Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Yeah, I did think about that. I actually have to do a little work on the rear wheel "forks" they are too long and need trimmed down. I figure I'll mount the fender to where the tire would be if it were as close to the bike as it could be...i.e. as far into the swingarm as possible. You're only talking maybe an inch total of play so it should still look cool. Thanks for reminding me of that Troy, that's something I think I'll tackle tomorrow too. And I hope I can keep it up! It's keeping me occupied, and when I'm occupied I'm attentive to things and tend to keep things going. I hope that you guys keep posting, it really does keep me going on this project. Makes me want to get on here and see what my DTT homies will have to say!

Thanks for the compliments brother.

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Yeah, I have to say that I'm won over now. I had my doubts with the mono shock. I think it just offended my purist side. but this thing is going to look great and will truly be one of a kind. I will say though that $40 for grips is crazy! I am in the wrong line of work!!

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Yeah that is a little steep. But I'm glad you're liking it. After building a classic bike on the last go around, I wanted a project that would push my boundaries in skill. I like to continue to innovate so I don't get bored. It's been fun so far, and I can't wait to keep going. Thanks Diesel!

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Alright fellas!

More done today. I got the seat trimmed down and of of the mold. I reinforced it from the bottom today with some of the "fiber" type glass in the seating area. I'm waiting for it to cure now so I can start the body working process. I think it turned out well, and I talked to my buddy Neal today and he offered to do it in CF for me once the final piece is finished. He has a nice vacuum mold machine and I think that would be TITS! So that's the plan!

I also finished fabricating the rear fender mounts today. I got a 79 goldwing front fender brace set off of EBAY thinking that it would fit the new fender. The new one is too wide...go figure. They did come in handy though. They were sold as a pair, so I cut them down and re-welded them to make my new custom braces. turned out great. The fender is strong and solid. I left enough room for the new meat out back as well.

The next thing I tackled was to fabricate the rear electronics tray. I wanted it to be removable so that I could take it out if need be. I build 4 tiny little brackets and drilled them out. Then after trimming and trimming and trimming I finally got the tray to seat nicely down between the frame. I welded in a new brace between the rear frame rails in order to strengthen the seating area and to provide a place to mount the tray. Finished it off with some stainless screws. Very nice. I plan on welding the nuts for the tray to the bottom of the tiny brackets in order to make it easier to remove. No wrench needed.

The tank mounts work very well BTW.

All in all it was a productive day. Tomorrow will be seat fab time, and body work takes me forever because I am picky!!!! At the end of the day I should have a nice seat done though.

Let me know what you guys think so far!

It is crooked here. Fixed now. I had to cut about 1/2" out of that left brace to fit it up correctly.

Good day of progress. More tomorrow! Hope you guys like it!

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Dude you are knocking this thing out! Good progress. However, I was really anticipating a shot with a fairing?? LOL. Maybe even a rider profile shot with the new fender and such. Guess we'll have to wait another day. This is really giving me the itch to do another project this winter. It's a little late in the year to sell my bike and get anything out of it. Besides I was hoping to ride it for atleast half a summer before I started another. Come to think of it even if I had the funds I won't have the time this winter :(
Anyway, keep the progress going! Looking good

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

ya, dont even think of selling the bobber before getting a good season out of it. That would be a shame.

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

You can't sell you're bobber, Troy! Unless it was to me of course :):):):).

Kanticoy, your fab work is just awesome. The next build I do, I want to incorporate some welding and what not. My current build is intended to be a better looking bike than it originally was to get me here and there, so nothing fancy done.

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Hey guys, I appreciate the compliments.

Troy, I totally understand that itch. My advice is to keep what you've got till you get something else, or you're stuck without a bike. Been there, it sucks! But dude, you have to do another build when time and funds allow....you're one of those guys that one-ups himself every time you do something new, so keep on pushing yourself brother!

And goodfornothing, I totally get what you're saying. The bike you are building really is cool though. I went through the same thing that you did. Your first builds are very mild and get progressively custom. It's the learning process. You get better and better I think. Just the way it goes. I'm glad you guys are like me. I enjoy the building as much as I do the finished product. It just keeps me sane in this hectic world. Gotta have my drug, and my drug is working with my hands!

Fellas, I appreciate the props. I really do.

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Oh yeah, and Troy, I'll get you some pics. I have been having a hard time figuring out how to attach the fairing without the permanent mounts...I'll see what I can do though. The profile shots...consider that done man. I like those anyway, they give me a perspective of what I'm doing. They're kind of my homework....I get home and study shots of the bike to get an idea of where to go.

