Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

More mysterious boxes appeared at my house today. ;) My swing arm kit and the front and rear tubes have arrived.

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

I started working on my skid plate today. I still have some trimming and fitting to do, but at least I started it. This stuff was hard to bend. It will definitely be tough enough. I will be putting some speed holes in it once its finished.

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

WTF! That's a skid plate after my own heart ........... what gauge ally did you use and how did you bend it?

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

Thanks Justin....and Erskine It is .250 plate and I used my press and to bend it. It took awhile but it worked. So I guess you guys like it? I was worried it was too wide. I was debating cutting it down. What do you think?

Re: Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

Looks bas ass! keep it this way! Add some holes and give a thourough test ;)

Re: Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

I don't think it needs cutting down, It'll do what it says on the tin and protect your crank cases from some hardcore abuse. Maybe a smattering of lightening holes but not swiss cheese ;)

Re: Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

Any thoughts on a hole pattern?

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

Mate I like it! I still have plenty of 2.5mm alu. here that I was going to use for one on mine but never got around to it... still might do it yet. And yeah, that thickness sure is hard to bend! I used it for my fork brace/guard mount and it seems to be holding up well so far, haven't noticed any weird front end issues.

I'd just make sure there's enough holes to get enough air flow to the cases and that you have a hole big enough for the oil drain plug that you don't need to take the plate off for oil changes.

What's the plan for attaching it?

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

Yeah it is tough stuff. I actually set it on the curb and drove my truck up it to start the bend then I used my press to get the exact shape I wanted. I will be putting a bunch of holes in it to lighten it up and improve airflow. I would like to be able to leave it on to change oil but my filter is right behind the front tire so It will have to come off for oil changes. I almost finished my mounts today. I will show you once its done. I still need to bend it a little more to get it to sit perfectly flat on the frame.

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

Cool, keen to see the mounting! That's one reason I never even started mine... just couldn't figure how to mount it.

And I hear ya' on the oil filter, just realised I'd have the same problem as mine is in the same spot...

Although... could you make the section in front of the filter removable? Probably easier just to make the mounts so you can take the whole plate off...

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

Skid plate done. I just welded threaded mounts to the frame and used stainless counter sunk screws.

Re: Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

Thanks I guess I really didnt get a good shot of the hole patters but I went (big ----> little) on an angle. The big hole in the center is for the oil filter bolt.

Nice hole pattern.

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

Excellent! I like it, that turned out real well! And that mounting idea should do the job nicely, much neater than anything I was thinking...

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

Thanks Pete, when I tear it down for paint I will get some better pics for the plate mounts.
