My T100R cafe build

Well I figured it was time to start this thread my first 'real' thread. Well I'm finally getting moving on my build after a two year break, I got this bike as a chopper monstrosity extended forks no cross bar for the head steadies and a crappy 70's hard tail Z bars the whole bit.. I spent alittle bit of time trying to make it a tasteful hard tail with intent to get rid of it and was struck down with mechanical issue after issue ( motor seized 3 times .. in 3 different ways! :) ) So now that I'm keeping it out of spite really it's going all cafe all the way. pretty much starting over from square one, sold off most of the chopper crap it came with to get it out of my garage. And, if all goes well I should have the motor back in the frame by next week. Ok so im going to try and figure out how to post pics.. if I fail it's all documented on my blog http://cafetrumpet.blogspot.com

Edit: Oh yea I should note.. it started out as this:

This is where the frame is now, having to use a T100C frame that I got from one of the local Triumph elders around here.

Though nothing is bolted on the top end, I had just gotten my shinny new cylinders and had to at least make it look like a motor.. it's the little things..

Hard to tell in the photo with the light/flash but those rocker arms are actually pretty shinny, started lightening and polishing em, still haven't found the magical washer combo that will let me pull those stock springs outta there...

And despite a few clean up attempts this is still what my bench looks like .. though some of the names and locations have changed the parts remain the same.

If all goes well I might be getting a Mojave 360 tank for her here soon... we'll see if the owner of said tank can be talked into releasing it...

Made a bit of progress today.. Hacked out some bracket that was likely welded in for a "chopper oil tank" that was obstructing my stock oil tank from going back in.. and got my new tappet blocks drifted in without braking a single fin!

This is the first time I've drifted my own tappet blocks in and while a remedial task I'm just happy in all the swinging of a hammer towards my cylinders that everything is still in one piece

Though Im not so sure about this follower, the sides look a bit abused.. though the top looks ok.. at least from what I can tell on my limited knowledge on what is too worn etc.

Thanks! hopefully I won't do anything stupid like catch it on fire or something... ::) ( sadly I've actually done that before.. but not this time! everyone / (bike) deserves a second chance right ? right.. lol

We used to be able to buy thick spacers/washers to replace those Thackery washers (springs). DO MAP still sell them for T140's? You can grind a a huge amount out of those rockers. Do you have a copy of the Boyers of Bromley tuning book? I seem to recall that mine was basically worn out when I sold all my Triumph stuff years ago.

Yea I heard there was a mythical part number for those washers that are the right thickness and everything, i've been hunting for to no avail, def still working on taking more meat off the arms for sure, I actually have a different one on tuning "Triumph Tuning" by Stan Shenton, I'll have to see if I can find that one, I prefer to have more books than less, right now I'm even cross referencing two different shop manuals just to cover my bases.

edit:
Ha.. so yea the book I have appears to be one in the same, has boyer racing on the back cover and google seems to link the two titles together

Stan Shenton book is the one. Those were the Boyers of Bromley bikes that Stan worked on. Nothing earth shattering but great insight into how races were won.

Wassel used to sell them plus alloy timing gears etc etc. I sold a box load of that stuff a few years ago.

Try Unity in the UK. They had them in their last catalogue, part #UNA116 for a set.

Awesome thanks Teazer I'll check em out. Yea in the end thats where I want to take it fight now just trying to get the big stuff done and get it on the road, but figure as time progresses I'll make those little changes along the way.

cheers!

Thanks guys, I definitely appreciate the re-enforcement, about to go do some gentle sanding on my problem cam follower and hopefully relieve that tension as soon as thats good i can throw the cylinders on the cases and get it back in the frame and start making some real progress. So hopefully if all goes well that'll be my next update. More to come indeed.

cheers

well sorted out the cam follower with some emery cloth and a fine flat file, but it would seem im not awesome enough to pull off compressing the rings without the tool and dropping the cylinders, I actually know a guy who refers to his hands as his ring compressors .. well i gave it a shot and stopped before i broke a ring.. tool will be here thursday... suppose that give me a day to polish up that new rocker that showed up and maybe take some more meat off the others.

Awesome! I love when a bike can go through a couple of transformations! Keep the pic's update for us!

Will do Andy, hoping I'll have some updates here real soon, trying to find a second set of hands right now to get these cylinders on, resorting to hoseclamps to compress the rings no one seems to have ring compressors and MAP just sold out like .. a few hours before i put in my order lol.. figures..

Teazer thanks again for the reference I found Unity and that part number sent an e mail off to the address they have up for orders last night haven't heard back yet but figured it might take em a bit since it looked like prob not a whole lot of staff I'm guessing. They even had a few other things I had been looking around for so it's a win win.. now if only they were located next to Scitsu and could bulk my shipping from across the pond lol ( one can dream right)

We have a Scitsu tacho on a race bike and I love it do death but I hate the non replaceable battery and wild swings. For any bike with normal (non magneto) ignition, I'd rather run almost any cheapish electronic tacho that takes its feed from the coils. They do look the part though.....

Yea I was reading about what a pain they are when he battery pack goes out, so I'm taking a chance on the B1 thats powered by the battery on the bike, I didn't find too much data on them outside AJS's site but I talked to Chris Kinsey about it a bit and he seemed to feel it was just a preference in weight as far as having a batt on board or not, so I'm giving it a shot. And.. this little ( and I do mean LITTLE gem just arrived today )

ENIMAGE1335999888195.jpg

Im still in awe at how small it really is, 13v 120CCA 6ah, I am running a boyer so im a bit leary of it's needs, but I plan to put all my lights on a separate switch so I can engage the ignition and not draw anything away while I kick away to my hearts content, only other thing that I'll have on it now will be the tach.

Yea I looked at a few of the other options too but honestly I saw one of the Scitsu's on a bike that one of our local shops put together and just couldn't resist.. I think that one is about a month or so out as far as getting here.

Anyhow, off to see if I can get these cylinders on without breaking a ring

Ok finally got the cylinders on, found an extra set of experienced hands to help me out before i started breaking rings . And, seeing as I was having a hard time finding a ring compressor some improvisation was required.

And ready to go to town:

And Finally.... after much prodding stabbing with screwdrivers and cursing and yelling..

just need to get pushrods and tubes on slap the head back on there and get her in the frame

Lumpy looking pistons. Are they stock Daytona or aftermarket? It's decades since I owned one of those bikes and I sure as heck don't remember exactly what the piston crowns looked like.

Stock Daytona's 9:1 ratio, I think there is even some that are 9.5:1 but i can't recall which model year etc it was, but yea these are the stock ones, I managed to find some NOS hepolite pistons for this go around too, fortunetly R also has a hotter cam stock too, certainly makes my life a bit easier thats for sure, nice to have a couple of easy wins in the bag.
