Lazarus - 1975 Cl360 - STATUS: STOLEN

Re: Lazarus - 1975 Cl360 -(battery not charging. again.)

haven't gotten a chance to work on her for a while. hopefully tomorrow after work. no garage = no fun.

Re: Lazarus - 1975 Cl360 -(battery not charging. again.)

Just re-red what I posted couple of days ago.
Should have said 0.5 ohms (doh)
Because o the way stator is wound, you will get at least one low reading and two in the 0.5 to 2 ohm range
If you treat outputs as A, B, C, a-b, a-c, b-c, plus check any lead to ground (should be open, no continuity)

yeah everything checks out on that test test then. is it normal for the rectifier to have one low reading as well?

Re: Lazarus - 1975 Cl360 -(battery not charging. again.)

i checked the stator while the bike was running.
pink to yellow looked good.
pink to white looked good.
white to yellow didn't show any voltage. is that normal or no?

any help would be much appreciated guys!

Re: Lazarus - 1975 Cl360 -(HELP! battery not charging. again.)

If none of the leads are grounded and your getting at least 0.5 ohm resistance, you should get an output on every pair.
Did you check meter resistance? (lead to lead)
Mine shows about 0.2~0.3 ohms resistance in the test leads so I subtract that from readings
Do the ground test on K/ohm scale, (unless you have auto ranging meter?) should be open circuit

Re: Lazarus - 1975 Cl360 -(HELP! battery not charging. again.)

i did the ground test and it showed no continuity. i guess this means i need a new stator...

Re: Lazarus - 1975 Cl360 -(HELP! battery not charging. again.)

If ground test had shown continuity you would need a new stator.
I'll have to find a diagram of how stator is wired internally
What rpm did you test at? should be 5,000rpm and around 70 volts

Re: Lazarus - 1975 Cl360 -(HELP! battery not charging. again.)

i don't have a tach... but i would estimate that i hit 70 volts at around 5k rpm.

why no reading on the white to yellow wires if everything else is good?

thanks for all the help by the way, this bike is my first time working on any kind of motor vehicle and what i don't know could fill volumes.

Re: Lazarus - 1975 Cl360 -(HELP! battery not charging. again.)

You should get a reading on yellow to white or yellow to pink.
Either you had a bad connection or the stator is open internally (but, then you wouldn't get a resistance reading, or, you would get continuity to ground ???)
Re-check ohms readings on all 3 leads and re-check ground readings, you may have a grounding problem?
Sorry, that's all I can think of at present

Re: Lazarus - 1975 Cl360 -(HELP! battery not charging. again.)

checking for ground i was going from the stator wires to the negative battery terminal. is that what i should be doing?

Re: Lazarus - 1975 Cl360 -(HELP! battery not charging. again.)

That 'should' work but I would go direct to a mounting screw on stator (remove the generator cover, it's only 3 screws)
It may be worthwhile removing generator completely and look if there is any burning of insulation.
You can also check all the wires and make sure they are not broken, a common complaint after chain and sprockets were fitted was wiring trapped and cut through by sprocket cover/clutch operating mechanism

Re: Lazarus - 1975 Cl360 -(HELP! battery not charging. again.)

well i got a new rectifier from oregon motorcycle parts just to rule out the easy problem and because it's supposed to work better than the stock one. put that in. bike still doesn't charge. i'll have to swing by bent bike this weekend and see if i can find a new stator.

Re: Lazarus - 1975 Cl360 -(HELP! battery not charging. again.)

i'm thinking about just taking it to a shop. i didn't mention it but around the same time (a little before) as the battery charging issue started the bike also quit idling on one cylinder. i've adjusted the points and the valves, put in new intake boots and gaskets, made sure the carbs are clean... at this point i think i'd rather just pay someone to fix it so i can actually ride the damn thing.

Re: Lazarus - 1975 Cl360 -(HELP! battery not charging. again.)

To be honest, it may be your best option.
One thing though, check it's someone who actually understands PMS charging systems and early Honda in particular.
May need to locate a mom and pop shop although anyone with PMS system experience will be able to figure it out, will just take a little longer.
You shouldn't 'spend' more than an hour and half though, get a firm quote

Re: Lazarus - 1975 Cl360 -(HELP! battery not charging. again.)

yeah good advice. i've got a guy that works out of his garage that works on old bikes and scooters who i've gone to before. the honda dealership in town wouldn't even work on bikes as old as mine.

oh and what does PMS (in this context jokers) stand for? points magneto system?

Re: Lazarus - 1975 Cl360 -(HELP! battery not charging. again.)

Permanent Magnet System
Honda dealer HAS to work on it if you ask, they can loose dealership if they refuse, contact American Honda for details

huh, that's interesting. i'd never do that as i'm not going to force somebody to work on my bike that doesn't want to especially under threat of losing their job. i imagine the work quality might not be the best in that case.

Re: Lazarus - 1975 Cl360 -(HELP! battery not charging. again.)

Did you end up finding the fault in the electronics yet? Curious as I'll be headed down the same road this weekend to sort mine out.

Re: Lazarus - 1975 Cl360 -(HELP! battery not charging. again.)

not yet, i've got a stator on order, i'll throw that in and if it doesn't work i'm taking it to a shop. i'll post after i put the stator in.

Re: Lazarus - 1975 Cl360 -(HELP! battery not charging. again.)

I love this build. I have the same model. but just had a baby so its on hold. can’t wait to see the finish. hope you dont mind if i steal some ideas. props to you.
