So let's recap.....

HoosierD sucks.....a lot. (and is pretty effing prolific!)

Teazer wants my carbs.

And HossierD is a bastard too......$50!! Gah!! Good on ya mate!

Funny though Teazer, the first thing I did was pop one apart and plot out my bore!
Looks like when the time comes I'll be able to go 39 maybe 39.5mm but that's a ways out.
Q for ya though.....is it kosher to chamfer the INSIDE of the bores where the slide's gonna live? I haven't seen the innards of someone else's bore job, the VM32-33 conversion went just fine with a chamfer but it's a different animal than a TM.....thoughts? Will it disrupt smooth flow at WFO?

Not if it's done right. They are basically a smooth bore carb so you have to be careful not to take too much (or any) off the floor. Those carbs have a "slide block" or whatever Mikuni calls it that make them really smooth internally. They are better bored on a mill than in a lathe unless you are very good with a 4 jaw chuck. Just bore a straight hole the right size in the right place. Make sense?

I believe that a TM38 flows about 3% better than a 38 round and makes about 5% more power with better response than a VM.

When you get closer to doing it, remind me to send you some pictures of the stock carb and a bored one for comparison.

If you have the square ended slides, you can 'heart' bore them so there is a lot more airflow at full throttle.
Basically open the top half of bore only to a 'square'
It operates completely 'stock' up to half throttle
Pull slide block first though and check just how thick it is, some have less material to play with
Has to be done in a mill, way too much work in a 4 jaw unless you have custom fittings to hold carb body
BTW, it is a bitch to get jetted right if you do it ;D

Yeah I'm a ways out on that. For now and thru the first version of this motor 38's will work great.
I have fresh 1100 cylinders and pistons from an XV1100 now and am waiting on a pair of similar vintage heads as they have a better combustion chamber (whadaya know...20 years of development....) and much better cooling fin. I'll deck'm for ~10-1, according to everything I read that should be right around 25 thou but I'll def measure first. I've got a pair of cams that'll be ground and the heads ported. Should be pretty pokey at that point and enough to push the upgraded stock chassis a wee bit too hard so....perfect! Beyond that point it'll need a significantly upgraded frame.....

Custom built to smooth out the bumps.
