Hi, trying to sort out this wiring on my little 1974 tx500 project.

The wiring looks simple, but i can't quite figure out exactly how to wire things even after checking some wiring diagrams i found on the web,

I have eliminated the starter and starter relay as i am looking to go kickstart only.

wire #1 - not sure what this is. I assume the rear lights.
wire #2 - positive wire to battery and to starter relay( i removed wire that was going to relay)
wire #3 - was going to starter relay.
wire #4 - was going to starter relay
wire #5 - ground i assume.

I found it will only start if i connect #2 and #3 to the battery. However, when i do this, key position no longer matters, power on the dash goes active until i disconnect.

#4, i have no idea what it is but i assume this is needed?

Any help would be great, thanks!

First off, clean #5 and the frame until shiny clean. #4 is the signal wire from your start button to activate the relay and turn the starter. Solid red is 12V unswitched from the battery and activates the started when the B/W tells it to then disconnects. Has the fuse to protect. #1 is your tail light. nothing to do with ignition. #3 is your power to the coils? If you turn on the key is there 12V at the R/W #3? If so you don't need to do anything but plug in the tail light plug to start it. If not you need 12V to the # 3 only from a switched source.

Ah ok so with key on #3 does indeed read 12v. It does start ok, I guess I wasn't kicking hard enough before,

So, blue #4 can go since I won't be push button staring it.

Red #3 then can also go it seems?

Thanks!

And don't just cut them back. Maybe cut the connector off, but leave the wire long. Folks change their mind down the road, bikes are sold....

One thing a lot of people get confused with is that the switch sources usually connect to ground, not power. So any time the bike is powered up, all the positive terminals are on. Starter button connects to grind, not positive. Etc.

Red/white wire should be getting power from the kill switch at the front of the bike. With the switch set to run, you will have power. With the switch set to off, no power. Blue/white is the ground from the relay back to the start button. The circuit is completed when you press the button and the powered relay is able to gorund.
