of the brass hoses on the #3 carb was placed in what I think to be a different hole than stock using two pieces of hose. Will try to check in to that, andoor do you mind posting a pic of your #3 carb if you get a chance?
Update: Sprayed intake boots and boots to airbox with some WD40 and didn't notice any fluctuation in the revs outside of the normal slight movement. Guess next step is to pull and clean them again. Bike still runs great when you're using the throttle, just does not want to idle consistently or at the right rpms.
Thats the stuff I noticed from the ride today. Also need to get a new axle adjuster, one of them looks to have a different bolt welded in than the stock one, and I can't get it to hold the axle in the new tighter position due to the new chain. The axle is holding in place, but I really don't like that the adjuster plate isn't securely clamping the swinger. Played with it for a minute and went for another ride, seems to be holding in place. Had to get the axle tightened up a bit more, seems like it just needed that. Realized that the bolt isn't necessarily what holds it in place, just locates it within the groove of the swingarm. Damn this ghetto bike... By the time I replace everything it'll be new ::)
Also, working on version two of the rear fender fairing and gauge mounts. Will post pics once cutting has commenced :D

Got left semi-stranded on the bike for the first time tonight. I'll post the picture and you can guess what's wrong... Lets just say riding home in 1st was interesting.

That's the first time I've seen one of those break. Yu did have the linkage set for 90 degree angles?

Honestly, I can't remember. I believe I did, if not they were close. I'll make sure they are though with the new one.
