So the bike is up and running again. I have some fine tuning to do that who ever installed the pods didn't do. Basically lust need to pick the needles up a notch. Don't think there is going to be a need for re-jetting. Bike is fun, and FAST! Gotta call the insurance guy this morning and I'm off and running.
Ya, road 60 miles today. I've got a 1st Gear 4 seasons jacket, Fleece lined jeans and a full face helmet which all keep me pretty warm. I'm tell'n ya. You need to hit up the thrift stores for MC gear. The jacket I wore today retails for $400. I got mine last yr at goodwill (the same one I got the leather jacket @) for $10, like new too!
So the bike is up and running again. And the cure was ? Was the bike dropped on that side ? Stator cover in good shape ? Once she is set up you will have a much different view of these bikes.

Ignition key switch developed a short. I dont usually get off that easy, so I stoked. I am still having a little bog @ around 5000. Still a little to do yet.
What is your carb set up? needle position, jetting and pilot screw? and with that mods to exhaust and filtration?
What is your carb set up? Stock 850 setup, Hitachi's with air box K&N and stock exhaust. I can tell you that the airbox is a pain but with the carbs properly synched i have had no trouble in all the years i have owned this bike. Good all around performance and 17kms to the litre. Once the airbox is removed it can be very troublesome getting a good setup. Look at the Triples site for the jetting of the mikuni II using 78 xs1100 jetting and needle jets. Before you go to any more adjustments try a can of Seafoam in a full tank through the carbs, has been known to cure a lot of ills. ;D
The Po installed pods on this bike. I am not usually a fan, especially when they are e-bay units. I have the stock air box. I think I'm going to install it and see what happens.
I think I'm going to install it Good idea. You are in Boise ? There is a guy by the name of Clint Hoops that would be invaluable to you, used to be a Yammie dealer back in the day and knows these bikes inside out.
As beneficial as the stock air box is...I hate it. So much of a PITA to get the carbs and box installed properly.
Pods make the frequent carb removal a 30 second job. I got some really nice pods from Mike's XS. Three of them for $45 is not cheap but look great and even have XS stamped on them to really make that old heap bling.
I have carb to air box boots of you need them. They are in like new condition. $10 plus shipping.
Use the Mikuni carbs. The Hitachi carbs are awful for tuning from what I've read. I have the Mik I carbs and they seems just fine to me. Mik II carbs are supposed to be better but I couldn't tell you if the difference is really noticeable.
Pods make the frequent carb removal a 30 second job. My carbs have not been off since i bought this bike, how many seconds have i saved in the last 14 years ?

Thanks for the replies guys. I have the Mikuni's. It definitly needs better pods @ a minimum. I have a shit ton of cheap pods in the garage because every heap I bring home has got them installed by the PO.
every heap I bring home has got them installed by the PO. Does this not tell you a story ? ;D Maybe a day with an instructor would be a better investment.
You think "picking the needle up a click" would help on my bike? Honestly, shoot me for being dumb but I don't even know what that means... But I bet I can figure it out.

I'm not sure if you carb has adjustable needles or not..? It has needles for sure. But some are fixed position.. Where to make a change you would need to purchase another needle. It would have a # on it just like a jet.
Thanks Tripler.
I assure you I wont buy a crappy 3-1. I may make my own, we'll see...
I'm really liking this bike people. Suuuuuuuuuuuuper easy to wrench on. Swag got me pumped, said he got a 110hp out of his! hooooooooo-ya!

So the 1st minor modification has begun. I started with the part that was in the worst shape, the seat. It had a rip about 4" long. I had bought a used SE model seat to restore, but decided I looked kinda lame. So, I disassembled it. Took the foam and 3M'd a chunk of it to my D model foam and seat pan. Then just started shaping it with a bread knife. After that I fine tuned the shape with a 60 grit flap disc.
This is what I ended up with. Going to start sewing the cover in just a bit. I started this project because it was snowing out, and I couldn't ride. Now, that my bike has no seat on it. It's sunny and warm out side. F__k!
