Powder coat or paint a frame

Been Around the Block
Hi all

Can anyone give their thoughts on powder coating Vs painting a frame and if painting what type of paint is best?

Cheers

Powder coating is more durable and chemical resistant than paint. If you choose a powder color that you can match a paint to, and you do scratch the powder, small touch ups can be made with paint.

Powdercoat powdercoat powdercoat.

Its so much less hassle for you to just get the frame blasted and powdercoated - you dont have to waste hours and hours sanding and painting and drying. The powdercoat will be tough as nails and last much longer.

Believe me - im just about to tear one of my earlier project down again just to powdercoat the frame. I should have just done it the proper way top start with. All projects since have been powdercoated and that makes me sleep better at night.

My 2 cents: it depends.
While I won't argue that powder coat is more durable, I will say that there are things you can do with paint that you just cannot do with powder. If you want some really exotic candy color on your frame, chances are you are going to have to go with paint, same with any custom artwork you might want done on it. Everything else though...powder for sure....unless you have an aluminum frame, in which case, anodizing is an option.

What about one coat vs. two coats of powder coat on the frame? Is it worth the extra 70-80% cost?

what!? some powders require a clear... while other parts are so jacked they require a primer... but laying 2 coats of the same color say a 1 shot black... there is no point sounds like your coater is not using quality equiptment or is not propperly curing the parts... however that said... alot of candy's, flakes, chromes, translucents, etc... req a clear or top coat to protect the powder... that is a must but 80% more that is insane...

Powder is way better. I went with paint because I wanted to use filler to clean up the welds. This can be done in metal if you are a good welder, but I am not.

It is so easy to scratch the paint getting the motor in and out or in my case removing and replacing the carbs.

Very nice work! I love those brake calipers, I think I will get mine done on my t500 build. What would be a ballpark cost to do two front and one rear caliper with the lettering a different color to the body? Personally I wouldn't even think about painting my own frame - powder coat rules. My dad restores a lot of bikes old british bikes and he uses paint on the frames and it is a painfull time consuming process.

I got a quote back today for stripping and powder coating my frame and swingarm $180AUD

I think this is ok, it fits my budget so new powder will go on after I have mocked up the mods and am happy with it.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread..

I am no expert but I know powder coating is the way but I was under the impression:

1) You cannot touch up scratches etc. to a powder coat with paint?

2) You cannot powdercoat a frame without covering over the VIN number a no no for me.

3) I cannot powdercoat over a filler or a zinc primer i.e. in the case of a fuel tank that has filler.

I have an original frame that is holding up well with only a few patches needing attention, surely just wire wheeling & attending to these parts with zinc primer, paint then lacquer is enough?
