Powder coat or polish CB450 Build!

Ok the front end is finished, except for fork oil, brake pads and 60's aeroscreen. The battery/regulator/rectifier is finished and mounted, 80% of the wiring is done. Sunday will see the wiring finished. Then on to the tank and rear sets (which are complete but not mounted) and finally the seat ;D ;D ;D sigh almost there ::)
Ok i just remembered that the speedo cable is yet to be shortened, the one fitted is a temporary one to get the brackets etc fitted. I'll do the shortening next week and do a how to :D the green tape is there to remind me to finish something off ;)

Ok gents, i've just finished making my battery pack for the 450, If you remember the cells are spiral wound lead/tin, the same as in Odyssey batteries. The first photo is the prototype and was used in my work bike for a couple of months. the other photos show the final assembly ;D

I used brass wire (soldered) to connect the terminals and wrapped the whole lot in heat shrink tape (silver tape just to hold it together while i was working) made a base board and zip tied the whole lot together. Fitted the pack into a "jaycar" jiffy box, that fits the frame perfectly, finally painted the whole lot black metallic!

Oh the black stuff on the terminals etc is "liquid" electrical tape :D :D

Ok what has been happening ::) finished the wiring, fitted the coils, horn etc, finally all the cables are fitted and the choke lever fitted (from an early Kawasaki), new brake line, vacuum ports fitted to the intake manifolds, front fender started and 60% done, aero screen fitted, so the front end is 85% done. Dyna ignition finished and cover spacer made. The tanks has been started, first coat of filler is on and now the fun startes...sanding :(
All i want to do is take her out side for a wash and go for a long ride. But work take me away to Hong Kong for 4 weeks soon :-[ so work will stop for that 4 weeks and another two weeks when i get back, got to write the reports, so sad :'(

no idea how i didn't see this build already - it's coming together really very well.
i'm not usually a fan of orange, but it works for this.
admittedly i'm envious of your variety of tanks though :(
bring it down to melbourne when you're done! :)

Hey thanks ;D glad you like it, i was hoping to have it done buy Sep 1 for the book but that came and went quickly, so the VJMC meet in Melbourne was the next target but work will kill that idea :( So one day it'll be done ;D

OK what's next ;D front guard (OZ speak for fender) started with a rear guard from some British bike and cut it down to the size and shape i wanted.
1.jpg

Cut up the old guard fork brace to get the mounts, why make them if you don't have to, bent up two pieces of 12mm tube to form the guard stays, the stays will align with the holes in the guard and create the brace need for the forks.

So here is the mockup.

Hey man the more i look at the bikes being built on this site the more i want a Bobber ;D dragging the knee is one thing but cruising on a minimal single seat comfort ride, :D is getting more appealing all the time, although looking at some of the bikes here i would have my work cut out to match yours and others skills at this relaxed style.

More photos of the fork/guard brace, i'll run two strips between the tubes to attach the guard and once in and aligned I'll cut the unwanted pieces away just leaving the minimum. I've ground and smoothed the front welds (sill more to do) as this part will get chromed and i want it to look good.
The screws I'm using are from another Honda and work buy isolating the guard from the rest allowing it to flex ect.

Back from HK early and reports will be finished early next week :) so on to better things.
Just brought a new tool/toy for the shed for 400 skins and it's almost perfect, the back stop has been damage and welded and that's it, with a massive 2' cut. Just perfect for home jobs as i have access to bigger guillotines at work.
I was looking for a better made and higher quality Australian "John Heine" but this American low grade one will do i suppose ;D

I can see where that might come in handy! But lets be honest, you like collecting tools. I feel you brother.

You tell my Wife and i'll hunt you down like a sick dog and....and ;D ;D any Do the Ton builders that need their nails trimmed can come on over, share a beer and test out the new toy. Just great for fabbing up small brackets and other stuff.

We only take the best, so you'll do ;D as for the seat tank, mate you will have to wait just like me :D
