My CB360 barn find

Thanks bud, let me know what questions you have and I'll be happy to try and help, there are a bunch of really smart guys on here that will never leave you hanging

Dang it! Dang it! Dang it! I spent 4 hours trying to get my new points installed and set the timing. I went to tighten the points retainer screws and both the right side ones stripped! So pissed. The backing plate seems fine. But I am not sure if I can just go to fastenall and get some replacement screws or if I have to order something. I still don't know how to put a new set of points on. I felt like the manual was worthless.

text me your new address...I will priority ship this first thing this morning. atleast 3 decent screws and the backing plate. should have it Tuesday.
BUT, did you atleast have your timing close w the light?

I always replace those bitch-ass crap screwdriver screws with some nice socket head ones.
Find it much more practical instead of messing up those heads.
If you stripped the thread of the little bolts, chances are you weakened the thread in the base plate as well.
I see you already have a saving angel to send a replacement. :)

Wow thank you so much trek. I could get the left side points gap to line up with lf, but I think it was dumb luck. I could not get the right side to line up with f. I never got passed static timing before the screws stripped. The manual says set the points gap when the points are totally open. But I have no idea where they should be totally open since the old points are off and I have no reference point and now the backing plate Is off! I really don't know what I am doing at this point or where to start.

Do you know what size screws I would need if I tried to go get the socket head ones today?

So starting with no points or backing plate on. How do I make sure I put this back together correctly? I am so frustrated with this.

I'm not around my workplace @ the moment. But I'm guessing thy are M5 x ..... You still have the screws? Just measure their outside thread diameter, they should be normal metric types.
You'll want the type of socket head with a "low head". Should be DIN7984, with a strength of 8.8 .

Those new points you have, are those with or without their backplates?

The new points had the backing plates here is what I am working with. I'm going to head to ace and see if I can get screws that will work

Check the screws you get don't protrude through plate too far
It's possible to damage advancer

Re: My CB360 barn find *Opportunity...*

OK, so i am going to preface this long post with this. Thank you so much everybody who helped me, and please..please dont hate me.
Many of you know this was my first bike build. I made several mistakes along the way and with the help of a lot of you i was able to turn out something that i think really looked great. I had some experience before this build wrenching on old cars specifically old British cars. I had an original MINI that was right hand drive with the bonnet stripes and driving lights, it was amazing. I really wanted a MGB GT and found the perfect project but the guy sold it as i was on my way to pick it up. so i found an old triumph spitfire instead i paid 200 bucks for it and compleatly re did it. It was a fun car but not exactly what i wanted. I have a thing for small cars i always have particularly the MGB GT, not sure what it is, i just love them. One thing i learned with my MINI however is do not pass up a great deal. In 2009 I traded my 2001 VW GTI straight across for the little mini cooper. the VW was worth about 4,500. when i got the mini it was in fantastic shape but it was a little plain looking. i added the hood stripes and the fog lights and a euro license plate and it looked the part. I really loved it, I told my self i would never get rid of it unless somebody paid me a STUIPED amount of money for it. so just to see what would happen i threw it up on craigslist with a price tag of 13,000. I kinda hoped nobody would buy it because i loved it some much. But i was getting ready to get married AND buy a house, it didnt take more than a few days for a guy to ask me for a test drive in the mini. the next day i had 12,000 and no more mini cooper (i drove it to his house and parked it next to he personal helocopter). That got me another car and a down payment on a brand new home in utah. It was the right choice. ever sicne then i have put the nicer things i have on craigslist waiting to see if there were any opportunities i was missing. A great guy named troy shot me a text message the other day that said "would you be interested in trading your bike for this?" and lo and behold a sweet little MGB GT. i about pooped a gold brick i was so excited. I called him right away and told him everything about the bike and confessed my obsession for MGB GTs. I showed him this build thread and it only took about a day for us to work up a straight across trade.
OK for those of you still reading, thank you. im sure some of you got pissed off and left already. While i am SUPER happy with my MG, i'm really worried that most of you guys were gonna hate me now. I felt like i made some real friends on here. and i hope i can still maintain those friendships. I hope nobody feels like i betrayed them. as long as i am welcome i would still love to be a member of DTT and i will do my best to help out people on here with CB360 projects or anything else i can help answer for anybody with questions.
Lastly, i know DTT is a cafe racer/brat/bobber forum, but its really kinda more of a builders forum. I sacrificed a lot of blood sweat tears and time creating my bike, and i am really proud of what i built, but Troy sacrificed a freaking rad little sports car to join the cafe racer scene, and i totally respect that, He knows what he got, i didnt try to hide anything from him, there is still plenty of project let in the bike and i look forward to seeing him add the stuff i didnt get to. I hope you guys will be as friendly and helpful to him as you have been to me. He is ready to get his hands dirty and join the ranks.
id like to keep this thread positive so if you guys have anything negative to say please pm me instead. I hope i get a chance to build another bike, i had a great time with this one and i feel like i did a good job with it. i will leave this thread with a few pictures i was going to send to iron and air, they offered to do a story on my bike i dont really feel like i deserve to be featured in the magazine anymore.. cheers to you all.

All the funs in the journey man, you got the taste of bikes and will eventually get another to build I bet. You did a great job on the 360 and I always spend time looking it over when I come across a pic of her, I am sure Troy will really enjoy her.
No pics of the mgb gt yet?
The first car I remember my dad having was a green mg, our first move it got transported on a small trailer dad used to carry bikes and lawn mowers on, was such a cool car.

Saweeeet! Love the look! Like how the seat fairs into the tank....may have to do that myself.

I'd say you got a hell of a deal in that trade assuming the car runs proper. I really can't believe it though. You worked a long time on that thing. I have motorcycle A.D.D and usually sell any bike i buy within a year. No worries have fun with the car. Can't believe someone traded you for that.

the car runs fantastic. i drove it home 85+ miles after the trade. The brakes need a little work, the paint is pretty rough, it needs a few odds and ends, no bumpers, back seat needs to be redone, headlights dont work, driving lights arnt hooked up, something is ratteling under the hood..but virtually no rust at all, rockers are solid (no filler eaither), body is 99% straight. it really was a hell of a deal. i did work for a really long time on the bike, but yes i could not pass up a MGB GT. Troy is on here now, Look out for mgbracer80. take good care of him.

Stick around man, I am sure you will pick up another project soon enough.

And no worries, I would have made the same trade in a heartbeat.

i do have an old bicycle i was gonna throw a motor on and try a board track racer with. here is my crappy ms paint rendering
