2001 Chevy S-10 4X4 4DR 4.3l Vortec Auto. Was originally the wife's vehicle (hard to call it a truck with that small of a bed). 139k miles now and used for hauling trash, pulling the bike trailer, and my transportation in bad weather when the wife has the Equinox. Have had to replace rotor and cap twice, but otherwise pretty good vehicle - AC works as long as I keep it charged, and 4x4 works if squirels haven't eaten the vacuum lines off.
1989-1999.5 full size gm trucks, and the s10 of the same era (dont know what year they went to) are some of the most reliable trucks built. Easy to work on, dead reliable, and somewhat comfortable. Good bang for the buck
I think its in here a few pages back, but I had a 1998 s10 2wd long bed with the 4.3 and auto. It had north of 200k on the clock, and besides an intake manifold gasket, the only thing I ever did was distributor caps. It was eating one every 5000 miles or so. I know it had worn out bearings in the distributor causing the issue, but I had a line on unlimited free caps as my buddy is a forklift mechanic. Most of the hyster trucks they service run the 4.3. The caps wouldn't even be barely worn, but they would change them out as part of the p.m. schedule and they just got thrown away.
That old girl was a sweet heart, 3 separate bike related trips (meltdown show in North Carolina, Barber Vintage fest in Bama and One trip to ride in Georgia) which were all over 1000 miles round trip, it ate the cap button within 20 miles of being home and gave me fits. She was good to me, that's for sure.
Levi's right for sure. Over the years I owned four of the various Chev/GMC S-10 class vehicles. one has the 2.2L four banger that was completely gutless but the others all had that 4.3 and were always stone cold reliable. One of them had over 200K miles when I rolled it over after encountering some black ice. With the exception of the battery, oil, plugs, and filters everything on it was completely original, even the clutch. The '97 I had was ordered from the factory and took me all over the lower-48. It had rolled up 147k when I traded it in and two other owners here in town had it for many years before the body had too much rust. By that time it had over 250k and also was completely original including the clutch. Many of the mechanical and suspension parts on these were interchangeable with the Camaro/Firebird vehicles of the era.
I had a 98 with the 4.3L Vortec. Hands down, it's one of the best engines GM ever designed. That truck moved us back and forth to Philadelphia and took the wife and me on many adventures.
still thinking about it. I want to but don't need to. Though, if a deal hadn't come along on my current ride, id likely still be driving that thing. I still see it in town about once a week. The guy I sold it to bought it for his daughter. It makes me feel like a stalker, but I know that shes had about 3 jobs since owning it. First I saw it sitting at the burger king all the time, then McDonalds, now at the shoe place by the Rural King I frequent haha
Well, I did have to replace some suspension components (expected) and the differential propeller shaft seal (a lot easier than I expected). The hardest job I've had on it was replacing ~30 ft of vacuum tubing. ALL of it was eaten by either mice, squirrels, or chipmunks. It still has a flaky gas gauge that reads ~50% the time but the fuel pump hasn't given up yet. I'm not really a fan of pickup driving, but I took it a little over 100 miles last weekend to my hometown for a cousin's funeral (wife had other trips for the Equinox) and it ran and drove fine. Just can't haul much in the tiny bed due to the 4 door.
This is my first vehicle ever I had.
1999 GMC Sierra, 5.7 vortec v8. Some dude turned into me and the trailer I was pulling which knocked the trailer into a light pole (bent it in half) and made the rear tires of the truck rise up then slam back down destroying the rear wheels.
Insurance totaled it, even though the bed side needed to be replaced so I bought it back from insurance for $450. Put a new bedside on, had it fully repainted by my dads buddy and put some new wheels on it. This is the day I got it back from paint and the tire shop. Still got this thing, 275,000 miles and 0 issues other than regular maintenance.