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Hey Kiley, right now you guys are the drug for my addiction. All these cool builds going on....Oh man, my hands are starting to shake. I need some progress updates quick. I think I'm having withdrawal....Someone,... anyone,... quick. I need an update!!
Hahahaha.
Hey don't worry fellas. I plan to get a bunch more riding before I sell this one. ;D I rode it almost an hour each way to the photo shoot and I had a blast. I love how it feels. I couldn't have done that on the cafe without stopping at least once and giving my wrists a rest. I have carpel tunnel and the way the cafe was set up was pretty hard on me. Anyhow, I have a few small changes planned for this winter. That should keep me busy. Hopefully it will satisfy my addiction ;D
I think a bunch of us on here are grease monkeys anyway and we enjoy wrenching as much as riding. It's so addictive to get your hands dirty! Anyway, I couldn't agree more about each build getting a little better. I think its somethng that lives inside us.

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Okay guys, an update of sorts.

Didn't get as much done today as I wanted to, I didn't get out of class today until 5:15. Came home and went to work! Haha, I truly live for this shit!

So yesterday I decided to glass over the new mounts on my tank just to give them strength. I didn't want to rely only on the epoxy to keep my gas on my bike! I put 3 layers of glass over the mounts after sanding with 80 grit and voila! She's super rigid now. I slapped a coat of appliance epoxy over the finished product, and now this is officially a cb360 tank! Couldn't be happier!

I snapped a few pics of the fixed, non crooked rear fender just tp prove how much better it looks. That last pic was driving me crazy! It's much better now.

I also cut down the tank rubbers so the fit isn't so tight there. Still solid as a rock, just not so cramped that you need grease to lube the mounts up to fit!

Started on the seat body work today. I hate body work. I don't know why, it just annoys the crap out of me. I am so freakin picky with this stuff it just makes me go nuts! But another hour or so of work and she'll be ready to paint. I think I may have decided on a color scheme, but I'm gonna run it by you guys and you let me know what you think. I want to do the body work in an early honda green. Something like this:

HondaL.jpg

I'd love to get a paint code on that btw if anyone knows it. Otherwise I'm just gonna have to dig through swatches. I'm thinking of doing a black stripe down the middle with cream or white pinstripes on the outside of that. Something custom thrown in, I just don't know what yet....

I think it sounds cool in my head. Just tell me what ya think, I'd love some feedback

Anyway, here's some progress pics for your viewing pleasure. Remember, body work is only about 70% done here.

Troy, there's your drugs for the night....I have to be careful with you, I don't want you to end up on the street begging for change!

Hope you guys like it, and I can't wait for your feedback!

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

aaah. I feel better! Real nice work Kiley. Tank mounts look awesome. Figure the epoxy might have been enough, but now there is no question. Looks nice and strong. The seat looks good and beefy too. And now it is getting straight. Hang in there, you know it will pay off.
Fender looks much better. Everything is comming along real nice! Just like the doctor ordered!

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

yeah ,man, the seat is nice and thick, especially in the butt area. It's 6 layers there...3 of fiber cloth, and three of mat. Ahould be groovy. Yeah, I'm sure the epoxy was fine, but I kept having visions of that thing breaking loose going down the road....yikes! And i'm used to body work, it's just not very fun to me for some reason. I've done at least 10 entire cars and this will be my 7th seat I've done, it's just annoying! Oh and BTW, as soon as it quits raining cats and dogs here I'll get those pics of the profile for you. I need some new ones anyway!

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

I think you made the right decision in reinforcing the mounts. I dont really know anything about glass and resin but I had the same visions when I saw your first solution.

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Yeah boom, the fiberglass integrates everything into the tank...it's like it's one piece now. I sanded it down so the glass had grip to the tank, and then pasted over it. It dries very hard and makes it seem super durable. I trust it completely now. And I had a new revelation about the paint....how about white skins with the Honda green stripe trimmed in black pin stripes? I think that's the one. It just feels right.

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Its funny, as much as I'm not a fan of white I was actually thinking white for some reason. guess its that white tank. It looks so right on there. Still, I'd almost need to see it photo shopped. I'd even go as far as saying off white/ (sometimes called bisque) with the same scheme. Hell maybe even off white/bisque rims with black spokes to along with it. Just a thought

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Yeah, that would be cool too! If I didn't have so much work tied up in the black powdered rims I have I would do that, so I'm kind of working around that. And the tank is for sure what's making me think white....it looks very cool on there to me...And I was kind of thinking an off white too....something subtle, but not hospital white...kind of an antique look.

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

I just sent a pm but it went straight to a white screen. Let me know if you get it. Yeah man, I think the antique white would look really good with the brown grips and seat. JRk sent me a photo a while back of one of his friends HD done in bisque. It looked flippin fantastic! Wish I could find that photo again. The green with it would anchor it all. I'm digging it alot!

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Yeah me too.. I think that's the ticket...now you've got me thinking a tan stripe on the bisque/antique white skins...rear fender to match....all with the brown leather seat and grips....Now that's sexy 70s vintage!!! I think it would kick with the black wheels and frame too...

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

;D I think you're on to something. Maybe outline the tan stripe in black to help pull in the wheels and such. Yeah bro, I really think vintage meets performance is the right thought process.
