Aaaaand she starts. I don't think my choke/idle screw were operating correctly. A little tweaking, and it fired right up.

Definitely needs some tuning/tweaking. Doesn't want to run with the choke further than 1/4 turn off. Even when warm. Running too rich?

Too lean... choke is on, less air to = amount of fuel. More pilot screw "might" get it to idle. But with your filters and open head pipes, your jetted too lean Mr.

Good job man! Glad you kept @ it.

Thanks Graham! I will give the pilot screws a shot tonight.

Re: 79 KZ400 Cafe (Getting her running)

Give them another 1/2 a turn out. An make sure they are the same on both carbs.

Will do. They are currently 1 1/4 out from snug as per the manuals instruction.

Ok, take them to 2 turns out. You might end up as far a 2 1/4 -2 1/2 turns out before it will idle. Also, turn your idle up a bit. I can come over tomorrow morning and have a look if thats good for you?

Re: 79 KZ400 Cafe (Getting her running)

man, this bike is looking sick. I want one (and I havent even finished my current one...gotta love this hobby). Look on the bright side should be down hill from here with a lil tuning and tweaking and you'll be on the road in no time. Good luck to ya and great work

Thanks man. I am super excited! I am working on designing a new seat for it. The more I look at the huge bump on my current pan the less I like it. Just way to wide and long.

Ya tomorrow morning works. What time?

Also, I am afraid my idle screw is not operating right. It doesn't appear to make a difference when I tighten/loosen it. We can look at it tomorrow though.

haha... ok, see ya then!

Awesome.

Also, it should be noted that when choked completely it idles REALLY high. Only when I release the choke a small amount does it drop to a reasonable level. But past that point, it dies.

Re: 79 KZ400 Cafe (Getting her running)

I feel silly asking this but are you running the stock air box or pods? If you are running pods what is your jetting?

The stock cv carbs *HATE* running without the airbox,You can get them to run good they are picky to jet jetted right once you take it off and that is why I ended up going with some mikunis for pod filters and a little power boost.

I am running some K&N style filters.

What jetting are the carbs? Have you upped the main and pilot at all ? As a bike dying with choke off is, running lean and since the a/f screw isn't working at all I'd say the jets are off if you haven't messed with them.

Yes, there is a good chance it needs rejeting. I took the carbs apart last weekend and cleaned them out. When putting back together I just set the jets at "snug" since we didn't know how it would run. If we cannot fix the idle any other way I will pull them off and rejet.

Thanks for the input.

P.S. How much were those Chinese Mikumi's?

Re: 79 KZ400 Cafe (Getting her running)

I got the mikunis for 35 bucks each, and a CB175 throttle cable it worked out good.

Jetting is 25 pilot and 120 main, I believe is the jetting I have for them. (I'll have to check the main)

Re: 79 KZ400 Cafe (Getting her running)

You dont need new carbs... You just need to re-jet for pods and open headers. Im not saying that the mikuni's are not better. Just not needed. I've run Cv's with every combination of filter. And replacing your carbs in order to run cheap pod filters is not brilliant in my opinion. El' Macho Borracho ran cv carbs and velocity stacks. And ran great.

Re: 79 KZ400 Cafe (Getting her running)

The bike looks good man. Good luck on the jetting. Hope to see video of it riding soon.

Re: 79 KZ400 Cafe (Clutch and Tranny)

Well good news. I got the carbs dialed in thanks to new main jets, and some patience.

Bad news, transmission appears to not be shifting and clutch doesn't want to engage.

One minute, the tranny was shifting fine. Put the clutch cover back on, foot peg on, shift lever on, and it wouldn't shift anymore.

I am wondering if my clutch is actually stuck in the "engaged" position. The whole clutch set up is really strange and the rod which the clutch lever pushed in just slides out, which seams weird to me.

Guess I need to drain oil and take a look inside huh?
