Project " Twisted Metal " two stroke

I guess I have to quit making excuses for my flux core welder and get on with it then.lol. What gauge or thickness steel are you using?

Love this. I am a huge RD fan.

I have a landspeed RD400 that holds the record at El Mirage. I have always planned on running it at the salt, but figured the longer distance would overheat the air cooled engine. A Banshee engine is what I was going to put in, so I will be watching you closely mister.

Alpinaclone,

The innershield will do it but its not as clean as gas shielded as you know and even though I am welding mine inside and out I am sure I will have to coat the tank. I am working with 16 ga, a little heavy but easier to weld than 24, less holes with innershield...

400 Landspeed sounds awesome and congrats on the record.... This bike I had planned on taking to the flats but it is turning more into a art deco sportbike. I am now planning on using it as a streetbike and test & tuning platform for the drivetrain . I will be pulling another frame off the ceiling this summer for the actul landspeed bike after this one teaches me some more.... I would love to see pics of the RD400, will you post some..........Cafe Freak

I try to avoid swearing on this forum as it could be a mixed bag of individuals floating around...but that bike is ILL AS FUCK!!!!

Love the lines, love the pipes, love the wing-a-ding-ding smokers....

Thanks for the info man. I am doing up 20ga. And it is a challenge.

As far as the monoshock is concerned, if you are doing it as a design exercise, I would go with the under slung shock. For all other aspects I would go with the triangulated monoshock setup. It should be lighter, it looks cool and it is kind of a trademark of old Yamahas. Plus I wouldn't want my shock sandwiched between 2 hot expansion chambers.

Glad you like it, thanks for the support. Sorry I made you curse online...........LOL

Alpinaclone

20ga should be a happy medium, I want to see some pics when you are done , post them here if you want Im cool with that....As far as the shock I am still undecided, at this point I could go either way, I too love the traditional look but I have two racers modded that way already so IM looking for somthing different. Since I dont have to mod the swingarm I dont mind trying it but your correct the top mount will be lighter but the lower mounted system will lower the center of gravity.....As for the heat issue the lower belly pan will scoop and funnel air around the the chambers and shock,,,, With the shock below it also opens up the area where the aircleaners will go and allow for the upper scoops and housing to feed fresh cool air to them..........Cafe Freak

I hate to disrupt your thread, but you asked. ;D

I didn't set the record. It was set by the guy who originally built it, Ed Erlenbach. Life keeps getting in the way of me getting out to the salt, and also a set of coils. If you want to talk more about the landspeed thing you can email me mark@atkinsonperformance.com

I dont mind, no disruption here especially for landspeed RD400 pics. Very cool Thanks........Iwill be contacting you soon...Cafe Freak

Cool Stuff Freak! I have been away and a ton has been posted here while I was gone! Not sure if anyone answered you though! I think the Buell shock is a pull type, but I could be wrong, you may want to look into it more! I just rememered from looking at a few when I was interested in having one. I have not looked at them in a while now.

A little progress, had to countour the head pipes to clear future shock linkage. Stripped the red off the wheels and mounted some mock up tires......90/90/18 front and 120/80/18 rear....Also lowered it a little and polished the tank some and it looks like stainless....HMMMMMM I just may pick up some stainless fron the scrap yard and build another tank and tail, I REALLY like the raw look so why not run with it.......Cafe Freak

This thing just gets more wild everytime I check in... There are so many details and engineering tricks that just blow me away. Really great work Cafefreak. I cant wait to see this bike wrapped up.

Thanks Von, it is still a work in progress and bound to change still, and as you can see on Mini Freaks speedster my son keeps me busy so ut will be a while before it is finished.... I cant wait to see it finished also....Cafe Freak

Time for a little update....Just got back on this and started redoing the tank and tail out of stainless from the scrap yard...I also picked up another bike and it will be my bonneville bike instead so its time to get a little more exotic with Twisted Metal.... First pic is the new bike , 86 canadian RZ350 63hp stock and since the Twisted Metal bike uses same bottom end as the RZ it will be the street dyno and test bed for the landspeed motors, Next are this weekends build pics, tell me what you think.......Cafe Freak
