My T100R cafe build

And you have 1 1/8 radius tappets not stock 3/4" to go with the 3134 profile cams- yes?

No they are 3/4 haven't gotten a chance to upgrade much on the motor at this point mostly just refurbishing right now and once its running well start doing things one small upgrade at a time mostly just for cost reasons.

Sadly I just had to pull the cylinders back off the tappet blocks were slightly out of alignment and throwing off the pushrod tubes so they will need to come out and be realigned and drifted back in. Not sure how I missed that before getting the rings into the cylinders but such is life. Hopefully by this weekend I can have it corrected and the motor put back together and ready to sit in the frame.. hopefully.

Hard to see in the pic but the block is raised just a bit up front and flush in the back creating an angle on the tubes not by much but enough to cause a problem.

Well we might have gotten the tappet blocks sorted, I'll have a better idea when i can get a buddy over to help me finagle the rings back into the cylinders.

In the mean time I figured I'd make some progress and make a mudguard to go up under the seat. This is my first attempt using fiber glass, still need to trim this and sand it and such, but it's a start and a heck of a lot lighter than the metal version I have.

Also started getting the front fender cut down and lined up, just need to make a mount for it now .. well and paint and finish the edges, forward motion none the less.

Started trimming and sanding today, still a long way to go but it's a start.

And this is the idea, just an out of view barrier to go under the seat cowl to keep the crud from flinging off the tire into everything else.

Well I scored a tank, not too much clean up to be done on it mainly just some mounting overall pretty clean inside. Also a plug i tried to create for a seat, kinda wonky so I doubt I'll use it, but it was a good initial learning experience.

Well it's been a bit since i've updated I figure it's time..

Some goodies that have come in:

Finally got the motor back together after the issue I had with my tappet blocks.

2012-05-27_20-00-51_259.jpg

Snazzy new amals, I know I know the whole debate about stacks and how they should be track use only (I have some on order from steadfast with screens but they aren't too much bigger than these palstic jobs that come from amal) It's not a daily rider and the intent is to a`have a street legal bike that is a blast to ride on track days.. I know the risks im taking them and will deal with the consequences.

2012-05-27_20-18-14_501.jpg

And with side panel and oil tank , and seat cowl (seat is a work in progress to get the fit just right..)

2012-05-27_20-17-10_290.jpg

And with muffler zip tied to the frame, it will have to kick out away from the bike more that was just for the sake of mocking it up, it'd prob boil my oil as close as it is in the mock up you get the idea though.

All and all it's actually starting to look like a motorcycle again..

Thanks, still a long long way to go but i def feel better seeing the motor back in the frame .. i guess it's just something about it looking like a motorcycle.. before it's all said and done frame will be a bright Ducati Red and the body work will be white with a red stripe.. such is the goal anyway been talking to a vinyl shop that does vintage racing decals to cut a "500cc" emblem to replace the 360 tank badges planning on encasing the vinyl in clear hobby resin used it before in some other more art driven projects to create the disc as it were before mounting them on the benalli tank.

Cheers

Good stuff man tiny Red hint (Rosso Corsa).....I'm about to tear my engine out and i'm up in the air about color right now, Not sure if I want to Do Red on this one or not......Thats cool your creating badges i should probably try and think that far ahead as well....Found these little guys today if they weren't $5 each I would have bought more I wish I knew what they were called

That'd be 3059R's then ?

Nice build BTW - brings back some memories, although my particular poison were the 500 Grand Prix engines. Somewhere in the loft there's a set of drilled, narrowed and polished timing gears from a 500 !

yep I recognize that patch, I was just hunting around for decals the other day steadfast was one of the places I looked before reaching out to a custom place can't help but browse all things Triumph sometimes. Yea I considered a white frame but I have white rims on the Ducati now and it's impossible to keep clean. And, it'll be even cooler if I can actually make the badges ;) im buying extra's for sure in case i botch a few.

Thanks beachcomber, yea those GP bikes were awesome, that's the inevitable where I'd rather be just building with .. a somewhat cost conscience sense at the moment, been scoping out a few fairings for the future as well lately though that piece is on the back burner in favor of getting it running and stopping.

