New Guy from Iowa needs advice.

Been Around the Block
Hello All,

I have recently acquired a taste for the cafe racer scene. I am looking at buying a KZ650 from my buddy. He says its a 87' but I think he meant 78' for obvious reasons. He said its only running on two holes, and it needs a new coil pack and it needs the points set. He told me he was going to have it done in the spring and he would want around 2k for it. Im wondering how hard/expensive it is to do this myself. I am relatively mechanically inclined. I took all the Autotech courses in High school and have worked on cars and Jeeps for a couple now as a hobby. Any advise, insight, and opinions would be appreaciated!

Thanks!

They're pretty simple jobs. In fact, they're the sort of thing you'll get used to doing if you own a vintage bike.

As far as the $2000 price tag, apparently he's not that good of a buddy. Haha. That's about $1500 too much for a bike in that condition.

haha I am currently in Iowa City. I told him I couldnt do anything above 1500 and that was his "I went and got it fixed" price. Im going to go check it out on saturday. Does anyone have a link on how to set points? If I like what I see I might throw a number at him.

76cb500T- I really wish you didnt live that far away haha. Im going to need help with this project!
Are there any cafe groups around Iowa? I knew to the scene.

Thanks!

Does it have a title ? and the guys are right on the price way high and you can find nicer for less ! As in parts would say under 300.00 if thats the ONLY things it need ! Good luck man and let us know what you do :)

Yeah he says he has the title for it. He was going to make it a bobber but then he had a harley pop into his lap so now hes working on that. I found a 79 honda cb750k for like 500 bucks on CL today. So Im going to used craigslist prices to drive down his asking price....substantially

Welcome new member. I would buy the 500 dollar bike. You could Customize it pretty well with the other 1500 dollars and Make IT YOURS!!!

Whichever bike you decide on (I'd go for the $500 Honda...), you FIRST order of business is to order a proper manual. It'll describe it all to you in detail.

I used to live in northeast Iowa and cedar falls area. Welcome to the site. I'm a little biased to the kz but that is too much money for it. Kz650.info is a very good resource the kz's. There are tons of how to's on that site and they are very detailed. Von is right though whichever way you go you will need a manual. If you choose the kz then visit that site because a nice gentleman uploaded the manual for most years. Good luck!

I offered him 500 cash. He replied 500 plus the registration fee. I guess he never put it in his name cause he never rode it. So the next question is, is how much does registration usually cost? Its been in his possession for about 2 years now.

Bowman- I live in Iowa city haha. Where did you move?

I'm not sure what it is in Iowa. If there are no problems it's usually inexpensive like under 100 for everything.

I wrestled in college at upper Iowa university. After college I moved to waverly with some college friends. I worked in cedar falls for 2 years then decided it was time to move back to my hometown.

Yeah I figured the registration would be no more than 120. Ive never personally registered a bike so I dont know.

Im doing that college thing down here at Iowa.

ahhh that would be sweet. I think Iowa has a thing where the price increases after 90 days of acquiring the vehicle. I could be wrong, and I hope I am.
Anyways Im going to go check it out today ill try to post pictures later.

If you acquire the bike and do not register it within a certain time period they do impose extra fines. I found out the hard way. I bought a CB350 and didnt register it for 6 months while i was working on it. Not a fun conversation with my county...

Well here it is in all of its glory... After looking at it my top dollar was 500 not a penny more. He said that he had too much money into it to sell it that low. Im still trying to figure out what money he has put into it. I know for a fact its been sitting in his garage for like a year.

Anyways, that ship has pretty much sailed. Now I play the waiting game, bikeless.
