I'm busy over the next couple weekends but I'd like to stop by to see it.

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Alright fellas. Big day, lots of updates.

Tank finally here. And I guess it's time to reveal the surprise. I originally started out wanting to use a Norton Commando tank. I was well on my way down that path, but as I was visiting a friend of mine the other day, I saw a dusty old bike over in the corner that was basically a chassis with wheels and a tank. The tank immediately caught my eye, and I inquired about it and it turns out that this is what it was....It's a 1963ish Ducati F3 racer tank. It was used on the 350 single racer. Very cafe, very vintage, very awesome lines...very perfect. Well some talking and finagling around with him, and it became mine. I had to let him keep it for a few days for mockup, but it came home this morning and the work started. it of course wasn't a direct fit. I initially had to trim the front of the tank's lips so that I could place it over the frame rails, but DAMN! The coil indents even line up! So I relocated the tank rubber mounts on the frame and fabricated Some mounts onto the tank out of 16g sheet metal. I welded them up then 2 part epoxied them to the inside of the tank (it's glass, so it's interesting to work with!) Now she's sittin pretty, and seat construction can begin. I also acquired a new heavier spring for the brake side clip on. It is now finished except for finishing up the brake light switch mount. Perfecto. So that's it in a nutshell for today. I have a fender here now too along with some fender struts for the rear, but that will come tomorrow when I get it closer to completion. Hope you guys dig it, and as always, keep the comments coming. You guys keep me goin! have a good one boys and girls!

The new tank. Mounts and mockup. I absolutely love this thing!!!

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Now that's what I'm talking about! Bike is starting to take on a personality! Brother, I love it. That tank is freakin sweeeet! Really nice work. Now time for the seat. Can't wait!!!

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Thanks bro!

I really think this tank was made for this bike... It just suits it to a t!

Can't wait for the seat too...it's gonna have that old racer loot to it. Long and lean and nimble. Freaking awesome. Thanks for the props dude!

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Great find! Love the shape of the tank, really flow well
with the frame.
Keep the updates coming.

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Thanks Pete! They're coming as fast as I can go. I'm really into this project, so it keeps me moving. I appreciate the compliments man!

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Tank kicks man, great find. That thing is truly killer.

That being said, I'm gonna have to report you to CPS (the Cafe Protective Services) for criminal neglect of a certain blue tank that you have orphaned again. I know it is over 30 years old, but it depended on you for high speeds, open roads, and break neck knee-dragging in the twisties.

:p You should be ashamed!

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Hahaa!

Thanks dude. And not to worry. Because of Troybilt and his bike creeping under my skin, that tank is destined for the land of low slung bobber. That's what I'm building next, and I think I even have a line on the core bike I'm gonna use it on. It will be redeemed!!! 8)

Oh man, that is too funny!

I'm with you Kiley, I think the tank wants to be on a bob ;D

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

I'm with you on that. It just looks bobberish with it's nice leather strip up the middle of the tank. Something about it screams "down and dirty"! And it will go there. I just have to finish one bike at a time. Oh and BTW, I'm stealing that cork gasket tirck for my points cover Troy. That's an excellent idea.

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

That tank looks sweet! Much like the one I had on my last cafe. What did you use to epoxy the mounts to the tank? Also does this mean the cb200 tank is up for grabs?? If so let me know, I want dibs! Bike is looking killer and with that fairing you posted earlier it will really come together. -MBS

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Tank looks great!!!! I've been reading the posts but pics don't show up on my blackberry, looks even better than I pictured in my head!!!

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Wow-wow-wee-wow! Your bike is going to be amazing! Heck, it's amazing already. Keep it up. I can't wait to see the seat either. Lol I sound like a broken record!

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Hey MBS, the epoxy was the Loctite 2 part. Comes in two bottles. Got it a Lowes. I sanded the inside down with 40 grit to give it a rough texture. Then I wiped it down with acetone and then applied. It is tough! I'm gonna be keeping the 200 tank for now. I want to see how it fits my next project, but if I change my mind I'll let you know. Thanks for the compliments.

Thanks as always Marc.

Today I got a lot more done. Fender is mocked up. I have to build a couple of mounts for it. The fender strut that I have ended up being too short, so I'm gonna have to one off a new one. You can see what it looks like though from the pics. Most of the day was spent fabricating a seat. I built a mold out of pizza boxes and then taped over the whole thing with aluminum plumbers tape. Then I coated the whole mold with Johnson's wax. Same process I used for my last seat. I incorporated a spot on the back to mount my new tail light. Glass went flying, and she's curing as we speak. Tomorrow I will trim the seat down and build the brackets to mount it to the frame. I also plan to finish the rear fender mounts. I may put the clip ons on to see how the fairing looks with them. I'm moving on along, and with any luck this bike will be finished this year!!! Let me know what you guys think!

have a good one!

Seat stuff:

The mold.

The glassin'!

The fender. I think it looks sick. It will be mounted low to the tire. Remember this will be going over a 130 rear tire, so it will fill the fender up much more than the 110 that is on the bike now.

I am looking for a 2 or 3 inch round light for the tail light to mount here. I am also thinking about upholstering the seat in brown leather. I would love to find brown grips to match. If you guys know where I can find any of this stuff let me know! I'll be back tomorrow!

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

hey goodfornothing, I know that you can even make a broken record sound cool, so that is a good thing! You'll just have to slow it down and add some delay! I appreciate it bro.

These grips are drop dead gorgeous.

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Oh hell yes. That's what I'm talking about. I think I'll have to have those. Thank you!

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Theres a real life look.

'Photo is from a build on here

Try some ostrich leather for the saddle? I think itd be bang on with the grips

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Oh even better. man you DTT guys have good taste!

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Daaaaaamn. Looking sick Kiley! Love the seat and fender. Nice work man. I'm glad I stayed up tonight to get the update. Tank, seat and fender are right on the money! Ok brother, it keeps getting better. ? is can you keep it up? I'm impressed so far!

Almost forgot, since the fender will be mounted on the swingarm, don't forget about the chain adjusters and where that tire will end up. I know you're on it already but thought I should mention it ;)
