My '79 CB750f Supersport - I'll take all the help I can get

Got the fuse at autozone, when home put it on and the bike started. The bike was running really bad (worst than normal) and kept loading up and bogging down. Then after about five mins it shut off and the fuse was blown.

Anyone have any ideas as in where to start, what to test, or even what the problem is?

So I was putzing around google and I'm starting to think its an intermittent electrical problem. From the sputtering to my headlight not working, to the fuse blowing, this has to be the problem. There are only a couple places I think this could be happing. 1. I think I may have reversed the brushes on the stator 2. The plug that goes into the 30amp main fuse is corroded 3. The actual stator itself (from the cracked cement on the wires) 4. Something with the starter, when I turn the key with a fresh fuse, the lights will come on but the starter wont turn over the first couple times I hit the starter 5. Maybe the R/R is bad from electrosport.

First thing I'm going to do is test the r/r to see if its in spec, and if its not I'll send it back with the stator. After that I have no idea what to test, where to test it, what it should be to be within spec, and what to look for.

Again any help, ideas, theories, postulates, hypotheses will be greatly appreciated! :)

Check all your wiring and connections and make sure the insulation is good and the connections are clean. I had these issues and so I spent a week and lots of beer taking each connection apart, pulling each pin, sanding it clean, then Di-Electric greasing, putting back in connector, repeat till the whole bike was done, and honda uses a lot of damn connectors LOL, I also fixed any wires that had bad or questionable covering. This completely stopped any weird electrical gremlins I had. I also had a bad fuse holder. it was corroded but didn't look it, I found it buy using my multi meter and putting a good fuse in and testing continuity on the fuse (OK) then the connectors/clamps (Bad), sanded them all clean, grease, good to go again, They were just a little darker brass then clean but were not passing power well at all.

Cheers,

2. The plug that goes into the 30amp main fuse is corroded

This is not good. You can carefully remove the half of the black plastic cover that is over those spade terminals on the solenoid / fuse holder and clean the connection. there's little tabs on the side that hold it together. A little spray electric contact cleaner that's plastic safe, and a toothbrush will do the trick. Then you can also clean the fuse terminals themselfs, and the plug in side connector. Don't use WD-40 as it's an insulator.

So I finally pulled the stator to reverse the polarity of the brushes and the stator is completely black on some coils. It looks like severe burn. I'm guessing the coils were grounding to the case? does that sound like a possible problem?

I'll be sending the stator back to electrosport in the next couple weeks.

Soo its been a while.... I have pretty much got nothing done.

a small update: Got my new stator in from electrosports (great company), installed it, got her running and road her home to store/work on. As it turns out I needed to replace the whole charging system, so I also ordered a new rotor from them. Before I can replace the rotor I needed to fix the rear brakes. I bought both a caliper and master cylinder rebuild kit, and installed it. The only problem is that I can not for the life of me find a rear brake joint, part# 46504-371-000. soo...

*If anyone has a spare rear brake joint, part# 46504-371-000, please PM me!* (I also posted in the WTB thread)

But once (if ever) that gets done, I plan on replacing the rotor, cleaning/tuning the carbs, fresh plugs, new bars, and calling it a day. I had great aspirations for this bike but with college, work, and just a general lack of disposable income, I just want a bike that I can get on at any point and feel good about riding.

Thanks guys.

I'm glad you mentioned that site electrosport. They do have some really affordable parts. I feel you on having a bike to just ride at this point. I'm trying to focus on the basics with my bike and not worry about the extra time/$$ consuming things.
