New XS750 (Triple) Project **UPDATE 3/29/11 with pictures!**

Re: New XS750 (Triple) Project

Right, that would make sense, thanks for the photos. Trouble is, my frame doesn't have a post at all on it...just two mounting points...I'll get some closeups tomorrow.

Re: New XS750 (Triple) Project

Was in the process of pulling the pistons, and when i was removing one of the circlips, it dropped into the crankcase!  I pulled the oil pan, the clip was nowhere to be found...Anyone have any advice as to how to find the clip, or am i going to have to crack the crankcase? Really wasnt hoping to get this deep into the build...

Re: New XS750 (Triple) Project

There is a little peep hole(at least on mine) inside the clutch side behind the cover that looks under the crank. I found gear teeth in there so that may be of some help.

Re: New XS750 (Triple) Project

Anyone know where i can find the tool to remove the alternator flywheel? Everywhere I look, i cant seem to find the right one. Its for a 1979 yamaha xs750SF

Re: New XS750 (Triple) Project

Small update, I started tearing the motor apart. The cams and the cylinder walls seem to be in VERY good shape, and the valves and pistons seem to have a decent amount of carbon buildup on them. As you can probably see from the pictures, the PO painted the engine a HORRID black which is now flaking off all over the place. I'm tearing the engine down for two reasons: To replace all the gaskets, and to repaint it. Any advice as to how to remove the carbon buildup from the cylinder heads/valves and the pistons? I was thinking a wire brush on a buffer wheel would do the trick, but the clymer manual specifically recommended against it.

Camshafts in pristine shape

Cylinders in good shape, notice the horrible flaking of the previous paint job

This is the carbon buildup I was talking about.

Re: New XS750 (Triple) Project

For what its worth, I bought a hand held blaster at walmart and then bought a tub of soda media at tractor supply. I went at it for a few hours and it works pretty well on cast aluminum(wheels etc.)not so well on frame, tank. Need a big compressor though, I was using a 60 gallon and it was pretty much running non stop. I dont know what the compression was like before you tore it down but you may want to check ring tolerance etc. Its all in the manual!

Re: New XS750 (Triple) Project

Compression was actually quite good...Should I leave the same O-rings on the pistons if that is the case, or should I replace them? Obviously the headgasket and base gasket will be replaced, just not sure about the piston rings.

Re: New XS750 (Triple) Project

I read that you can give them a call or email and ask them for other parts not listed on their site. They could probably special order it for you.

Re: New XS750 (Triple) Project

Awesome, thanks for the link. Do you think I'll have to buy resistors for the LED's or will I be good without them?

Re: New XS750 (Triple) Project

for what LEDs? if u are running LED turn signals then yes, becuase they will flash faster than usual. You can get the correct flasher at most autoparts stores for anywhere from 25.00 to 40.00 dollars

Re: New XS750 (Triple) Project

I think he is referring to the ones in the gauge itself. Those are pre-wired and ready to go.

Re: New XS750 (Triple) Project

Small update/question...I'm going to be rattlecanning a bunch of parts soon, namely the tank and seat cowl. I want to do matte black with a gloss black stripe down the top of the tank and cowl. Anyone know any good techniques to get this done? Also, any paint that people have used with good results?
