Moving the ignition key...Where are you guys putting them?

Okay fellas, I am thinking of moving my ignition key. Where are you guys mounting your keys? Photos would be helpful.

I have yet to assemble mine, but my plan is to fab a battery box with an ignition switch built into it. Saw it on a brat at a local meet a bit ago and thought it was cool. This box has yet to exist for me so I have no pics...yet.

I'm with Flug - I had mine under my seat for a season, but moved it back to the original spot to utilize the factory steering lock.

Not sure how practical it is in application, but it looks really cool on the side on the headlight.

I think the stock position on the side of the bike is kinda cool / retro but I always got nervous putting my hands down by the headers. My first bike had it in the instrument panel so I guess I got used to it.

I'm keyless. Pushbutton on/off and pushbutton starter button mounted and camoflauged into custom sidecover.

You can ditch the whole lock cylinder and switch and use an RFID kit off ebay in conjunction with a solid state relay. Ive done it on two bikes. Costs about 30 bucks and you swipe a key fob to turn the ignition on. No chance of hot wiring since you can put the guts under the gas tank or wherever, leaving no exposed wires.

Stock on a little Honda single (100/125) is on the left side under tank. I flipped mine to the right. It seemed more natural right sided. The other ideas of keyless and buttons are cool, but I like feel of turning a key. It's part of the "starting ritual". Old skool. I'm not a fan of all the keyless tech on new cars either.

On the side of the side cover, right next to the top of the kick starter. I like the location, but just broke down the bike for tab removal and coating. Don't think I'm going to reuse the side covers so I'll have to find another location.

$30? Point us in the right direction, kemosabe.

You need:

1 DEI 611T Solid state relay, like this one:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/DEI-611T-12-VOLT-ACTIVE-LATCHING-SWITCH-RELAY-TIMER-/140333447156

1 RFID reader, like this one:

Once you have those and have a basic understanding of wiring, you can use it for your ignition. I use mine to latch a HD 40amp relay that I have connected to a power distribution/fuse block.

The antenna for mine is inside my cafe tail. I swipe the keyfob outside of the tail and it energizes my ignition(key on).

This thread is getting so good I need to go smoke a cigarette

Some of those RFID's are pretty powerful so just be sure you have the fob in your pocket and not in the key bowl beside your front door. You'd be in for a treat upon shutting off the bike at your destination.
