Outride a Crisis - Honda CB450

Alright cool. When I take out the relay do I just tape off the wires on the harness end?

Thanks for the help man!

YUP, or take them out of the harness completely. I like to pull all the tap off and put on split loom, I thinks it looks cleaner that way.

Yeah it's a slightly older one. A Sony Alpha200 (a200). I used to have a Konica Minolta with a bunch of lenses so when Sony bought KM I got the newer Sony a.

It's a great camera, but I recently saw some of the new alphas and the things they're doing now are amazing. Translucent mirrors and junk.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Updates coming soon. Got my hubs out at Buchanan's now!

Couple small things again.

Finally found a rear sprocket after getting at least four that the ebay seller's claimed would fit. They didn't till now.

Finished cleaning up the brake reservoir and replaced the master cylinder boots and circlips. Just have to polish the cap.

And pretty much have the controls together. Also installed a front fender from a Honda CL350. It's smaller than the 450, but uses the same mounting points. I just had to cut away a bit of the bracket because the CL has a drum brake and the bracket contacted the 450's caliper mount.

The fender will be painted along with the bodywork, but it's mounted for fitment and so the thing starts looking like a motorcycle again. Wheels are coming soon.

I've got another wiring question (sorry), so those pics are coming.

Hey Finnigan,

The build is hanging around. Stalled out a bit with other projects taking priority. Getting back to work though and it should be getting going again. I haven't heard this machine run in a long time.

What an excellent thread thus far. And some of my favorite pieces have been the old tools you've restored. I'm a young guy too (21) and look for vintage tools and antique metal items all the time. I'll definitely be watching the rest of this build

Glad to see progress. Attention to detail takes time. Mine won't be done until all the "little things" are the way I want it. I won't be happy riding it if they are not completed.

Plus the satisfaction of just looking at a well built bike and all the hard work is a great feeling.

Thanks for the input guys. I'll post up some pics here of some of the little projects since there have been a good number of people talking about the old tools and stuff.

A 100 year old Walworth wrench I restored.

A similarly old Speedy Pipe Vise with Bronze jaws!

So those are some of the little things. I'm going to be spending some quality time on the Honda this weekend and I'm pretty excited about it.

Ahhh those are phenomenal! My next side project is a vintage two-man saw that's been hanging on my grandfather's old shed for quite some time.

I'm excited to see progress on the Honda, and this is definitely a motivational thread. Keep it up man.

I have a 100+ year old bolt/chain cutter. Would be sick to restore. Thanks for the inspiration.

Honestly I find almost everything I restore from the local scrap metal place. People just need cash so they load up their trucks with whatever they can find. It's kind of unfortunate that someone would scrap out a 100 year old piece of industrial heritage from Boston to make, what, literally 18 cents in scrap iron?

So I save what I can from the heap and restore them and sell them on ebay. Some of the pieces I keep, like the bronze jawed pipe vise. But most of the items get sold online in an effort to fund my motorcycle projects and my watch habit.

I take some small pride that people like my stuff enough to shell out their hard-earned cash. It's very fun so any of you guys who have old stuff, get going and strip and paint! Good luck!

Been doing some work on the old Honda. Here are some updates with a lot more coming after this weekend.

I removed the old points and breaker plate and replaced it with a NOS one. I also replaced the coils, condenser, spark plug wires and plug boots.

I had to fabricate some simple little aluminum brackets to mount the new coils, as they were not NOS coils. This was the most time consuming part, but it works.

I also got a new tachometer and installed that (simple). You can see what the dash area is going to look like now. Doing something a little interesting (ie. stupid) with the speedometer to keep the top end looking clean and minimal. When sitting on the bike you can see the speed easily sitting down below and next to and to the front of the gas tank.

Old parts. Yuck.

That's it for now. As I alluded to earlier, I have a lot of parts coming in the mail. Custom indicator lights for one. That should be something fun and new. Aiming for a September finish on this project that has taken an outrageous amount of time. Granted, I did simply decide I wasn't working on it for over a year...

So this is a weird little project.

I'm into watches and I got this German pocket watch a few months ago. I don't really use it because, well, it's a pocket watch. I have a bunch of wristwatches that take precedence.

Anyway, I have had this idea to create a mount for one of my watches to put on the Honda or on my Triumph, but I didn't really want to risk losing, damaging, or having stolen one of my expensive watches.

Suddenly I remembered the pocket watch...

I used some random scrap aluminum I had lying around. I work in a laboratory equipment shop, so this is actually a stripped side cover from a horrible, horrible vacuum pump.

Will it break after bending it? Probably.

Will I lose the pocket watch? Most likely.

Does it look kind of weird and stupid? A little bit.

But I had a lot of fun making this and I don't really give a damn! : D I stopped taking pictures after I made the first section, but you get the idea.

Re: Outride a Crisis - Honda CB450

Just went through your whole build thread and your attention to the little details is amazing. The old hand tools are pretty cool too.

Yes! Nice job on the creative watch mount, if I were you i'd be more afraid of losing it though. Looks pretty cool
