New to DTT! 71CL350 Cafe Project

Man, I've been dormant for the last few months. Work, School, etc are getting in the way of fun.

Getting back at it!
after reading this thread http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=23045.40 I scored a killer deal on some shinko 712 tires. I went with a 110 rear and 100 front. I reaaaaally liked the look of the 120 in the back, but that may press my luck getting it mounted.

I also am relocating my brake light switch to one mounted on the lower shock bolt like the motobits link I posted earlier.

scored one of these kickstand mounts from lowbrow for christmas.
detail_1514_weld-on-kick-stand-mount-lug-triumph-photo-1.jpg

I'll be relocating my kickstand, and removing the center stand. Problem is that the 350 kickstand is too dang short! I'm told the 500/550 kickstands are about an inch longer.. so I've got one of them coming as well.

9 bucks, powdercoated for sale on ebay!

Should be making progress this weekend! Glad to be back at it.

how does she sound/preform with just the headers like that? I have the same setup on my 360 and wanted to try it without the exhaust

She seems to run well. Plenty loud!

I'd like to check out a 2-1 header that tucks under the bottom of the frame....BUt the CL pipes look cool....

Some reaaaally good progress today.

My cb500/550 kickstand arrived today.
About 1" Longer than stock. Note lowbrow customs kickstand lug above it.

The lowbrow mount is 1/2" thick, and the honda kickstands are about 3/8" thick. I dont have a mill, so i need to grind an 1/8" off the backside of the lug. Needed a way to hold it... so i welded it to my stand...

My Shinko 712's also showed up! 110/90/18 rear, 100/90/19 front. Kinda wishing I'd have gone 100 rear and 90 front, but these look badass as is.
Getting the mezzlers off was a BITCH. Not sure I'd do it by hand again... I still need to balance them.

I also changed my mind about the rear brake light switch. I wasnt happy with my first iteration... so off it went.

and IN WITH THE NEW! I routed the cabling through the swing arm. Way slick...

crappy pic. But, BABY GOT NEW SHOES!!! Also, no more center stand!

I'll pay it forward and give these tires away to someone who needs to get rollin, like they were given to me by my friend, and DTT member 'Gray'.

Made some additional progress this morning.

I got the kickstand lug ground down to 3/8", and the kickstand to bolt up to it.

The kickstand lug puts the spring on the inside, while the honda stand has the spring on the outside. Easy enough, hacked the cb350 kickstand spring lug off and welded it onto the 550 stand.

Welded the lug on. Need to pull the motor to finish welding the inside edge of it. Still, plenty sturdy for now. Have some 'goober' mig welds to clean up.

Making some progress....

Turns out, I also killed the ignition coils by leaving the key on for too long :(. Got some MikesXS650 coils on the way.

Found this 18" Akront wheel locally...laced to an old husqvarna hub. Hope to relace this one someday and find a 19" for the front.

Why, too wide?

Where did you get that rear brake light switch?

I think a 90 would have looked better on the front.

I think motorsports superstore? Turns out, I accidentally bought 2 of them. I thought the first one didnt work, so i bought another. Checked it with the meter, and it works fine. I'd sell it to you cheap :)

Hey, thanks again for the tires, nice progress youve been making! We should definitely ride once both our bikes are "done", keep it up!

Nice to meet you as well man! Hope those tires get you rollin :)

Progress report: It runs / rides!
Got a few miles under it, and still shaking some things out.
Seems to run great, but runs out of fuel around 6000 rpm, guessing I need to up the main jet again. (currently a 120...)
Also, it appears its not charging awesome, as it'll eventually die while running the 35w headlight. (Did the charging mod, and its all new wiring).

Anyway...took her for a spin :)

So much fun, I had to phone a friend to come join me!

Also... scored some factory NIB spokes for a CL350 off ebay. Way cheaper than the thailand spokes or Buchanans! Gotta find another akront rim and then that project can start :)

Yeah, I can see now that it does look a tad large. Are those stock rims?

Yep, stock rims for now.

Working on some Akront or / MikesXS650 shouldered rims at the moment.

Made some progress after work today.

I ordered up the xs650 coils from mikes xs. They require some adapting to fit under the stock tank in the stock coil position. From some other people here on DTT, i got a rough idea on how to make them fit.

Started with 1/8" Thick b 3/4" wide aluminum bar stock. Drilled the holes to match stock coil locations. Stock screws will be replaced. Took impact driver to loosen them.

Mocked up the new coils, and made the mount adjustable for tweaking of their location.
cut off wheel and metal file.

Ran out of daylight today. Will get them wired up and report back the improvements.

Wow, I've been dormant for a while. Work/School/Life kicking my butt for some time.

Some updates!

Roughed out some 3/4" dense neoprene foam for a seat.

took the bike for a solid ~1hr ride... came back missing an air filter LOL. Went down the street to UNI and picked up some new pods :)

UNI's...

scored some oil-lite bronze impregnated swing arm bushings off ebay.

i also detabbed the swing arm last night. Gonna paint or pcoat it... and press in the bushings.

The bike runs with the pamco/XS650 coils. I need to locate a timing light, but it runs! Unfortunately my ballistic battery died... so they are sending me a larger 4cell to replace it. Keeping busy in the mean time....

AC

What size uni pods did you get? I have a 72 cb350 Im thinking about getting for. They have a bunch of sizes buy im guessing 2" opening? http://www.chaparral-racing.com/Product/uni-pod-4-filter/314-4152.aspx

They have a kit specifically FOR the cb350, but they use like 6" long filters and look cheezy. they are designed to work with the stock air box side covers and come with a threaded rod for that.

These are the for or 4" ones. Yes 2" opening. UNI has a website with tons of choices on them. You can also get a double element version. (2 foams)

I've read that UNI's are about the same flow as k/n type pod filters. I'm still playing with jetting... but I'd imagine +1 for pods.

I'm getting intermittent spark on my bike so I ordered the same coils and a MikesXS condenser to replace the stock ones, probably going to follow your mounting method to get them on the bike. Just wondering, is the rearset linkage you're using from motobits? I got some rearsets that my mechanic had laying around but I just need to figure out how to make them work

yup, motobits rearsets.

Intermittent spark? check wiring for loos connections etc.

Mine seemed to run pretty well on the coils and pamco.