You ever get to rummaging through that loft and stumble on those and want to give them a new home... ;) feel free to shout in my direction.

I figure I will slowly start collecting race internals and once I have something worth while i'll rip the motor back out and go to town, be kinda fun to take it to the track do a run with a stock motor rip it out and upgrade a few things and see what the difference is, that'll be a long long process though.

cheers

Correct 3059 versus 3059R which go with the old 3134 profiles in a GP or T100 pre-unit motor. Unit 500s had different part numbers for the cams at least but they used the same 3125, 3075 and 3134 profiles IIRC.

I don't know how I missed this thread earlier. I really like how this is coming together, your bike will be a thing of beauty.

Hell Duck - would be great to put them to some use !

A pal drilled them and narrowed them for me and I spent 2 days polishing them [ 1967 ? ]. When I last saw them [ about 25 years ago ] was when we moved into our current house and quite a lot of my "spare" good stuff went straight into the loft !

There's also set of balanced and highly polished Tiger 90 alloy rods up there somewhere !

Mrs.B keeps threatening to have a sort out up there one day - when she does, I'll put them on one side. BTW - when I last saw them they still retained the high polish I'd put on them in the sixties !

You probably read on one of my other posts about an old pal who went to the military auctions in the sixties and bought up a lorry load of Triumph ex. RAF generator sets - the basis for the 500cc Grand Prix engines. ;)

Sweet, yea lemme know, I imagine i'll be collecting go fast bits and pieces for a while before i rip her back apart.

I had not actually but i just went on a hunt to find it lol. You know when I started this I really wanted to just go full bore and do all the racey bits up front but had to pull back the reigns from a cost perspective to fund all the other pieces, I was kinda bummed about it, but now I'm actually looking forward to running the bike bone stock and then doing an overhall on her (good excuse to tear back into it i guess) and seeing what the difference is, I think it'll be pretty interesting to be able to quantify it like that, should be fun if nothing else!

Working on mounting the bits and pieces now and welding up the exhaust which Im prob going to have to do again later on when I start getting to a fit and finish point the headers I have are a bit.. mangled def not worth re-chroming prob just suck it up and throw some high heat paint on them to keep the rust at bay till i can replace them.

Anyone know of a source to find T100 TT pipes already merged into a collector for a 2 into 1, or alternatively TT's that are unfinished and come in just raw mild steel since I'll have to have my collector and the pieces leading up to my muffler plated anyway.

Cheers!

More updates:

Well I welded in the collector yesterday but it was wonky due to the bend angle in the headers under the bike and just looked awful.. so to the chop saw it went.

Round two

And here's a side shot of the collector:
2012-05-29_20-03-37_348.jpg

now I'm just working out distance to not interfere with the rear sets that aren't built yet.. hmm better not screw that one up..

And truthfully I must say I had to sleep on it I was considering just leaving it as it would have been 'functional' and just wrapping over the ugly bit under the bike (I hate exhaust wrap on pipes .. i've done it before in a pinch but it's not by any means my preference) After a good nights sleep I came to my sense and cut it to pieces and just started over again..glad I did.

Exhaust continued:

did some additional work on my muffler today. Heres a few pics from before though just to take it from beginning to end. I had the cocktail shaker lying around so i figured I'd put it to good use.

35361.jpg

with a hacksaw a file and allot of patience did this:
35360.jpg

So today, i decided to do away with the upsweep and just come straight off the exhaust after sitting in front of the bike holding the muffler up and dozing off periodically.

So i lopped off the upsweep with the trusty chop saw (upgraded the hacksaw) and re welded the coupler piece of the muffler to the "cone"

2012-05-30_20-52-06_309.jpg

just a tad bit of smoothing to do and ready to mount.

Put a few hours more in on the exhaust today, still not done but it's holding it's final (i hope) shape need to touch up a few things and then smooth out all the weld areas a bit more before I either paint it or get it plated headers are still pretty banged up not sure if I want to spend the plate money on them right now might just paint it all black even though I'd much rather it just be plated.. we'll see..
